Screening and Management of Perinatal Depression in Nepal: The Need for Urgent Action.

Perinatal depression is one of the most neglected public health concerns among reproductive-age women in resource-limited countries, such as Nepal. Currently, there is a lack of standardized protocols to screen and treat women for depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period in Nepal. Additionally, healthcare providers are often not adequately trained to identify and treat perinatal depression. This, coupled with the stigma related to mental health issues and a lack of community resources, can delay the identification and treatment of perinatal depression among women. The purpose of t…

"We try to help each other out": Older immigrants' perceptions of their support resources.

The number of older migrants is steadily increasing in immigration-receiving countries. Studies show that older immigrants tend to be vulnerable to poverty, health problems, and mental distress. They often face barriers when seeking formal assistance and rely on informal support from family and community members. The present study aims to explore the experiences and perceptions of older immigrants regarding the support resources available to them as they navigate the challenges of their multifaceted needs in their host country. The study involved in-depth interviews with 21 older immigrants (a

The availability of neighborhood early care and education resources and the maltreatment of young children.

Using Census and administrative data for 2052 Census tracts in a large urban county, this study explores the relationship between several indicators of social organization and neighborhood rates of child maltreatment for 0- to 5-year-olds. Spatial regression models demonstrate that neighborhoods with a higher percentage of 3- and 4-year-olds attending preschool or nursery school, both locally and in adjacent neighborhoods, had lower rates of early maltreatment referrals and substantiations. Neighborhoods with more licensed child care spaces relative to child care need, as defined by the number

Overview of the Type I Diabetes Genetics Consortium.

The Type I Diabetes Genetics Consortium (T1DGC) is an international, multicenter research program with two primary goals. The first goal is to identify genomic regions and candidate genes whose variants modify an individual's risk of type I diabetes (T1D) and help explain the clustering of the disease in families. The second goal is to make research data available to the research community and to establish resources that can be used by, and that are fully accessible to, the research community. To facilitate the access to these resources, the T1DGC has developed a Consortium Agreement (http://w

Global health goals: lessons from the worldwide effort to eradicate poliomyelitis.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched in 1988. Assessment of the politics, production, financing, and economics of this international effort has suggested six lessons that might be pertinent to the pursuit of other global health goals. First, such goals should be based on technically sound strategies with proven operational feasibility in a large geographical area. Second, before launching an initiative, an informed collective decision must be negotiated and agreed in an appropriate international forum to keep to a minimum long-term risks in financing and implementation. Third,

Qualitative insights on emergency preparedness and response to marburg virus disease in Ghana: The role of risk communication and community engagement.

OBJECTIVES: Faith-based healthcare providers have played pivotal roles in recent public health responses to disease outbreaks, such as Ebola, COVID-19, and Marburg Virus Disease. However, the literature on their performance remains scarce. This research therefore evaluates the risk communication and community engagement capacity of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) during the Marburg Disease Virus outbreak in Ghana. METHOD: Data were obtained from 15 clinical and nonclinical health workers affiliated with CHAG and the Ghana Health Service (GHS). Online interviews were conducted

Life experiences among urban adolescents: examining the role of context.

Interest in the influence of context on the psychosocial development of adolescents led to the examination of neighborhood effects on the experience of adolescent life stress. Because of concerns regarding the population and ecological validity of existing measures of adolescent life events, the research group developed a scale for the measurement of life events among urban adolescents based on data from focus group interviews in the community of interest. Investigators utilized three strategies to examine the impact of neighborhood on adolescents' perceptions of life stress in a sample of 114

Providing instruction in independent living and vocational rehabilitation for individuals with head injuries within an entry-level occupational therapy curriculum.

With the goal of occupational therapy being to assist persons in living independently, few occupational therapists (OTs) work in independent living and vocational settings or are heavily engaged in independent living and vocational interventions. Ultimately, clients suffer when attempting to reintegrate into the community without adequate resources, especially persons with head injuries who present with numerous disabilities. Perhaps OTs are not well-trained to provide these services. This paper describes the incorporation of information about service provision within the independent living an

Inclusive health: modeling COVID-19 in correctional facilities and communities.

