Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: crossroads between neurology, psychiatry and neuroscience.

Non-motor symptoms contribute significantly to Parkinson's disease (PD) related disability. Impulse control disorders (ICDs) have been recently added to the behavioural spectrum of PD-related non-motor symptoms. Such behaviours are characterized by an inappropriate drive to conduct repetitive behaviours that are usually socially inadequate or result in harmful consequences. Parkinson disease impulse control disorders (PD-ICDs) have raised significant interest in the scientific and medical community, not only because of their incapacitating nature, but also because they may represent a valid mo

Age differences in affective decision making as indexed by performance on the Iowa Gambling Task.

Contemporary perspectives on age differences in risk taking, informed by advances in developmental neuroscience, have emphasized the need to examine the ways in which emotional and cognitive factors interact to influence decision making. In the present study, a diverse sample of 901 individuals between the ages of 10 and 30 were administered a modified version of the Iowa Gambling Task, which is designed to measure affective decision making. Results indicate that approach behaviors (operationalized as the tendency to play increasingly from the advantageous decks over the course of the task) di

Intrusive images in psychological disorders: characteristics, neural mechanisms, and treatment implications.

Involuntary images and visual memories are prominent in many types of psychopathology. Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder, other anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, and psychosis frequently report repeated visual intrusions corresponding to a small number of real or imaginary events, usually extremely vivid, detailed, and with highly distressing content. Both memory and imagery appear to rely on common networks involving medial prefrontal regions, posterior regions in the medial and lateral parietal cortices, the lateral temporal cortex, and the medial temporal lobe. Embodied consciousness: Reflections on anatomy, spirituality, and healing.

The human body is commonly approached through the language of anatomy, yet anatomy alone may not fully capture the lived experience of being embodied. This reflection explores the relationship between anatomical structure, embodied consciousness, spirituality, and healing through an osteopathic perspective. Drawing on osteopathic philosophy, phenomenology, fascial science, interoception, and embodied cognition, it considers the body not merely as an anatomical object but as a medium through which awareness and experience are expressed. Particular attention is given to fascial continuity, palpa

The Schematic Brain: The Neurophysiology of Behavioral Schemas.

How does prior experience shape the way we interpret new situations, learn faster, and adapt when the world changes? These capacities depend on schemas: structured representations of relational knowledge that the brain builds through experience and reuses flexibly across contexts. Although schemas have long been central to theories of memory and cognition, their neural implementation is only now becoming accessible through advances in large-scale neural recordings, population-level analysis methods, and precise causal circuit tools. Here we review the emerging systems neuroscience of schemas,

Attendance and Academic Performance in Neurophysiology: Engaging Dental Students Through Active Learning.

Engaging students in foundational neuroscience courses such as neurophysiology remains a challenge in dental education. Class attendance is often assumed to be associated with academic performance, yet evidence in basic science disciplines is inconsistent. This study analyzed the correlation between class attendance and academic performance among undergraduate dental students enrolled in a neurophysiology course. Institutional academic data from 185 students across four consecutive semesters (2023-2024) were retrospectively analyzed. The course included clinically oriented learning activities,

Evidence of a predictive coding hierarchy in the human brain listening to speech.

Considerable progress has recently been made in natural language processing: deep learning algorithms are increasingly able to generate, summarize, translate and classify texts. Yet, these language models still fail to match the language abilities of humans. Predictive coding theory offers a tentative explanation to this discrepancy: while language models are optimized to predict nearby words, the human brain would continuously predict a hierarchy of representations that spans multiple timescales. To test this hypothesis, we analysed the functional magnetic resonance imaging brain signals of 3

[Gender morphology of Broca's motor speech area].

OBJECTIVE: To study the general patterns and differences in the macroscopic structure of Broca's motor speech area in the left and right hemispheres of male and female brains. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on MRI images of the brains of 9 men and 9 women (36 hemispheres in total). All the people were between the ages of 20 and 30, without any mental or neurological disorders. The localization and structure of the main sulci and gyri of Broca's area, namely the pars triangularis and pars opercularis, were studied. In addition, the topography of the main sulci in Broca's motor s

A whole new world: embracing the systems-level to understand the indirect impact of pathology in neurodegenerative disorders.

The direct link between neuropathology and the symptoms that emerge from damage to the brain is often difficult to discern. In this perspective, we argue that a satisfying account of neurodegenerative symptoms most naturally emerges from the consideration of the brain from the systems-level. Specifically, we will highlight the role of the neuromodulatory arousal system, which is uniquely positioned to coordinate the brain's ability to flexibly integrate the otherwise segregated structures required to support higher cognitive functions. Importantly, the neuromodulatory arousal system is highly

A multi-task learning approach for the extraction of single-trial evoked potentials.

