Efficacy of Midazolam in Outpatient Pediatric Dentistry: A Systematic Review.

AIMS: The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the efficacy, advantages and adverse effects of midazolam in outpatient pediatric dentistry. METHODS: This review was carried out in accordance with the PRISMA criteria. A systematic electronic search was conducted through MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases up to September 2024. An advanced and reproducible search strategy was used to identify relevant studies. Articles were excluded if they focused solely on midazolam as a premedication for general anesthesia or elective surgery, involving patients with special di

Erythrocyte pyruvate kinase deficiency. The influence of physiologically important metabolites on the function of normal and defective enzymes.

The dependence of the erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (PK)-catalyzed reaction on the glycolytic intermediates glucose-6-phosphate (Gluc-6-P), 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) and the nucleotides ADP and ATP was studied in normal individuals and 14 patients with PK deficiency. The Gluc-6-P concentrations in the erythrocytes are markedly elevated (4- to 6-fold) in 9 patients with severe hemolytic anemia compared to those 5 exhibiting a mild clinical course (up to 2-fold increased). 2,3-DPG is elevated up to 2 times compared to the controls whereas the measured ADP and ATP only slightly deviate from

Kondo interaction in FeTe and its potential role in the magnetic order.

Finding d-electron heavy fermion states has been an important topic as the diversity in d-electron materials can lead to many exotic Kondo effect-related phenomena or new states of matter such as correlation-driven topological Kondo insulator. Yet, obtaining direct spectroscopic evidence for a d-electron heavy fermion system has been elusive to date. Here, we report the observation of Kondo lattice behavior in an antiferromagnetic metal, FeTe, via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy and transport property measurements. The Kondo lattice behavior is repres

Long-term prognosis of complex partial seizures in childhood.

We studied the long-term prognosis of complex partial seizures in childhood including their electroencephalograms, behavioral problems and adaptation to school or society. In the clinical course, seizures were controlled in 25 cases out of 40 (62.5%). The rate of seizure control was significantly higher in cases with a past history of febrile convulsions, whose onset occurred before 6 years of age and in whom the CT scans were normal. Behavioral, motor and emotional problems included "clumsiness" in 25%, "poor athletes" in 22.5%, "hyperactivity" in 17.5% and "easily enraged" in 12.5% of the ca

Dissociable glucocorticoid and noradrenergic effects on parochial cooperation and competition in intergroup conflict.

Stress changes social behavior, yet its effects remain contradictory. Traditionally, stress was thought to trigger an antagonistic fight-or-flight response aimed at eliminating the stressor. However, recent studies have revealed the opposite response, tend-and-befriend, where individuals prosocially invest in their social network in exchange for support and mutual protection. We hypothesize that stress does not promote one response over the other; instead, it stimulates both behaviors, dissociable on the neuropharmacological level and moderated by social context. In a placebo-controlled, doubl

Behavior of conduct disordered children in interaction with each other and with normal peers.

This study investigated the behavior of children with conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder (CD/ODD) in interaction with each other and with normal control (NC) children in a semi-standardized setting over a period of 25 minutes. This short time turned out to be sufficient to demonstrate the behavioral manifestations of CD/ODD in children's interactions with peers. In addition, the role of the interactional partner on antisocial behaviour of CD/ODD children became apparent.

Teachers' ratings of disruptive behaviors: the influence of halo effects.

This study evaluated the accuracy of teachers' ratings and examined whether these ratings are influenced by halo effects. One hundred thirty-nine elementary school teachers viewed videotapes of what they believed were children in regular fourth-grade classrooms. In fact, the children were actors who followed prepared scripts that depicted a child engaging in behaviors characteristic of an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), an oppositional defiant disorder or a normal youngster. The findings provide support for a bias that was unidirectional in nature. Specifically, teachers rated

An assessment of a continuing care program.

In mid-1977 the Kern County (Calif.) Department of Mental Health Services undertook a survey of residents and operators of group and family care homes in the county to obtain their views on how services in the homes might be improved and to assess the level of skills of the patients placed there. A total of 139 former patients and 26 operators agreed to be interviewed. The results showed that few of the patients had overt behavioral problems and most were capable of self-care. For the most part the patients were satisfied with the homes, although problems related to finances and lack of outsid

Making a difference: 5 years of Cardiac Surgery Intersociety Alliance (CSIA).

