Laboratory colonies of Anopheles gambiae, An. arabiensis, An. merus, An. quadriannulatus and Aedes aegypti formosus were artificially fed on blood containing microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti. The anopheline colonies all supported parasite development to the infective stage, with An. quadriannulatus being the most heavily infected. The parasite did not develop at all in the Ae. aegypti formosus colony.

8 patients with bone marrow failure after a caesium-137 radiation accident were treated with recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (rHuGM-CSF). The 7 who were evaluable had prompt increases in granulocytes and bone marrow cellularity. 2 patients died of radiation toxicity and haemorrhage and 2 of bacterial sepsis acquired before the start of rHuGM-CSF treatment. 4 patients survive, including 2 who were treated early and never became infected. Canine cyclic hematopoiesis (CH) is an autosomal recessive disease of gray collie dogs that is characterized by neutropenic episodes at 14-day intervals. The biochemical basis for CH is not known but may involve a regulatory defect of the response to or production of a hematopoietic growth factor. Sera of patients with primary myelofibrosis (PMF), primary thrombocythemia (PT), polycythaemia vera (PV) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) contained a significantly increased F-CSA (or F-CSAs) compared to those of normal subjects and patients with secondary thrombocytosis (ST). This F-CSA was heat sensitive and had the capacity to promote both proliferation and maturation of normal marrow fibroblast colony-forming cells (CFU-F). This F-CSA seemed to be different from human platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) from bovine brain.

The formation of erythropoietic colonies from the peripheral blood of normal subjects, patients with primary proliferative polycythaemia (PPP) and primary thrombocythaemia (PT) was studied, using a chemically defined serum-free (S-) medium. Colony formation was markedly more prominent in the presence of burst-promoting activity (BPA) and erythropoietin (Ep) than with medium alone (P less than 0.001). Bone marrow was cultured in vitro for colonies of granulocytes and macrophages five months after a patient had recovered from amodiaquine induced agranulocytosis. The addition of amodiaquine, chloroquine, and sulfadoxine to the culture was followed by a dose dependent inhibition of colony growth in the patient's marrow but not in normal control bone marrow. Colony growth was, however, unaffected by proguanil, pyrimethamine, and quinine. These findings show that in vitro marrow culture may have important predictive value in some cases of drug induced agranulocytosis.

We have found striking changes in the morphology of colonies of Chinese hamster ovary cells grown on agar containing low doses of dimethyl sulfoxide.