BACKGROUND: Mass incarceration, commonly associated with overcrowding and inadequate health resources for incarcerated people, creates a fertile environment for the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in U.S. correctional facilities. The exact role that correctional facilities play in enhancing COVID-19 spread and enabling community re-emergence of COVID-19 is unknown. METHODS: We constructed a novel stochastic model of COVID-19 transmission to estimate the impact of correctional facilities, specifically jails and state prisons, for enhancing disease transmission and enabling di

Factors influencing community recovery decision making: A case study of the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires.

When large-scale disasters impact entire communities, those communities must in turn collectively negotiate the recovery process and associated recovery decisions. While these decisions affect the recovery outcomes of the community as a whole, they also affect the community's constituent members. How resources are allocated, and which interests are privileged during recovery can contribute to the varying recovery outcomes experienced by different members of a community. In this context, the process of deciding who gets what, when and how during recovery becomes especially relevant. This paper

Acne and acne scarring - the case for active and early intervention.

Acne as a disease is so common as to be considered a normal rite of passage, and costs the community a substantial amount in resources. Yet acne is a devastating disease striking most adolescents at their most vulnerable time when their life long self esteem and sense of identity is being developed. This article reviews the importance of acne to the individual and attempts to make the case for early and aggressive treatment.

Resource Allocation and Interference Coordination Strategies in Heterogeneous Dual-Layer Satellite Networks.

In the face of rapidly evolving communication technologies and increasing user demands, traditional terrestrial networks are challenged by the need for high-quality, high-speed, and reliable communication. This paper explores the integration of heterogeneous satellite networks (HSN) with emerging technologies such as Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), in-network caching, and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to enhance service efficiency. By leveraging dual-layer satellite networks combining Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites, the study addresses resource allocation

Design of Personal Health Libraries for People Returning from Incarceration in the United States.

Individuals with a history of incarceration face many barriers to accessing resources to meet their basic needs when returning to community settings. Digital health tools have potential to reduce health inequities by facilitating connections to health and social services, and peer support. This study aimed to employ a user-centered design approach to create a digital Personal Health Library (PerHL) for previously incarcerated individuals. The design process included in-depth interviews followed by rapid analysis, interpretation sessions, and user experience/user interface (UX/UI) design of a h

[Work-related stress and resources of psychosomatic patients compared to the general population].

Work-related stress is an important determinant of the development of psychosomatic complaints and of the success of psychosomatic treatments. In order to specify work-related stress and resources in relation to the general population, 461 consecutive inpatients in psychosomatic rehabilitation were compared to matched pairs (age, sex, occupational status) from a representative community survey, the German Socio-economic Panel (GSOEP). Psychosomatic inpatients reported overall higher work stress than their matched pairs of the general population, the rank order of the stress factors as well as

Substrate complexity and species number jointly shift the balance between competition and facilitation in a chitin-degrading bacterial consortium.

Biopolymer-degrading microbial communities exhibit complex interactions like division of labor, sharing of public goods, and resource-competition, resulting in intricate social dynamics between their diverse members that shape the functions they perform. How these interactions shift with substrate complexity as species number increases remains largely unresolved, especially as substrate type can fluctuate. Here, we investigated how these factors modulate microbial interactions and community functioning in a synthetic three-species chitin-degrading soil bacterial consortium. All mono-, duo-, an

In vivo amplified skills training: promoting generalization of independent living skills for clients with schizophrenia.

In Vivo Amplified Skills Training, IVAST, functions to bridge the gap between clinic-based skills training and use of social and independent living skills in everyday life for persons with schizophrenia and other serious and persistent mental illness. IVAST utilizes a specialist case manager who provides individualized, community-based teaching using behavioral techniques to promote clients' use of skills that were learned in classroom group sessions. The IVAST trainer also liaises with the client's psychiatrist and other clinic-based staff, family members, and community agencies to create opp
