"They're Not Willing To Accommodate Deaf patients": Communication Experiences of Deaf American Sign Language Users in the Emergency Department.

Deaf people who use American Sign Language (ASL) are more likely to use the emergency department (ED) than their hearing English-speaking counterparts and are also at higher risk of receiving inaccessible communication. The purpose of this study is to explore the ED communication experience of Deaf patients. A descriptive qualitative study was performed by interviewing 11 Deaf people who had used the ED in the past 2 years. Applying a descriptive thematic analysis, we developed five themes: (1) requesting communication access can be stressful, frustrating, and time-consuming; (2) perspectives

Outcomes of Cochlear Implantation for Single-Sided Deafness and Asymmetric Hearing Loss: Quality of Life, Tinnitus, and the Effect of Deafness Duration.

OBJECTIVES.: To evaluate multidimensional outcomes of cochlear implantation (CI) in adults with single-sided deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL), and to examine how duration of deafness influences speech perception, tinnitus severity, and hearing-related quality of life. METHODS.: This retrospective cohort study included 124 adults with SSD or AHL who underwent unilateral CI at a tertiary referral center (September 2019-October 2024) with at least 12 months of postoperative follow-up. The primary outcome, hearing-related quality of life, was assessed using the Speech, Spatial, and…

Deaf-led Deaf Awareness Training in the Emergency Department: A Pre-Post Evaluation of Staff Knowledge, Confidence, and Communication Preparedness.

INTRODUCTION: Communication access is essential for safe emergency care, but D/deaf patients (D/deaf used here to include people identifying as culturally Deaf and those with audiological difference) frequently experience barriers that limit their ability to participate in decision-making. Emergency clinicians often lack formal training in Deaf cultural and linguistic needs, interpreter use, and visually accessible communication strategies. This study evaluated whether a brief deaf awareness training session could improve emergency department staff's self-rated knowledge and confidence in cari

"They still phone even though they know I'm deaf": exploring experiences of deaf people in health services in Wales, UK.

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing people persistently experience barriers accessing health services, largely due to ineffective communication systems, a lack of flexible booking arrangements, and a lack of Deaf awareness training for health professional staff. METHODS: Face to face focus groups were conducted with 66 Deaf and hard of hearing people in Deaf clubs across Wales, UK. Thematic analysis was undertaken. RESULTS: Responses identified from focus groups are reported as barriers faced using health services, improvements that would make a difference, impact of accessibility of health

Posttraumatic Growth in Postlingually Deaf Patients With Cochlear Implants: The Effect of Stress-Coping Strategies, Sociodemographics, and Deafness-Related Factors.

The aim of this study was to assess whether cochlear implant (CI) users who had been postlingually deaf developed a more positive outlook on … blems Experienced (Brief COPE), and a form asking for personal details and factors related to their deafness and CI use. The PTG of postlingually deaf CI users was similar to that found in people with other severe health problems. The time that had elapsed since the hearing was lost and the time from receiving a CI were positively correlated with PTG. The …

Sociocultural and Academic Considerations for School-Age d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Multilingual Learners: A Case Study of a Deaf Latina.

For decades , research has focused on American Sign Language/English bilingual education for d/Deaf and hard of hearing students whose families used English or ASL. However, a growing population of d/Dhh children come from households where languages other than English (e.g., Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese) are used. In a longitudinal case study, the authors document the K-12 educational pathway of a deaf Latina student. Anecdotal records, semistructured interviews, assessment data, and document reviews of the participant's school and clinical records are used to develop the case study. The findi

Time course of visual plasticity following adult-onset deafness.

While this compensato … lational bridge between basic science and clinical research. Over a 400-day period post adult-onset deafness, we observed gradual amplification in VEP signal power and P1 amplitude, alongside shortened peak latency. Our findings provide evidence that adult-onset deafness can induce compensatory visual plasticity and highlights VEPs as a promising biomarker …

Everyday challenges and solutions for individuals aging with deafness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Approximately 11 million people in the United States self-identify as Deaf and use American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary form of communication. Yet, little is known about the challenges and solutions in everyday activities of individuals who are aging with long-term deafness. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used a community-engaged research approach to understand everyday challenges and solutions of 60 older ASL users who self-identified as Deaf. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in ASL to probe challenges and responses to those challenges across six…

Assessment of Nasality in Adult Patients with Partial Deafness.

The basic tone of the human voice is generated in the larynx, which is reinforced by and derives its distinctive features from the resonance of the oral and nasal cavities An inappropriate ratio between oral and nasal resonance results in a more nasal timbre of the voice, which is referred to as nasality (hypernasality). Nasality is often present in hearing-impaired patients, and various studies have shown that hypoacusis, including partial deafness (PD), causes voice disorders as a result of disturbed control over the complex process of voice production. This study describes our investigation…

Situating word deafness within aphasia recovery: A case report.

Word deafness is a rare neurological disorder often observed following bilateral damage to superior temporal cortex and canonically defined as an auditory modality-specific deficit in word comprehension. The extent to which word deafness is dissociable from aphasia remains unclear given its heterogeneous presentation, and some have consequently posited that word deafness instead represents a stage in recovery from aphasia, where auditory and linguistic processing are affected to varying degrees and improve at differing rates. Here, we report a case of an individual (Mr. C) with bilateral tempo…

Functional Studies of Deafness-Associated Pendrin and Prestin Variants.

Pendrin and prestin are evolutionary-conserved membrane proteins that are essential for normal hearing. Dysfunction of these proteins results in hearing loss in humans, and numerous deafness-associated pendrin and prestin variants have been identified in patients. However, the pathogenic impacts of many of these variants are ambiguous. Here, we report results from our ongoing efforts to experimentally characterize pendrin and prestin variants using in vitro functional assays. With previously established fluorometric anion transport assays, we determined that many of the pendrin variants identi…
