The purpose of this study was to examine quality of life in laryngectomees using different methods of communication. A survey was mailed to all the living laryngectomees in Nova Scotia. Patients were asked to rate their ability to communicate in a number of common situations, to rate their difficulty with several communication problems, and to complete the EORTC QLQ-C30 quality-of-life assessment tool. Hand use in gestural communication was examined in 115 captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Hand use was measured in subjects while they gestured to food placed out of their reach. With the advent of antibiotics syphilis and its complications appear to have been declining as an important cause of cardiovascular disease. We describe a patient with an unusual aorto-pulmonary communication secondary to syphilitic aortitis. The case illustrates the difficulty in defining the anatomy of this rare association preoperatively. The reason for the rarity of this manifestation is discussed and finally doubt is cast upon the assumption that cardiovascular syphilis is of only historical interest.

A CT technique for measuring oesophageal cancer tumour volume in the monitoring of local disease response following radiotherapy or chemotherapy is described. A 6-month follow-up of an individual reported to engage in validated facilitated communication (FC) is presented. Four patients with postappendectomy abscesses complicated by enteric fistulae were treated by percutaneous drainage. Sinograms, obtained at the time of the initial drainage, demonstrated communication to the cecum in 3 patients and to the small bowel in 1 patient. Complete cure was attained in 3 patients by percutaneous drainage. In the fourth patient, surgery was performed after 7 days of catheter drainage. Percutaneous drainage of abscesses with enteric communication requires a modified technique, which includes longer-term drainage than for simple noncommunicating abscesses.

Pulmonary sequestrations involving communication with the digestive tractus are known as bronchopulmonary foregut malformations. The authors add a peculiar case report: there was an hypoplastic right lung with a total sequestration from the bronchial tree and communicating with esophagus. This was fed from the pulmonary vasculature without collateral artery formation. The pulmonary vein was normal. Association with a facial dysmorphia and an occipital meningocele is also of interest. The radiological diagnosis is based on the pulmonary X-Ray and the oesophagogram.