Evoked potentials (EPs) are of great interest in neuroscience, but their measurement is difficult as they are embedded in background spontaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) activity which has a much larger amplitude. The widely used averaging technique requires the delivery of a large number of identical stimuli and yields only an "average" EP which does not allow the investigation of the possible variability of single-trial EPs. In the present paper, we propose the use of a multi-task learning method (MTL) for the simultaneous extraction of both the average and the N single-trial EPs from N

From stigma to support: the mediating role of sympathy between nurses' perceived stigma and helping behavior tendency for alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: The detrimental effect of stigma on healthcare for individuals with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) is well-established, often resulting in social distance and diminished helping behavior tendencies. However, contemporary neuroscience reconceptualizes addiction as a brain disease, potentially altering emotional responses to stigma. This study examines a seemingly paradoxical possibility: that under specific conditions, perceived stigma is primarily associated with sympathy (rather than anger or fear), which in turn is linked to helping behavior tendencies among nurses. METHODS: A cro

Narcissistic personality traits and prefrontal brain structure.

Narcissistic traits have been linked to structural and functional brain networks, including the insular cortex, however, with inconsistent findings. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that subclinical narcissism is associated with variations in regional brain volumes in insular and prefrontal areas. We studied 103 clinically healthy subjects, who were assessed for narcissistic traits using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI, 40-item version) and received high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-based morphometry was used to analyse MRI scans and multiple regre

Effect of False Memories on Episodic and Semantic Memory and Amnesia in Patients with Hippocampal Lesions.

OBJECTIVES: The hippocampus plays a crucial role in the formation of episodic memory, spatial navigation, and emotional regulation. Damage to hippocampus may lead to cognitive and emotional deficits, particularly episodic and semantic memory impairments. Previous researches have done extensive research on hippocampal dysfunction, but the role of multimodal false memory induction in individuals with acute hippocampal lesions is yet to be explored. This study explored the effects of sequential (first and second order) false memory induction (visual, auditory, and combined modalities) on episodic

The Insight Trap: Recursive Affective-Symbolic Loops and the Architecture of Chronicity.

RATIONALE: Chronic psychological suffering may persist despite adequate diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and preserved cognitive insight. In clinical practice, this persistence is often interpreted as treatment resistance, symptom severity or insufficient adherence. However, such explanations may fail to capture the structural organization through which suffering becomes stabilized over time. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This theoretical article proposes an alternative conceptualization of psychopathological chronicity as a structural mode of organization sustained by recursive affective-symbolic

The prefrontal cortex: from monkey to man.

The prefrontal cortex is so important to human beings that, if deprived of it, our behaviour is reduced to action-reactions and automatisms, with no ability to make deliberate decisions. Why does the prefrontal cortex hold such importance in humans? In answer, this review draws on the proximity between humans and other primates, which enables us, through comparative anatomical-functional analysis, to understand the cognitive functions we have in common and specify those that distinguish humans from their closest cousins. First, a focus on the lateral region of the prefrontal cortex illustrates

From animal behavior to human perioperative neurocognitive disorders: translational boundaries of the gut-brain axis.

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND), including postoperative delirium (POD), delayed neurocognitive recovery (DNR), and postoperative neurocognitive disorder, are common after surgery in older adults, and the gut-brain axis has been proposed as a contributing pathway. Most mechanistic support rests on rodent behavioral assays, yet these endpoints and human clinical diagnoses are routinely treated as interchangeable. This critical narrative review examines that translational boundary. PND is used here as a clinically consequential test case for a broader behavioral-neuroscience problem

A Biomarker Out of Context: Understanding High p-tau217 in the Developing Brain.

Phosphorylated tau at threonine 217 (p-tau217) is generally considered a very specific biomarker of Alzheimer's disease and tau-mediated neurodegeneration in adult patients, where its increase is strongly associated with amyloid, pathology, synaptic dysfunction, and progressive cognitive decline. However, surprisingly, some data report extremely elevated levels of p-tau217 in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid of healthy neonates and infants, i.e., without the presence of neurodegeneration, cognitive impairment, or structural brain damage. The latter paradoxical situation raises a fundamental ques

Family engagement on neuroscience units with Post-covid visiting policies: A retrospective chart review.

BackgroundFamily engagement is crucial for achieving successful outcomes for both patients and hospitals. It supports safe transitions between care settings, providers, and ultimately, as illness progresses. However, in the hospital setting, family engagement is poorly operationalized. While the existing literature acknowledges its benefits, it does not adequately define the specific domains of family engagement, the roles families play during inpatient care, or whether these factors differ across patient populations.AimsThis research aims to describe family engagement in the hospital setting
