The data on the presence of antibodies to morphine and neurotransmitters (dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin) in the blood serum of chronic alcoholics are presented. The antibodies were detected by the modification of complement-fixation test. 82% of chronic alcoholics showed significantly elevated levels (P less than 0.01) of antibodies to morphine (5.34 +/- 0.65% of complement fixed) when compared to the control group (2.41 +/- 0.52% of complement fixed), which was an indirect evidence of the presence of endogenous morphine-like compounds in men and their role in the pathogenesis of the dis

Sixteen patients with bullous pemphigoid were examined using direct and indirect immunofluorescent techniques with antisera specific for C1q, C4, C3, C5, C3 proactivator, properdin, fibrinogen, IgA, IgM, IgG and IgE. The results of these studies are consistent with the activation of complement via the classical (antibody–C1q) sequence as well as via the alternate pathway. Fibrinogen and/or fibrin derivatives were demonstrated on the basement membrane of ten of fifteen patients tested and IgE basement membrane staining was found in four individuals.

Examination of syphilitic serum or cerebrospinal fluid can be made at any temperature between 23 degrees and 37 degrees C. Diagnosis of infection caused by Chlamydia pneumoniae, a newly recognized respiratory pathogen, has proved difficult. Between July 1987 and April 1988, culture and serologic tests for C. pneumoniae were done on specimens from 49 patients with pneumonia seen at an Atlanta hospital emergency room. A competitive ELISA (Brucella-Ab c-ELISA) was standardized and validated for the detection of Brucella antibodies in cattle, sheep and goat sera using a monoclonal antibody (MAb 4B5A) produced against Brucella melitensis biotype 2. The specificity and sensitivity of the assay were 100% to a 67.5% cut-off point (B/Bo%). Fungal antigens with good reactivity and specificity are essential for the immunodiagnosis of systemic mycoses. We give here data on crude and purified antigens of Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidioidis immitis and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis from local strains and which are the more prevalent in Mexico. Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) continues to be a rare disease in the Scandinavian countries; cases are, with rare exceptions, contracted elsewhere. The clinical manifestations of LGV include extragenital infections such as pharyngitis, with cervical lymphadenopathy, and proctitis. Delayed diagnosis can lead to late complications, with disabling anatomic defects as an end result. Diagnosis usually is based on clinical grounds, with serological confirmation. A new ELISA test using the purified Listeria monocytogenes-derived antigen LM 84 Ag is described together with its application in the diagnosis of listeriosis. Fifty-seven human sera were titrated by the ELISA and the complement fixation method and compared for specificity and sensitivity. The problem of possible cross-reactions with other antigens is discussed.

An in vitro model for the study of pemphigus acantholysis has been developed. The histological changes of pemphigus vulgaris were reproduced in vitro in organ culture by growing normal human skin in the presence of pemphigus vulgaris or pemphigus foliaceus sera. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adapted for detection of IgG antibodies against adenovirus hexon in the sera and tears of patients with eye diseases. The ELISA procedure is more sensitive than complement fixation test for the detection of antihexon antibodies; it allows the seroconversion to be seen in the course of infection and convalescent period. The ELISA procedure has been used for testing specimens from a group of 66 patients with keratoconjunctivitis of adenoviral etiology.

A major obstacle to successful organ transplantation in sensitized recipients is antibody-mediated hyperacute rejection. We hypothesized that human recombinant soluble complement receptor type 1 (sCR1), which inhibits activation of the complement cascade at multiple stages, would delay this process. 63 cases of extraintestinal amoebiasis, 17 cases of intestinal amoebiasis, and 25 selected control persons were examined for serum antibodies to antigen from E. histolytica using the counter-immunoelectrophoresis, the complement fixation test, the indirect haemagglutination test and the latex agglutination test. In addition counter-immunoelectrophoresis was applied to 41 sera from patients with extraintestinal amoebiasis whose other serological results were included in a previous study.
