IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory condition characterized by elevated serum IgG4 levels and dense infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells with fibrosis in affected organs. Since its initial recognition, clinical awareness of IgG4-RD has expanded, and head and neck involvement has become increasingly well described. Among these, IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis (IgG4-DS), historically referred to as Mikulicz’s disease, represents the most common manifestation. Patients typically present with persistent, painless swelling of the major salivary and lacr

A case of maxillary frontal process fracture complicating an acute endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy is presented. The management of this previously unrecorded complication and the corrective procedure that resulted in both patient and clinician satisfaction is described.

A case of chronic Actinomyces canaliculitis with associated pyogenic granuloma formation and bloody tears is described. Although Actinomyces is a well-known cause of canaliculitis, the authors are not aware that it has been reported in association with pyogenic granulomas.

Mycotic lacrimal canaliculitis is a rare eye disease. Overuse of antibiotics and steroids in the treatment of eye infections is a very serious risk factor. Initial diagnosis of the mycotic infection may be difficult, thus infection may lasts for months. Chronic conjunctivitis, itching, burning sensations, poor response to the treatment may suggest a suspicion of the mycosis. In our paper we report two cases of the mycotic lacrimal canaliculitis, diagnosis and treatment. We could not culture fungal colonies, but we have found fungal structures in direct microscopic detection during the examinat

BACKGROUND: Acute dacryoadenitis is an uncommon disease.
CASE: We present what we believe to be the first reported case of herpes zoster ophthalmicus with the onset of acute dacryoadenitis.
OBSERVATIONS: A 30-year-old man complained of severe ocular pain and hyperemia in his right eye. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated enlargement of the right lacrimal gland and acute dacryoadenitis was diagnosed. Two days after treatment with systemic antibiotics he developed iridocyclitis and skin lesions confined to the first division of the trigeminal nerve; therefore, herpes zoster ophthalmi

We report a rare case of lymphocytic hypophysitis followed by dacryoadenitis. Lymphocytic hypophysitis is a rare disease that can easily be mistaken for neoplastic proliferation. Because combination with rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis, or pernicious anemia is frequent, an immunological pathogenesis is likely.

Histological examination of 99 human lacrimal glands showed a relationship between atrophy of the secretory acini and secretory duct obstruction, ascending periductal fibrosis, and obliteration of the adjacent blood vessels caused by lymphocytic and polymorphonuclear inflammation. Investigation of the subgroups of the B lymphocytic series by immunohistochemistry did not show any statistical change with age, sex, fibrosis, or lymphocytic inflammation. The concept of senile atrophy occurring as a result of senescent involution of the lacrimal gland is challenged on the basis of the histological

A 4 1/2-year-old girl presenting characteristics of Waardenburg's syndrome with associated multiple defects is described. The patient presents all the obvious signs of the syndrome with the exception of the white forelock (poliosis), but with additional anomalies like: syndactyly, absence of the fourth left toe, bilateral preauricular sinus and dacrocystitis. It is the second case of Waardenburg's syndrome reported by us during the last 20 years.

The evoluation of various types of dacryocystorhinostomies has been reviewed. The indications for operation are discussed. A simplified technique of surgery is illustrated and described in detail. The advantages of the method are: (1) The elimination of elaborate methods to remove the lacrimal bone while preserving the nasal mucosa. (2) The avoidance of the necessity of suturing the nasal mucosa membrane to the sac flaps. (3) The use of a comfortable, inconspicuous, easily inserted and easily removed silicone sponge stent to help avoid closure of the osteotomy.
