Infected Dentigerous Cyst and its Conservative Management: A Report of Two Cases.

AIM: To check the efficacy of decompression technique in children with dentigerous cysts. BACKGROUND: Most commonly occurring odontogenic cysts in the oral cavity are radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts.1 According to Kramer, a cyst is defined as a pathological cavity having fluid, semi-fluid, or gaseous contents, which is not created by the accumulation of pus. A cyst which is lined by epithelium is known as a true cyst and that which is not lined by epithelium known as a pseudocyst.2 The dictionary meaning of dentigerous is "structures resembling teeth".3 A dentigerous cyst is found envel

Echinococcus granulosus cysts in the liver: management with percutaneous drainage.

Twenty-one hepatic Echinococcus granulosus cysts (maximal diameter, 7.5 cm +/- 4.0) in 12 patients were aspirated and irrigated with hypertonic (20%) saline under sonographic guidance. All patients had signs and symptoms of a hepatic mass caused by the cysts, which had a prominent fluid component that appeared anechoic or hypoechoic, with marked enhancement of back wall echoes. The amounts of cyst fluid aspirated and of hypertonic saline used were 190 mL +/- 240 and 120 mL +/- 90, respectively. Separation of the endocyst from the pericyst and nonviability of scoleces were observed in all cysts…

Repurposing calcium-sensing receptor activator drug cinacalcet for ADPKD treatment.

ADPKD is characterized by progressive cyst formation and enlargement leading to kidney failure. Tolvaptan is currently the only FDA-approved treatment for ADPKD; however, it can cause serious adverse effects including hepatotoxicity. There remains an unmet clinical need for effective and safe treatments for ADPKD. The extracellular Ca2+-sensing receptor (CaSR) is a regulator of epithelial ion transport. FDA-approved CaSR activator cinacalcet can reduce cAMP-induced Cl- and fluid secretion in various epithelial cells by activating phosphodiesterases (PDE) that hydrolyze cAMP. Since elevated cAM

Olfactory colloid cyst: case report and review of extraventricular colloid cyst literature.

OBJECTIVE: A rare case of an extraventricular colloid cyst located in the olfactory groove extending downward into the ethmoid sinus is presented. This is the second reported case in the world literature. METHODS: A 56-year-old-woman presented with a lesion that was causing hyposmia and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea. The lesion was an extraventricular colloid cyst displacing the left olfactory nerve downward and eroding into the left ethmoid sinus. RESULTS: The lesion was excised, and the anterior skull base was reconstructed successfully via a unilateral subfrontal approach. CONCLUSIONS:

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst.

A soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst located in the right gluteus medius of a 21-year-old man is reported. On conventional radiography, the lesion demonstrated a spherically trabeculated mass with a calcific rim. On CT scan, it showed a well-organized peripheral calcification resembling a myositis ossificans. On MRI, it presented as a multilocular, cystic lesion with fluid-fluid levels. The lesion had no solid components except for intralesional septa. Although findings on imaging and histology were identical to those described in classical aneurysmal bone cyst, diagnosis was delayed because of

Implication of cortisol and 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzymes in the development of porcine (Sus scrofa domestica) ovarian follicles and cysts.

This study investigated cortisol inactivation by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11beta HSD) enzymes in porcine granulosa cells from an … nhibition by FF from small antral follicles (P < 0.001) to 23 +/- 6% by large antral FF (P < 0.05). Cyst fluid inhibited 11beta HSD1 activity by 59 +/- 4% (P < 0.001). Likewise, net cortisol oxidation in granulosa cells was significantly decreased by large antral FF (35-48% inhibition, P < 0.05) and cyst fluid (45-75% inhibition, P < 0.01). We conclude that …

[Primary sacral epidural hydatid cyst: a case report].

Primary epidural hydatid cyst of the spinal canal without bone involvement is very rare. The authors report the case of a 35 year old man presenting with lower cauda equina compression. MRI showed a cystic lesion with signal characteristics similar to cerebrospinal fluid. Surgical exploration through a midline posterior approach was used which confirmed the hydatid nature of the cyst. There was no bone lesion. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Hydatid cyst should be suspected in case of cystic lesion causing cord compression or cauda equina syndrome.

Bronchogenic cysts in the adult: diagnostic criteria derived from the correct use of standard radiography and computed tomography.