Informed by the almost unimaginable unmet need for cardiac surgery in the developing regions of the world, leading surgeons, cardiologists, editors in chief of the major cardiothoracic journals as well as representatives of medical industry and government convened in December 2017 to address this unacceptable disparity in access to care. The ensuing "Cape Town Declaration" constituted a clarion call to cardiac surgical societies to jointly advocate the strengthening of sustainable, local cardiac surgical capacity in the developing world. The Cardiac Surgery Intersociety Alliance (CSIA) was thu

Global health leadership training in resource-limited settings: a collaborative approach by academic institutions and local health care programs in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Due to a limited health workforce, many health care providers in Africa must take on health leadership roles with minimal formal training in leadership. Hence, the need to equip health care providers with practical skills required to lead high-impact health care programs. In Uganda, the Afya Bora Global Health Leadership Fellowship is implemented through the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) and her partner institutions. Lessons learned from the program, presented in this paper, may guide development of in-service training opportunities to enhance leadership

The pathway between conflict and reconciliation: coexistence as an evolutionary process.

A normative sequence of six stages is proposed to describe the process of evolution from open conflict to harmonious coexistence, as well at its devolution from the latter to the former. The stages may be termed Confrontation, Truce, Collaboration, Cooperation, Interdependence and Integration. Each of the six stages constitutes an amalgam of practices, narratives and prevalent emotions in a relational "game" that tends to resist change. At the stage of Confrontation, each party assumes that any act of the other is motivated by ill intent, and active hostility prevails. In Truce or Freeze, acts

ICE COLD ERIC--International collaborative effort on chronic obstructive lung disease: exacerbation risk index cohorts--study protocol for an international COPD cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a systemic disease; morbidity and mortality due to COPD are on the increase, and it has great impact on patients' lives. Most COPD patients are managed by general practitioners (GP). Too often, GPs base their initial assessment of patient's disease severity mainly on lung function. However, lung function correlates poorly with COPD-specific health-related quality of life and exacerbation frequency. A validated COPD disease risk index that better represents the clinical manifestations of COPD and is feasible in primary care seems to be

A prospective multicentre otology database.

UNLABELLED: WHY IS AN INTERNATIONAL OTOLOGY DATABASE IMPORTANT? There are many reports on the outcome of otological interventions in the literature. However, it is difficult to make direct comparisons between these reports because of the lack of uniformity in reporting outcomes and patient selection. The aim is to create an interactive otology database for surgeons in the UK and Europe. METHODOLOGY: The proposed project is the creation of a common database on a website. Two levels of data entry are available: (1) level I: minimum database (only main outcomes are included; for any otolaryngolo

A retrospective study of chloral hydrate, meperidine, hydroxyzine, and midazolam regimens used to sedate children for dental care.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was twofold: a) to examine the behavior and physiology of pre-school children each sedated with 1 of 3 drug regimens based on patient age, dental needs, and pre-operative clinical impression; and b) to determine the association between pre-operative behaviors to the behavior and physiology of the sedated children. METHOD: Records of more than 600 patients sedated at Columbus Children's Hospital dental clinic over a two-year period were culled for patients who ranged in age from 2 to 5 years of age and had received one of three different drug re

Interactions between oral commensal Candida and oral bacterial communities in immunocompromised and healthy children.

Candida species are usually found as commensal microorganisms in the oral cavity of healthy people. During chemotherapy, cytostatic drugs lead to depletion of the oral flora with the emergence of a dominant bacterial species. The transition from commensal to pathogenic state, further associated with yeast colonization and oral mucositis implies a replacement of the dominant microorganism by Candida albicans. This process goes plausibly through cooperation between C. albicans and bacteria. This study focused on the first step of cooperation between microorganisms isolated from the same oral flo

The neural dynamics underlying the interpersonal effects of emotional expression on decision making.

Although numerous studies explore the effects of emotion on decision-making, the existing research has mainly focused on the influence of intrapersonal emotions, leaving the influence of one person's emotions on another's decisions underestimated. To specify how interpersonal emotions shape decision-making and delineate the underlying neural dynamics involved, the present study examined brain responses to utilitarian feedback combined with angry or happy faces in competitive and cooperative contexts. Behavioral results showed that participants responded slower following losses than wins when c
