Prognostic value of MDCT in malignant large-bowel obstructions.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to correlate multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) findings and postoperative prognosis in malignant large-bowel obstructions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients affected by malignant colonic obstruction underwent MDCT examination and were analysed for obstruction site, colon-wall morphology, intestinal content alterations and transverse diameter of ascending colon. RESULTS: Obstruction site was recognised in all cases (5/27 ascending colon; 1/27 transverse colon; 11/27 descending colon; 10/27 sigma-rectum). Intestinal content consisted of mainly ai

Esophageal reconstruction for esophageal strictures or resection after corrosive injury.

A total of 75 esophageal reconstructions were performed for caustic esophageal strictures (65 patients) or postcaustic resection (10 patients) at Naval General Hospital and National Cheng-Kung University Hospital from September 1976 to April 1991. Reconstructive procedures included bypass in 61 patients, replacement of the esophagus through the substernal route in 10, and replacement of the esophagus through the posterior mediastinum in 4. Esophageal substitutes used for reconstruction were a long segment of the ileum and the ascending colon in 42 patients; a short segment of the ileum and the

Colon epithelium. I. Light microscopic, histochemical, and ultrastructural features of normal colon epithelium of male Fischer 344 rats.

Although the colon of the inbred F344 rat is not distinctly demarcated into ascending, transverse, and descending segments as in the human colon, it can roughly be divided into ascending and descending portions that show distinct light microscopic, histochemical, and ultrastructural features. The ascending colon is characterized by a "herringbone" pattern of mucosal folds and test-tube-shaped uniform crypts that contain mucous cells (MC) with abundant mucin (acidic mucopolysaccharide--mostly sialomucin) in the lower one-third of the crypt, whereas the upper one-third contains two putative cell

An unusual colonic mass in a phlebosclerosis patient.

A 47-year-old man with idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis presented to our hospital because of a 2-month history of diarrhea and edema of both lower limbs. Contrastenhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a 2-cm mass of mixed density in the ascending colon. On coloscopy, a solid, ulcerated, semi-pedunculated, lobulated protruding mass of 3.5×3.5×1.5 cm was observed and removed with hot snare polypectomy. Histologic examination demonstrated a hamartomatous polyp with normal epithelium and an inflammatory infiltrate with dilated, mucus-filled cystic glands in the lamina propria, ind

Reconstitution of intestinal continuity after extended left colectomy.

We wish to reintroduce an infrequently employed technique to re-establish intestinal continuity after extended resection of the left colon, transverse colon, and distal ascending colon. It involves bringing the proximal ascending colonic stump through the distal ileal mesenteric defect to reach the distal rectal stump in a tensionless fashion.

Distribution of myristoyl-CoA:protein N-myristoyl transferase activity in rabbit intestine.

Myristoyl-CoA:protein N-myristoyl transferase (NMT) attaches the fatty acid, myristate, to the amino-terminal glycine residue of various proteins involved in cellular regulation and/or signal transduction. We report differences in the activity and properties of NMT in New Zealand rabbit small intestine, ascending colon and descending colon. The mucosa of the small intestine, ascending colon and descending colon was assayed for NMT activity using peptides of known myristoylated proteins (pp60src and catalytic subunit of cAMP dependent protein kinase). Total NMT activity per gram tissue was 5-fo

Relationship Between Adenoma Detection Rate and Respective Withdrawal Time in Different Colon Segments: A Retrospective, Single-Center Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The 6-min withdrawal time for colonoscopy is widely considered the standard of care. However, there may not be appropriate if the 6-min is equally divided into various colon segments. Since the adenoma detection in each colon segment is not the same, there may be differences with the withdrawal time in different colon segments. Our objective was to evaluate the relationships between adenoma detection rate (ADR) and respective withdrawal time in different colon segments. METHODS: Outpatients, age range 18-75 years, undertaking complete colonoscopy were enrolled in this stu

Gross anatomy of the intestine and its mesentery in the nutria (Myocastor coypus).

The intestines and mesentery of the nutria (Myocastor coypus) have not been fully described. In the present study 30 adult nutrias were studied using gross dissection. The small intestine was divided into the duodenum, jejunum and ileum as usual. The duodenum started at the pylorus with a cranial portion, which dilated forming a duodenal ampulla. The ileum was located within the concavity of the caecum and attached to the coiled caecum by means of the iliocaecal fold. The ascending colon had two ansae, one proximal and one distal. The proximal ansa was fixed to the caecum by the caecocolic fol

Clinically diagnosed primary transitional cell carcinoma of the colon: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Most transitional cell carcinomas (TCCs) occur in the urinary tract. There are no reports of TCC originating in the colon. This report presents a very rare case of TCC that primarily occurred in the colon. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 78-year-old female presented with adenocarcinoma of the rectum and TCC of the ascending colon. She was screened for urologic and gynecologic carcinomas because the TCC was considered a metastatic lesion; however, cytodiagnosis of urine, the cervix and corpus uteri revealed no abnormal findings. An operation was performed, and histological examination re

[New aspects of the ontogenetic development of the human colon].

