Effectiveness of endodontic tissue engineering in treatment of apical periodontitis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics has evolved in recent years with tissue engineering concepts in particular appearing promising. Endodontic tissue engineering (ETE) describes the various approaches based on the orthograde introduction of scaffolds or biomaterials (with or without cells) into the root canal to achieve pulp tissue regeneration. There are currently no systematic reviews investigating whether ETE is a suitable method for the treatment of endodontic disease in both mature and immature permanent teeth. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effec

Anti-bacterial Efficacy of Zirconium Oxide Nanoparticles on Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis: An In Vitro Study.

Introduction Complex interactions between cariogenic bacteria and host factors modulate dental caries. Streptococcus mutans, a gram-positive facultative anaerobe plays a prominent role in the initiation of caries. The ability of S. mutans to adhere to salivary enamel pellicle results in an acidic local habitat for the organism. This leads to demineralization of the tooth and penetration of bacteria into the pulp leading to endodontic infections. Enterococcus faecalis, an opportunistic pathogenis a gram-positive, facultative anaerobe implicated in secondary endodontic infections. This study aim

Injectable laponite nanocomposite hydrogel with synergistic antibacterial and odontogenic activity for endodontic regeneration.

Persistent pulpitis often leads to irreversible dentin defects and pulp necrosis, posing significant challenges for functional dental restoration. To address the critical limitation of insufficient odontogenic differentiation in dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), we develop an injectable photo-crosslinking methacrylated hyaluronic acid hydrogel (PLSr2+@HAMA) containing laponite-based ternary nanocomposites which self-assemble by laponite, strontium ions (Sr2+), and antibacterial peptide P-113. We demonstrate that PLSr2+@HAMA features three distinctive advantages: (1) Unique injectability enabling

Antimicrobial susceptibility of monoculture biofilms of a clinical isolate of Enterococcus faecalis.

The purpose of this study was to create a monoculture biofilm of a clinical isolate of Enterococcus faecalis and to determine susceptibility against four antimicrobial irrigants. Biofilms were subjected to 1-, 3-, and 5-minute exposures to one of the following irrigants: 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) or one of two new products, <6% NaOCl with surface modifiers (Chlor-XTRA) or 2% CHX with surface modifiers (CHX-Plus) (Vista Dental Products, Racine, WI). It was hypothesized that NaOCl and CHX would be equally effective and that addition of surface modifiers wou

Detection of anaerobic odontogenic infections by fluorine-18 fluoromisonidazole.

Odontogenic infections are a potential risk for patients who receive cervicofacial radiotherapy and should be treated before irradiation. Anaerobic microbial infections are the most common causes. This study assessed the value of the hypoxic imaging agent fluorine-18 fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) in detecting anaerobic odontogenic infections. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging was performed at 2 h after injection of 370 MBq (10 mCi) of FMISO in 26 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients and six controls with healthy teeth. Tomograms were interpreted visually to identify hypoxic foci in the jaw.

Whole Tooth Regeneration: Can Animal Studies be Translated into Clinical Application?

Tooth loss leads to several oral problems and although a large number of treatments have been proposed to rehabilitate partially or totally edentulous patients, none of them is based on replacement of a missing tooth by a new natural whole tooth. In the field of tissue engineering, some animal models have been developed to regenerate a natural tooth in the oral cavity. This review shows the state of the art in whole tooth regeneration based on data from in vivo studies. A systematic scoping review was conducted to evaluate studies that described whole-tooth regeneration and eruption in the ora
