This professional practice report describes the multifaceted worker health and safety approaches to protecting agricultural workers and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: Between March 2020 and January 2025, several outreach, education, and training grants from various funding agencies were leveraged to deliver training, personal protective equipment, vaccines, and economic relief to agricultural workers in partnership with com

A team of researchers, including one behavioral scientist (S.M.N.) and three epidemiologists (L.Q., O.S. and S.N.) conducted community analyses to assess the social and cultural factors that affect the detection and reporting of disease cases in a surveillance system, using acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance in Niger as a case study. Over a 60-day period in the country, the research team reviewed written field reports and interviewed epidemiologists, nurses, community members and persons in governmental and non-governmental organizations. Overall, we found that the logistical difficult

BACKGROUND: Social accountability approaches, which emphasize mutual responsibility and accountability by community members, health care workers, and local health officials for improving health outcomes in the community, are increasingly being employed in low-resource settings. We evaluated the effects of a social accountability approach, CARE's Community Score Card (CSC), on reproductive health outcomes in Ntcheu district, Malawi using a cluster-randomized control design.
METHODS: We matched 10 pairs of communities, randomly assigning one from each pair to intervention and control arms. We c

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is an important problem amongst young children living in rural India. However, there has not previously been a detailed study of the biological aetiology of this anaemia, exploring the relative contributions of iron, vitamin B12, folate and Vitamin A deficiency, inflammation, genetic haemoglobinopathy, hookworm and malaria. Nor have studies related these aetiologic biological factors to household food security, standard of living and child feeding practices. Barriers to conducting such work have included perceived reluctance of village communities to permit their children t

BACKGROUND: Postpartum sepsis accounts for most maternal deaths between three and seven days postpartum, when most mothers, even those who deliver in facilities, are at home. Case fatality rates for untreated women are very high. Newborns of ill women have substantially higher infection risk.
METHODS/DESIGN: The objectives of this study are to: (1) create, field-test and validate a tool for community health workers to improve diagnostic accuracy of suspected puerperal sepsis; (2) measure incidence and identify associated risk factors and; (3) describe etiologic agents responsible and antibact…

Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women migrant workers is a globally significant public health problem. This study examined the prevalence and predictors of IPV among 639 Myanmar women migrants in central, northern, western, and southern Thailand, applying the World Health Organization's (WHO) ecological framework and utilizing the WHO Violence Against Women questionnaire. The lifetime prevalence of IPV was 60.09%, with psychological violence being the most common form (54.93%). Multiple logistic regression revealed significant predictors: women's alcohol consumption and childhood expos

In Uganda, human onchocerciasis is controlled by annual, mass, community-directed, ivermectin-treatment programmes (CDITP) in all endemic communities where the prevalence of the disease is > or = 30%. This is a practical, long-term and cost-effective strategy. In some communities, this system succeeds in providing treatment at the desired level of coverage (i.e. 90% of the annual treatment objective, which is itself equivalent to all those individuals eligible to take ivermectin). Other communities, however, fail to reach this target. The aim of the present study was to determine the factors t

PURPOSE: People living with Motor Neurone Disease (plwMND) have emphasised the importance of psychological support and well-being in helping them manage their condition. Social prescribing is a formal process of referring patients with largely socioeconomic and psychosocial issues to a link worker to co-design a plan to improve their health and well-being. Intervention involves supporting engagement in meaningful activities based within the individual's local community. This pilot project aimed to explore the application of social prescribing with plwMND.
METHODS: A cohort of plwMND were supp

Veterans experiencing homelessness have complex physical, mental health, and substance use disorders that impact their ability to obtain and maintain housing. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) maintains robust homeless programs with MSW social workers as case managers. In the absence of on-site specialized healthcare services, there is a gap in communication between the homeless program social worker and the broader healthcare system. This article reports on the development and implementation of a six-month interdisciplinary project designed to provide the homeless program social worker

BACKGROUND: Meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine (MACV) was introduced in 2017 into the routine childhood immunization schedule (at 15-18 months of age) in Burkina Faso to help reduce meningococcal meningitis burden. MACV was scheduled to be co-administered with the second dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV2), a vaccine already in the national schedule. One year following the introduction of MACV, an assessment was conducted to qualitatively examine health workers' perceptions of MACV introduction, identify barriers to uptake, and explore opportunities to improve coverage.

BACKGROUND: People with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (PWH) experience barriers to care within the community that impedes their progress from when they discover that they are HIV positive to becoming virally suppressed. For individuals with HIV to achieve sustained viral suppression, they must be linked to care to start receiving anti-retroviral therapy and remain retained in care for continuous treatment. However, HIV surveillance data shows that many PWH are not linked to care and become lost to continuous follow-up care. Although pharmacists, PWH, and social workers interact with one ano

Violence in healthcare also poses a threat to patient safety and the quality of patient care. Objective: The aim of the research is to get an idea of whether healthcare workers in Hungarian healthcare institu-tions, if they get involved in violent conflict, have someone to turn to at their workplace. It aims to explore whether communication, simulation and self-defense trainings are held in institutions, and to examine the relationship be-

Three neonates and 5 health care workers were identified as colonized with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) out of 222 individuals screened during an outbreak investigation in an 18-bed neonatal intensive care unit. Two of 3 MRSA neonatal isolates demonstrated identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis clonal patterns but no clonal association was found among isolates from the 5 employees or between employees and neonates. Increased MRSA-unrelated strain colonization among health care workers supports increased MRSA community prevalence and probable decreased utility of mass