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to identify the radiographic and computed tomography patterns allowing a diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed chest radiographs and CT scans of 21 adults (ten men and 11 women, age range 18-74 years) with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst. RESULTS: Sixteen cysts were located in the mediastinum and five in the lungs. On chest radiography, mediastinal cysts appeared as sharply marginated rounded areas of increased opacity; intrapulmonary cysts also exhibited an air-fluid interface. CT confi

Incidental findings on dental radiographs: dentigerous cyst.

Dentigerous cysts are the second-most-common cysts occurring in the jaws. A dentigerous cyst is formed as a result of fluid accumulation in the reduced enamel epithelium surrounding an unerupted tooth. These cysts typically present as well-defined pericoronal radiolucencies either superior or lateral to the unerupted tooth. Dentigerous cysts involving the posterior maxillary teeth tend to grow into and fill the maxillary sinus and, hence, are discovered late. Posterior mandibular dentigerous cysts commonly extend well into the ramus. There are often no clinical symptoms, with the exception of

[Retroperitoneal chylous cyst].

In pathology, cysts of the retroperitoneum are usually classified together with omental and mesenteric cysts. Because of risk of complications and malignancy these cysts should be extirpated. The frequency of complications and recurrence after surgery is significantly higher for retroperitoneal cysts than for the other types mentioned above. We describe a patient with a retroperitoneal chylous cyst of three litres. Correct diagnosis was made by CT-scan and chemical analysis of cyst fluid prior to surgery. The cyst was removed completely using an intercostal, retroperitoneal approach. The posto…

A proposed mechanism of superficial siderosis supported by surgical and neuroimaging findings.

Superficial siderosis is a rare disease with a low incidence of known etiologies and successful management in clinical practice. The presence of a fluid collection secondary to a dural tear has been reported in patients and is considered to be related to superficial siderosis. We report on a patient with superficial siderosis who had a multi-lobulated arachnoid cyst incarcerating the inner dural layer and showing rhythmic pulsations indicating the free connection with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. Surgical removal of the arachnoid cyst and leakage repair halted the progression of clin

Retroclival arachnoid cyst.

Retroclival arachnoid cyst is a rare mass lesion, with only seven cases previously reported in literature. MR is the imaging modality of choice in its evaluation and in its differentiation from epidermoid cyst. The case reported here was surgically proved and had an uncharacteristic MR signal intensity that was higher than that of cerebrospinal fluid due to previous hemorrhage.

[Incidental cystic structures in the upper abdomen: to remove or not to remove?].

An abdominal cystic structure was diagnosed incidentally in two women aged 44 and 52 years, respectively. The first patient had a mesenteric cyst that was removed because of its malignant potential. The second had a duodenal duplication cyst which was not removed due to the minor risk of complications. Two other patients, a man aged 19 years and a woman aged 40 years, were referred with mechanical complaints due to a splenic cyst and a hepatic cyst, respectively. The splenic cyst was removed surgically and the hepatic cyst was treated by sclerotherapy. Cysts are fluid-filled cavities that can

Macropuncture study of polycystic disease in adult human kidneys.

Solute composition, volume, and hydrostatic pressure were measured in cysts from eight patients with the adult form of polycystic kidney disease (PCKD). Five azotemic patients had elective nephrectomies in preparation for renal transplantation, two nonazotemic patients had their polycystic kidneys removed several weeks after a successful renal allograft, and one nonazotemic cadaver was inadvertently nephrectomized as a potential kidney donor. In all patients, the pattern of solute concentrations in cyst fluid segregated into two principal groups: Proximal cysts had sodium, potassium, chloride,…

A Case of Infected Renal Cyst Complicated by Renal Vein Thrombosis.

Renal vein thrombosis (RVT) is not an uncommon condition in patients occurring nephrotic syndrome. Renal cyst by bacterial infection is also rare. Only one case for RVT complicated with infected renal cyst is reported in the English literature. A 78-year-old female was admitted for fever and drowsy mentality for 4 days. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the abdomen showed 3.7 cm sized irregular shaped exophytic cyst well enhanced in left kidney upper pole and the left RVT. Primary epithelial splenic cyst with micro-rupture and raised carbohydrate antigen CA 19-9: a paradigm of management.

Epithelial splenic cysts are rare entities that surgeons might not have previously encountered and their management is based on historical studies. A 21-year-old female presented with a cyst of the spleen that produced a high serum concentration of carbohydrate antigen CA 19-9. A partial splenectomy with the removal of the entire cyst and preservation of splenic parenchyma by laparotomy was performed and the patient made an uneventful recovery. A microscopic rupture of the wall of the cyst and degradation of blood in the fluid of the cyst were confirmed. Eighteen months following surgery a fun