The parts of the fetal colon--later retroperitoneally located (ascending and descending colon)--were examined in 31 human fetuses in order to determine their ontogenetic formation, position, and dorsal attachment. The present data cast doubt upon so-called "descending of the caecum" described in current textbooks of embryology. Considering the literature available a new concept of the formation of the right colon flexure and the ascending colon is presented.

Colon stenosis due to acute neonatal appendicitis in a preterm baby: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Colon stenosis and acute appendicitis are rare diseases among premature babies. To the best of our knowledge, no study has identified both the conditions in preterm babies. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of a preterm Japanese male baby who developed ascending colon stenosis and appendicitis. During his neonatal intensive care unit stay, he developed increasing apnea and vomiting with rapidly worsening abdominal distention. Contrast radiographs indicated colon stenosis. Emergent exploratory laparotomy revealed ascending colon stenosis with appendix adhesion; both the lesi

[Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy with Complete Mesocolic Excision (CME)].

INTRODUCTION: Complete mesocolic excision (CME) is considered as good clinical practice according to the German S3 Guideline for colorectal cancer. This recommendation is based on evidence showing improved histopathological quality criteria of specimens taken and better oncological outcomes following CME surgery compared to conventional colon resections. However, CME surgery, especially of the right colon, is more complex - due to the high variability of the vascular structures (e.g. Truncus Henle) and the anatomical proximity to the stomach, duodenum and pancreas. To increase safety of laparo

Association Between Bowel Wall Thickening and Long-Term Outcomes in Decompensated Liver Cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Bowel wall thickening is commonly observed in liver cirrhosis, but few studies have explored its impact on the long-term outcomes of patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: Overall, 118 patients with decompensated cirrhosis were retrospectively enrolled, in whom maximum wall thickness of small bowel, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum could be measured in computed tomography (CT) images. X-tile software was employed to determine the best cut-off values of each segment of bowel wall thickness for predicting the risk of further decompensation

Equine large intestinal volvulus. A review of 124 cases.

The average age of 122 horses with ascending colon volvulus was 6.6 +/- 0.4 years. Gastric reflux was a presenting sign in 35% of the cases. Peritoneal fluid protein levels had a mean of 2.54 +/- 0.14 g/dl and 20 horses had grossly normal peritoneal fluid at the time of presentation. Ascending colon volvulus was most commonly found at the level of the cecocolic fold with the initial ventral colon movement in a dorsomedial direction about the ascending mesocolic axis. The overall survival rate was 34.7% with a recurrence rate of only 4.9%.

Motor responses to food of the ileum, proximal colon, and distal colon of healthy humans.

Intraluminal pressures and motility indexes were recorded from ileum, ascending colon, rectosigmoid colon, and rectum of 6 healthy men. Three different test meals were eaten at 5-hour intervals. During fasting, migrating motor complexes were identified in the ileum. In ascending colon, irregular, isolated peaks of pressure were common; when bursts of continuous activity occurred, their predominant frequency was 6/min. Regular contractile activity occurred in distal colon at a frequency of 2.5-3.5/min. although 3 subjects also demonstrated rates of 7/min. There were both synchronous and indepen

Chronic low-dose aspirin use does not alter colonic mucosa in asymptomatic individuals: a prospective cross-sectional study (STROBE 1a).

OBJECTIVES: Aspirin may be involved in microscopic colitis (MC) development, but there are no data on colon histology in asymptomatic aspirin users. We prospectively assessed colonic and rectal mucosa from aspirin users, searching for MC features. METHODS: From colonoscopy screenees, two biopsy samples were taken from each of three locations: ascending colon, transverse colon and rectum. A pathologist measured chronicity of inflammation and activity indicators, epithelial cell height and subepithelial collagen layer width. Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), intralaminal eosinophils and apopt

Laparoscopic high anterior resection for triple colorectal cancers with persistent ascending and descending mesocolons: A case report.

Persistent mesocolon is an embryological anomaly of the colon resulting from failure of the primitive dorsal mesocolon to fuse with the parietal peritoneum. We herein present a case of laparoscopic high anterior resection for triple colorectal cancers with persistent ascending and descending mesocolons and a right-bound inferior mesenteric artery. Preoperative 3-D CT demonstrated that the sigmoid colon had shifted to the right abdomen and was located under the ascending colon. Moreover, the inferior mesenteric artery and vein traveled toward the right abdomen accompanied by the mesentery of th

Circulating Tumor DNA Testing Overcomes Limitations of Comprehensive Genomic Profiling from Tumor Tissue.

"Liquid biopsy" is an established technique for examining circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) from a routine blood draw and detecting actionable biomarkers. Nonetheless, ctDNA testing is rarely utilized for patients with newly diagnosed metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). We report a case in which ctDNA testing uncovered an actionable biomarker that was not detected by comprehensive genomic profiling of tumor tissue. An 81-year-old woman with a remote history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presented with primary masses in the ascending colon and sigmoid colon. The ascending colon and sigmoid colon tumors
