In the last 10 years HIV-1/human T-cell leukemia virus (HIV-1/HTLV) coinfection has emerged as a worldwide health problem. The numbers of HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfections in South America and Africa are increasing, as well as HIV-1/HTLV-2 coinfections in the USA and Europe. Coinfections by either HTLV-1 or HTLV-2 and HIV-1 frequently occur in persons with a history of injection drug use. Since HTLV-1 preferentially infects CD4+ T-cells and HTLV-2 has a tropism for CD8+ T-cells, the influence of coinfection on HIV-1 disease progression may be different. The effect of HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfection on HIV-I …

The morbidity, mortality, and social disruption caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic continue to weigh disproportionate … nfectious Diseases. Special attention is given to evidence relevant to the hypothesis that helminth coinfection plays a particularly important role in accelerating the pace of HIV pathogenesis in the tropics.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) share similar transmission routes, but concurrent acute HCV and HBV infection was rarely reported. Little is known about viral interaction and hepatic biochemical features of acute HBV and HCV coinfection. We report an intravenous drug abuser with simultaneous acute HBV and HCV infections presenting as biphasic elevation of both alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and total bilirubin levels. HCV infection is the major cause of continuing hepatitis after termination of HBsAg antigenemia.

Multiple-species parasitic infections are pervasive in the developing world, yet resources for their control are scarce. We present an integrated approach for risk profiling and spatial prediction of coinfection with Schistosoma mansoni and hookworm for western Côte d'Ivoire. Our approach combines demographic, environmental, and socioeconomic data; incorporates them into a geographic information system; and employs spatial statistics. Demographic and socioeconomic data were obtained from education registries and from a questionnaire administered to schoolchildren. Environmental data were deriv…

OBJECTIVE: To assess the spatial pattern of tuberculosis incidence in relation to the AIDS epidemic, with the aim of investigating the geographical influence on causality.
METHODS: All AIDS cases from State of São Paulo, notified to the Brazilian Ministry of Health between 1991 and 2001, were included. The cases were stratified by municipality, by administrative health regions, AIDS transmission categories, gender and years since diagnosis. A Gaussian geostatistical model was used to construct a thematic risk map, utilizing the tuberculosis incidence among AIDS cases as the response variable.

Castleman's disease is a rare disorder characterized by two distinct entities with similar histology but different time course and therapeutic response. Multicentric plasma cell variant is highly associated with infection by human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), but the pathogenesis of the hyaline vascular variant is currently unknown. We report a pregnant patient who develops a localized axillary hyaline-type Castleman's disease in which HHV-8 DNA sequences were detected in the lymph node lesions by nested PCR. In addition, the PCR multiplex also showed positivity for EBV. Immunohistochemical studies

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease is common in postrenal transplant recipients, and may predispose the patients to secondary bacterial or fungal infections. However, simultaneous coinfection is rare and often makes diagnosis difficult. We report a case of CMV pneumonitis in a renal transplant recipient presenting with elevated CMV pp65 antigen level and abnormal chest radiograph. Despite potent and broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy, his condition deteriorated rapidly - he soon went into respiratory failure, septic shock and died several days later. Transbronchial biopsy and bronchoalveolar lava…

Protection against L. major is dependent on the stimulation of an anti-leishmanial T helper1 (Th1) response and the production of Interferon (IFN)-y. BALB/c mice develop a Th2 response and fatal infection with Leishmania major. Strategies that boost IL-12 production have shown to be protective. The innate response to Listeria monocytogenes is associated with IL-12 production. The co-infection of BALB/c mice with L. monocytogenes attenuates the course of L. major infection. Lesion sizes were smaller, and co-infected mice out-survived controls injected with L. major alone. The parasite load was

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Studies on Lyme borreliosis and other tick-borne zoonoses in the Austrian and Slovakian borderland, a region endemic for tularemia, revealed a relatively high prevalence of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. and Francisella tularensis in small terrestrial mammals, as well as in the ticks, during a one-year survey. The occurrence of coinfection with the agents of Lyme borreliosis and tularemia was assessed in different species of rodents.
METHODS: Organs of small mammals, live-trapped mostly in six-week intervals from May 1994 to April 1995, were cultured on app…

