The authors compared the ultrastructure of lamellar complexes in the penis skin of the green monkey and in the woman's clitoris skin. In the green monkey the lamellar complexes consist of a maximum of 5 lamellae of Schwann cells, their greatest width is about 4.5 microm. In 1997, a new clinic was established at the Central Middlesex Hospital to serve the needs of a mainly Somali population who had suffered genital mutilation in childhood. Between June 1997 and January 2005, 4,125 clinic attendances were recorded. A total of 215 reversals of circumcision were carried out (FGM 3), all on a day-care basis. Two related female Norwegian Elkhounds were evaluated at 6 and 8 months of age for enlarged clitori. Both had a 78 XX karyotype. Histology of their internal reproductive tracts demonstrated 1 to be an XX true hermaphrodite with bilateral ovotestes and the other to be an XX male with bilateral aspermatogenic testes. Five incontinent girls between 4 and 18 years old were made continent by constructing in each case a long extension of the urethra up to the clitoris. Previous operations at the proximal end of the urethra, to narrow the bladder neck, had not achieved continence. Lengthening the urethra was accomplished by tubularizing the anterior vaginal wall and covering that with a generous pedicle flap from the perineum.
