Pustular allergic contact dermatitis to isoconazole nitrate.

The topical imidazole antimycotics are widely used and are an infrequent cause of contact allergy. We report on a woman, who developed an unusual clinical picture of allergic contact dermatitis, namely papulo-pustular reaction, evoked by an isoconazole nitrate-containing cream. The histopathologic changes included subcorneal pustules, spongiosis, and an inflammatory infiltrate composed mainly of lymphocytes and some eosinophils and neutrophils. The patient demonstrated a severe vesicular reaction to isoconzole nitrate as is and at an imidazoles concentration of 0.5%. No cross-reactivity with o

Occupational contact dermatitis due to nickel allergy.

Contact allergy to nickel is a large dermatological problem affecting 10-15% of women and 1% of men in the general population. The aim of this study was to illustrate the significance of occupational nickel exposure in men. Patch testing was carried out to identify patients with nickel allergy and the dimethylglyoxime test was used to identify sources of nickel exposure. 8% of the men and 30% of the women were patch-test positive to nickel. Most of the patients had hand eczema, and a few had facial eczema. Tools and equipment used in different jobs by workers such as carpenters, electricians,

Contact dermatitis from beryllium in dental alloys.

An increasing number of metals with the potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis have found their way into dental alloys for economic and practical reasons. 2 patients are reported who developed gingivitis adjacent to the Rexillium III alloy in their dental prostheses. Patch testing demonstrated positive reactions to beryllium sulfate, a component of the alloy. Components of dental alloys and the mechanism of the contact dermatitis are discussed.

Oscar Wilde's skin disease: allergic contact dermatitis?

During the last years of his life, Oscar Wilde (1856-1900) suffered from a suppurating otitis media as well as from an unidentified skin disease. The eruption was localized to his face, arms, chest and back and itched severely. A new theory is suggested, based on the fact that Wilde almost certainly used a dye to conceal his rapidly graying hair. He sensitized himself to p-phenylenediamine and developed a stubborn allergic contact dermatitis. Patch testing, the only proof of such a diagnosis, had not yet been devised.

Occupational contact dermatitis in New South Wales.

Five hundred and seventy patients with occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) were seen between 1984 and 1990 at the Skin and Cancer Foundation in Sydney. Data derived from these patients demonstrated that hairdressing, food, construction and the medical industries were the most at risk of OCD. The hairdressing and food industries had a high percentage of apprentices suffering OCD whilst the 35 to 44 year age bracket was most at risk in the construction industry. Allergic contact dermatitis was responsible for 38.2% of cases. The main allergens were chromate, thiuram, epoxy resin, nickel and co

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by nitroglycerin.

Irritant contact dermatitis caused by occupational contact with nitroglycerin has been known since the end of the last century. Nitroglycerin is an allergen, and the transdermal drug delivery systems for nitroglycerin recently used to treat angina pectoris have sensitized. 4 patients with allergic contact dermatitis caused by nitroglycerin from explosives are described, and 1 patient who was sensitized by transdermal nitroplaster. On patch testing, dynamite and/or the explosive components nitroglycerin, ethylene glycol dinitrate and dinitrotoluene gave allergic reactions. The following concent

Pigmented contact dermatitis due to musk moskene.

Musk moskene is a soft, sweet fragrance resembling musk ambrette which introduces a very desirable creamy powder note for cosmetic fragrance. Because of its advantages, which include low cost, oil solubility, and less sensitive to sunlight, musk moskene has recently increased its share of the market. In this paper, we reported a case with pigmented contact dermatitis from musk moskene in cheek rouges. Patch test positive reactions to cheek rouges resulted in hyperpigmentation. Both the perfume used in the cheek rouges and musk moskene, which was a component of that perfume, showed strongly pos

Facial contact dermatitis. Pathogenetic factors in China.

In 107 cases of facial contact dermatitis, routine Finn chamber epicutaneous tests with TROLAB European Standard Allergens (ESAs) were performed. Sixty-one (57%) had positive reaction. The most frequent contact allergens were paraphenylenediamine dihydrochloride (16%), followed by fragrance mix (15%), and nickel sulfate (13%). The major sensitized contactants were rims of spectacles, hair dyes, cosmetic creams, and topical medications. Among the cases caused by cosmetic cream, the positive allergens were fragrance mix, formaldehyde, wood alcohols, and balsam of Peru. In ten season-incidence ca
