Compositional Properties of Soup Stock Prepared From Femur Bones of Yeso Sika Deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis).

Soup stock was prepared solely from Yeso sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) femurs by heating at 80°C-90°C under normal pressure for 6-48 h. Total nitrogen generally increased with extraction time, with no significant differences among the 18- to 48 h conditions; within this range, the observed mean was highest at 36 h, which was therefore selected as the representative condition for compositional analysis. The 36 h stock contained 99.6 g/100 g moisture and 0.4 g/100 g crude protein and had a pH of 8.6. Fifteen free amino acids were detected (total, 1.45 mg/100 mL), with glutamic acid (Glu) t…

Community Assembly Reveals How Environmental Controls Over Rodent Competition Drive Deer Mouse Density and Hantavirus Infection.

Host diversity can strongly influence disease prevalence, but whether it dilutes or amplifies disease remains debated. We applied community assembly theory to examine whether conditionality from abiotic and biotic filtering could explain variation in rodent diversity and Sin Nombre hantavirus (SNV) prevalence across 24 locations in the southwestern United States. Overall, community composition, not diversity per se, drove diversity-disease relationships. Environmental factors determined community composition, which regulated primary host abundance and SNV infection via resource competition. Ac

Deer antler polypeptides promote osteogenesis for fracture healing via activating neurosensory PGE2/EP4/p-CREB axis.

BACKGROUND: Deer antler polypeptides (DAPs), one of the most bioactive components of deer antler, have been reported to possess multiple biological functions. However, the role of DAPs in fracture healing remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the therapeutic effects of DAPs on fracture healing and elucidate their potential pharmacological mechanism. METHODS: LC-MS/MS was employed to analyze the peptide compositions and serum metabolites of DAPs. Sensory nerve-specific EP4 receptor knockout (EP4 Avil ) mice, sensory nerve- and skeletal stem/progenitor cells-specific fluorescence repo…

Intelligent Veterinary Disease Management Driven by Knowledge Graph for Conservation Breeding of Captive Forest Musk Deer.

In artificial breeding of forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii), common diseases such as abscess, enteritis, pneumonia, and parasitic infections exhibit persistently high morbidity rates. The early symptoms of certain diseases are often insidious and difficult to discern. Conventional manual inspection routines not only fail to achieve accurate diagnosis but also frequently disturb the animals, induce stress responses, and consequently delay optimal treatment windows. To address this practical challenge, this study employs an improved BRW-GPLinker joint entity-relationship extraction approach…

Deer Antler Extract Promotes Osteoblast Differentiation and Improves Bone Microarchitecture in an Ovariectomy-Induced Osteoporosis Model.

Deer antler has long been recognized for its pronounced influence on bone growth and regeneration via its unique ability to induce rapid repeated ossification. This study aimed to investigate whether deer antler water extract (DWE) can prevent osteoporosis by promoting osteoblast differentiation and preserving bone microarchitecture. In vitro experiments using MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cells demonstrated that DWE enhanced osteoblast differentiation without affecting cell viability. DWE increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity; intensified ALP, Von Kossa, and Alizarin Red S staining; and upr…

Mannheimia granulomatis-Infected Pyogranulomatous Oral Lesions with Concurrent Amyloidosis in Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) in France.

Mannheimia granulomatis-associated lesions have been poorly described compared with those associated with other members of the Pasteurellaceae family; they include pneumonia, panniculitis, and keratoconjunctivitis in domestic and wild ruminants and hares. We describe 15 cases of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) showing M. granulomatis-infected oral lesions that were detected in France between 2016 and 2023. Comprehensive necropsies were performed, with additional analyses based on findings. All deer were >15 mo of age on the basis of tooth eruption. They were thin (1/15), cachectic (13/15), or o…

Predicting suitable habitat of swamp deer (Rucervus duvaucelii) across the Western Terai Arc Landscape of Nepal.

Over the last few years, intensifying human impact and the deterioration of natural habitats have severely restricted the global distribution of large herbivores. Rucervus duvaucelii, commonly recognized as the swamp deer, is a habitat-specialist endemic large herbivore of the Indian Subcontinent. It is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN and listed in CITES Appendix I due to a steep decline in its population, which is primarily due to anthropogenic causes. In Nepal, the last remaining population of this species is confined to limited pocket areas within the western Terai Arc Landscape. We ex…

Liver Proteome Alterations in Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) Infected by the Giant Liver Fluke Fascioloides magna.

Liver fluke infections are recognised as diseases with worldwide distribution and considerable veterinary and public health importance. The giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, is an important non-native parasite which has been introduced to Europe, posing a threat to the survival of local wildlife populations such as red deer (Cervus elaphus). The aim of the study was to analyse differences in liver proteomes between F. magna-infected and control red deer groups using a label-based high-throughput quantitative proteomics approach. The proteomics analysis identified 234 proteins with differe…

EFFICACY OF WHITE-TAILED DEER (ODOCOILEUS VIRGINIANUS) TREATMENT FOR CATTLE FEVER TICKS IN SOUTHERN TEXAS, USA.

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) serve as a host for cattle fever ticks (Rhipicephalus [Boophilus] microplus and Rhipicephalus [Boophilus] annulatus; CFTs); therefore, deer are a concern for CFT control programs in southern Texas, US. Systemic (oral delivery of ivermectin) and topical (permethrin on pelage) treatment devices have been developed for white-tailed deer; however, the efficacy of these treatment options has not been determined for CFTs in southern Texas. Our objectives were to evaluate the effectiveness of CFT treatment strategies by 1) measuring exposure rates of deer to…

Uterine fluid proteome changes during diapause and resumption of embryo development in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

The uterine microenvironment during pre-implantation presents a pro-survival milieu and is essential for embryo elongation in ruminants. The European roe deer (Careolus capreolus) pre-implantation embryo development is characterised by a 4-month period of reduced development, embryonic diapause, after which the embryo rapidly elongates and implants. We investigated the uterine fluid proteome by label-free liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry at four defined stages covering the phase of reduced developmental pace (early diapause, mid-diapause and late diapause) and embryo elongation. …

Novel Detection of Coxiella spp., Theileria luwenshuni, and T. ovis Endosymbionts in Deer Keds (Lipoptena fortisetosa).

We describe for the first time the detection of Coxiella-like bacteria (CLB), Theileria luwenshuni, and T. ovis endosymbionts in blood-sucking deer keds. Eight deer keds attached to a Korean water deer were identified as Lipoptena fortisetosa (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) by morphological and genetic analyses. Among the endosymbionts assessed, CLB, Theileria luwenshuni, and T. ovis were identified in L. fortisetosa by PCR and nucleotide sequencing. Based on phylogeny, CLB 16S rRNA sequences were classified into clade B, sharing 99.4% identity with CLB from Haemaphysalis longicornis in South Korea. …
