Increased axon number in the anterior commissure of mice lacking a corpus callosum.

Relatively few behavioral deficits are apparent in subjects with hereditary absence of the corpus callosum (CC). The anterior commissure (AC) has been suggested to provide an extracallosal route for the transfer of interhemispheric information in subjects with this congenital defect. Anterior commissure size, axon number, axon diameter, and neuronal distribution were compared between normal mice and those with complete CC absence. No difference in midsagittal AC area was found between normals and acallosals, nor were differences found in the numbers or diameters of myelinated axons. However, a…

Agenesis of corpus callosum and dementia of the Alzheimer's type: a review and case report.

This paper describes a previously sufficiently functioning 57 year old man who presented with a recent onset of frontal behaviour. Partial agenesis of corpus callosum was an incidental finding on a computerized tomography scan. The EEG was within normal limits and neuropsychological testing did not reveal any interhemispheric disconnection. A SPECT-Scan revealed bilateral hypoperfusion, consistent with Alzheimer's dementia. Normal functioning up to 50 years of age and a later manifestation of Alzheimer's disease along with agenesis of carpus callosum is of clinical interest as such an associat…

Decreased interhemispheric EEG coherence during sleep in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Inter- and intrahemispheric EEG coherence was studied in 4 subjects with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and in 4 matched controls through different states of the sleep/wakefulness cycle. Interhemispheric coherence was calculated between homologous prefrontal, frontal, central, parietal and occipital electrode pairs whereas intrahemispheric coherence was calculated between all adjacent, unihemispheric electrode pairs. EEG samples were recorded from stage 2, stages 3 + 4 and stage REM sleep and the eyes closed waking state. Interhemispheric coherence measures indicated lower values for AC…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum and epilepsy in two brothers. Neurophysiological and MRI features.

We report on two brothers with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum and seizure disorder presumably related to ectopic grey matter. Development of both patients was characterized by psychomotor retardation and focal epileptic seizures. Genetic examination revealed normal karyotypes. One brother showed a remarkable focal miniature spike and wave periodicity constantly observed on sequential EEG records. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed partial agenesis of the corpus callosum and ectopic grey matter. Prior computerized tomography failed to visualize ectopic grey matter and overestimated co…

X-linked recessive inheritance of dysgenesis of corpus callosum in a Chinese family.

This report describes a new syndrome of dysgenesis of corpus callosum with other anomalies, presenting as microcephaly, mental retardation, spasticity, and unusual facial appearance in 2 Chinese brothers and their maternal cousins. To date, there has not been any case reported in the Chinese population of this syndrome. All 4 patients in this report present with the same unusual face. Hydrocephalus and/or interhemispheric cyst were found among them. This syndrome is transmitted as an X-linked trait. The nosology is reviewed and discussed.

[Glio-ependymal cyst in the lateral ventricle complicated by agenesis of the corpus callosum].

The case is that of a 5-year-old male who was admitted to the hospital for a further examination because of the onset of seizure observed twice. He was delivered at full term by Cesarean section, and had had impairment of movement of his left hand since birth. The results of the first examination performed at the time of his admission to the hospital revealed mild neurological disturbance of the left hand. The CT scanning performed showed partial agenesis of the corpus callosum and a bicameral cyst enhancing the cystic wall extending from the right anterior horn of the lateral ventricle to the…

[Arteriovenous aneurysm of the corpus callosum with normal arteriography 9 years earlier].

Some arteriovenous malformations (A.V.M.s) visualized on a first angiography tend to enlarge gradually with time. Others A.V.M.s may decrease in size and even disappear. The authors report the case of a 18 year old woman admitted for a subarachnoid hemorrhage. A complete cerebral angiography was normal. Nine years later, an arteriovenous malformation of the corpus callosum was discovered. The reasons why angiography may fail to demonstrate an A.V.M., and the theories concerning the enlargement of A.V.M.S., are discussed.

MR imaging of the corpus callosum: normal and pathologic findings and correlation with CT.

The MR appearance of the corpus callosum was investigated in 80 normal volunteers. Normal variations in appearance were recorded with regard to age, gender, and handedness. The MR studies of 47 patients with a wide spectrum of callosal disease were also reviewed. Abnormalities included trauma, neoplasia, congenital abnormalities, vascular lesions, and demyelinating and inflammatory conditions. The information provided by MR was compared with that obtained from other radiographic examinations, particularly CT and angiography. In all cases MR provided as much, and frequently more, information th…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: real-time ultrasonographic diagnosis and autopsy findings.

Ultrasonographic appearances of agenesis of corpus callosum and its associated abnormalities are described in four cases. Clinical data, ultrasonographic diagnostic criteria, and correlation with neuropathological findings are presented. Ultrasound is the method of first choice in the neonatal period for the detection of cerebral malformations and more particularly of agenesis of corpus callosum.

On the neurons with dendrites intermingling with the fibers of the human corpus callosum: a Golgi picture.

Golgi preparations of the anterior part of the truncus of the corpus callosum from 11 adult human brains were investigated. The vertical plane of section was situated symmetrically between the frontal and sagittal plane. The use of this oblique plane of section enabled easy identification of the neurons with dendrites intermingling with transcallosal fibers, what was not possible in standard frontal sections. 2 types of such neurons (with features of other interstitial neurons) were described: fusiform and multipolar. Both types of neurons were more frequently impregnated in areas adjacent to …
