This report describes a recessively inherited frontonasal malformation termed "frontorhiny" in recent literature. The authors developed a modified open rhinoplasty incision for correction of a broad, swollen columella due to frontorhiny. The clover-shaped flap was composed of a central V–Y advancement flap and bilateral folding flaps. This report relates the case of an 8-year-old girl with a broad columella and poor nasal tip development treated by a clover-shaped flap with dorsal onlay augmentation using autologous rib cartilage. This clover-shaped flap technique may be useful not only in fro

AIM: To investigate an outbreak of severe craniofacial deformity in yellow-eyed penguin (Megadyptes antipodes, hōiho) chicks at a single breeding site on the Otago Peninsula in the South Island of New Zealand.
METHODS: Morbidity and mortality of yellow-eyed penguins breeding on the coastal regions of Otago was monitored from November 2008 to March 2009. Dead chicks and unhatched eggs were recovered and examined. Between October and December 2008 32 eggs were recorded at 17 nests in the Okia Reserve. Eleven chicks survived to about 90 days of age, of which eight were found to have moderate to

Postpartum evaluation of the foal's head and mouth are performed to detect craniofacial malformations and other congenital defects. Detailed oral examination and diagnostic imaging can provide diagnostic and prognostic information about congenital abnormalities of the mouth or skull. Important abnormalities of foals include wry nose, cleft palate, overbite (parrot mouth), and underbite (monkey mouth, sow mouth). Tumors and cysts can be detected in young horses. In juvenile horses, primary dental care procedures include oral examination, management of sharp enamel points, management of deciduou

BACKGROUND: A holistic nursing care system for patients with cleft lip-palate (CLP) and/or craniofacial deformities was arranged by the Nursing Department, Srinagarind Hospital, which provides tertiary nursing care. The nursing care system was developed as per system theory via participating management with action research following the Deming Cycle (PDCA) divided into 3 phases. Participants included 117 nurses from 8 divisions caring for patients with CLP and 128 parent caregivers. The research instruments included: 1) situation analysis, 2) meeting and planning and 3) self-administered quest

After the craniofacial structures have completed embryologic development, movement of facial muscles begins. Paraxial mesoderm of the first (mastication) and second pharyngeal (facial expression) arches gives rise to the muscles of the craniofacial area. Muscles derived from the third and fourth pharyngeal arches are involved in swallowing and vocalization. For the human newborn face to have a normal morphologic appearance, contractions of these muscles must occur to stimulate forward growth of bone, cartilage growth, and facial muscle bulk. Facial muscles begin to contract between 6 and 8 wee

Due to early diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus, neurosurgeons rarely are called upon to treat patients with extreme hydrocephalic macrocephaly. Macrocephaly can limit mobility and hygiene. The critical evaluation and surgical correction of the morphological problem of macrocephaly secondary to hydrocephalus is complex. Various techniques such as quadrantal, picket fence, crossbar, and modified rr techniques have been used to reduce the size of the cranial vault to decrease cranial volume while achieving good cosmesis. Limitations of vault reduction cranioplasty include the inability to

Anomalies of the extraocular muscles have been suspected to be present frequently in patients with craniofacial malformations. We studied the extraocular musculature in the orbits of 15 anencephalic human fetuses between the 5th and 10th months after gestation, and in one fetus with an occipital meningocele and a large defect of the left cranial base. The findings were compared to those in nine normal age-matched fetuses. All malformed fetuses exhibited special features of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, either its absence, an anomaly of the muscle belly, or an anomalous insertion. In

Human skull is made up of many bone joints connected by sutures. The sutures fuse in later life after the complete growth of the brain. If any of these sutures closes early, it may interfere with the normal growth of the brain. The developing brain may exert pressure on the skull and may grow in the direction of the other open sutures. Premature sutural fusion may occur alone or together with other anomalies, making up various syndromes. Crouzons syndrome is an example of such a syndrome that is associated with premature synostosis of the sutures of the skull. Presented in this article is a ca

This article addresses treatment of patients with various types of congenital defects, including partial and total anodontia, hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia, dentinogenesis imperfecta, and cleft lip and palate. The psychosocial aspects of these patients and rehabilitation with removable, fixed, and implant-supported prostheses are discussed. The factors to be considered are altered anatomy, lack of teeth or malformed teeth, teeth in abnormal positions, lack of facial growth, and altered arch development. The short- and long-term treatment of patients in these categories is discussed.

We report a Japanese family with Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome (GCPS), in which the grandmother, mother, and daughter were affected. They each had the same characteristics including bilateral seven toes, hypertelorism, and esotropia. Bilateral seven toes and esotropia had followed over three generations and have not previously been reported in this syndrome. The present case with bilateral seven toes and esotropia may be a new type.

The surgical correction of craniofacial clefts is an extremely difficult field in pediatric plastic surgery. Facial clefts are rare entities that most plastic surgeons will rarely have to manage. Various surgical techniques devised by some authors for facial clefts have not still widely accepted. The bifid nose deformity is generally an indicator of Tessier No:0 clefts, with various degrees of skeletal problems. The nasal roof area is an important key point in determining the appropriate surgical technique for reconstruction. In this report, a case of Tessier No:0 with a moderate nasal bifidit

The effect of botulinum toxin A (BTX) was studied on 12 patients with idiopathic craniofacial hyperhidrosis. After confirming the diagnosis by Minor's iodine starch test we first treated one-half of the forehead with an injection of 2.5-4 ng BTX (Dysport) equidistantly intracutaneously. After 4 weeks we assessed the efficacy by another Minor's iodine starch test and then treated the other half. Another 4 weeks later a standardized telephone interview was carried out. After 1-7 days the craniofacial sweating in the area injected had completely ceased in 11 patients and was mildly reduced in the

Since its first description few cases of the rare association of macrocephaly with multiple soft tissue and visceral hamartomas (Bannayan-Zonana syndrome) have been reported. In this paper we report a case of a 7 year old child in whom lipomas of the abdomen and right flank have been treated with liposuction. We could find no previous evidence that this surgical technique has been used in the treatment of this syndrome.

A 34-month-old boy presented with clinical manifestations of Teebi hypertelorism syndrome including prominent forehead with frontal bossing, hypertelorism, exophthalmos due to shallow orbits, a short and broad nose with anteverted nares, small hands and feet with interdigital webbing, umbilical hernia, and shawl scrotum. In addition, he had previously undescribed manifestations including tetralogy of Fallot, bilateral inguinal testes, and bifid scrotum. His phenotypically normal mother showed splayed labiae majora during her pregnancy, a possible manifestation of the syndrome.

Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical-orthopedic method for lengthening bone by separating or distracting a fracture callus. This technique has a long history in limb lengthening and has recently been used to lengthen mandibles and maxillae in human patients. Distraction osteogenesis represents a powerful method of producing unlimited quantities of living bone which can be formed along any plane of space. Because this method uses local host tissue, it offers many advantages over bone grafting. In the author's experience, large (10-22 mm) antero-posterior and vertical corrections of mandibles

Diastrophic dysplasia (DTD) is a well-characterized, recessively inherited osteochondrodysplasia. Thirty-seven patients were studied for transverse craniofacial characteristics. Of these patients, 10 had cleft palate and 11 had submucous cleft palate. A cephalometric analysis based on posteroanterior (PA) cephalograms was performed: 16 landmarks were identified and digitized into a computer. Seven linear and four angular variables were calculated and the values compared with those of a matched control population. DTD patients differed from controls only in cases with cleft palate where the mes