Both dogs and humans can be coinfected with various Ehrlichia, Bartonella, Rickettsia, and Babesia species. We investigated a kennel of sick Walker Hounds and their owners in southeastern North Carolina for evidence of tick-borne infections and associated risk factors. A high degree of coinfection was documented in the dog population. Of the 27 dogs, 26 were seroreactive to an Ehrlichia sp., 16 to Babesia canis, and 25 to Bartonella vinsonii, and 22 seroconverted to Rickettsia rickettsii antigens. According to PCR results, 15 dogs were infected with Ehrlichia canis, 9 with Ehrlichia chaffeensi…

Bacterial coinfection following a respiratory viral infection is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality during viral pandemics. However, the specific interaction between S. pneumoniae and SARS-CoV-2 remains scattered and poorly understood. In this narrative review, current evidence regarding the pathogenesis, synergistic effects, and clinical impact of this coinfection was collected and reviewed. Peer-reviewed literature published between January 2020 and January 2026 was retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, and the evidence is presented separately according to its sour…

Liver transplantation for patients with hemophilia and HIV/HCV coinfection presents unique challenges due to the complexity of perioperative management, including coagulation disorders, drug interactions, and potential complications such as pulmonary hypertension. We report a successful case of brain-dead donor liver transplantation in a patient with hemophilia B and HIV/HCV coinfection, complicated by pulmonary hypertension. The patient, a man in his 50s, acquired multidrug-resistant HIV and HCV in childhood from contaminated blood products. Despite successful HCV eradication, liver function …

Odontogenic brain abscesses are uncommon. Eggerthella lenta and Bilophila wadsworthia are anaerobes that are normal components of the human intestinal microbiota. Both can also be found in the oral cavity. We report the case of an 81-year-old man with a brain abscess caused by coinfection of E. lenta and B. wadsworthia associated with periodontitis. The patient underwent a right frontal craniotomy with excision of the abscess. Ceftriaxone and metronidazole were then started, along with levetiracetam. Ceftriaxone and metronidazole were maintained for four weeks, and the antibiotic treatment was…

Interactions between co-occurring pathogens can have complex and significant impacts on host survival, fitness, and population dynamics. While common in wildlife, coinfections are often overlooked, and research may create biased management perspectives when individual pathogens are assessed in isolation. Recent work has found that wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are affected by various pathogens, but it is unknown how infections and coinfections are spatially structured or interact with each other. Here, we determined the associations and risk factors of infection by lymphoproliferative dis…

Coinfections involving helminths and protozoan parasites are frequent in endemic regions and can influence host immunity and disease outcomes. Although Schistosoma mansoni is known to modulate immune responses in several infectious and inflammatory diseases, its impact on Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis infection remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated how the timing of S. mansoni infection affects the progression of L. amazonensis disease in BALB/c mice. Two experimental settings were established: an early coinfection, in which S. mansoni infection occurred 15 days after L. amazo…

This study characterized the biology of Bovine Papillomavirus (BPV) in cattle from Pernambuco, Brazil, comparing viral load and gene express … r genetic diversity (Shannon index H = 1.25 vs. 0.78 in blood) and a 4.3-fold higher probability of coinfection by multiple viral types (OR = 4.3; 95% CI 1.2-15.8), with clonal predominance of BPV-2 (84.6% of samples). The absence of negative correlations suggests viral coexistence without mutual inhibition. It is concluded that papillomas are the primary sit …

BACKGROUND: The global incidence of syphilis has been rising, and atypical clinical presentations are increasingly recognized. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-induced immune changes can alter syphilis progression and complicate diagnosis. Otosyphilis is a rare but potentially reversible cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). This study investigates otologic involvement in patients co-infected with syphilis and HIV.
METHODS: Medical records of patients diagnosed with both syphilis and HIV infection at Etlik City Hospital between January 2023 and June 2025 were retrospectively reviewed.
