Preventing Occupational Skin Disease: A Review of Training Programs.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is a common occupational disease that impacts a variety of worker groups. Skin protection and disease prevention training programs have shown promise for improving prevention practices and reducing the incidence of OCD. This review details the features of training programs for primary prevention of OCD and identifies gaps in the literature. Twelve studies were identified for in-depth review: many studies included wet workers employed in health care, hairdressing, cleaning, and food preparation; 1 program featured manufacturing workers. Few programs provide

Nickel-induced hypersensitivity: etiology, immune reactions, prevention and therapy.

As a contact allergen causing type I and type IV hypersensitivity, mediated by reagins and allergen-specific T lymphocytes, expressed in a wide range of cutaneous eruptions following dermal or systemic exposure, nickel has acquired the distinction of being among the most frequent causes of hypersensitivity, occupationally as well as among the general population. In synoptic form the many effects that nickel has on the organism are presented, to provide a comprehensive picture of the aspects of that metal with many biologically noxious, but metallurgically indispensable characteristics. This pa

A nurse-led clinic in chronic and allergic contact dermatitis.

It has generally been acknowledged that the incidence and prevalence of contact dermatitis has increased in recent years. It can develop at any stage of a person's life span (rare before puberty), and in many different circumstances and occupations. The demand on consultant dermatologists for contact dermatitis services has resulted in the depletion of some essential components to the investigation process, and patient outcomes have been affected. In recent years it has also resulted in the development of nurse-led contact dermatitis services. The traditional role of the dermatology nurse in c

Teaching interventions in contact dermatitis.

Prevention of occupational contact dermatitis is of utmost significance for both insurers and legislators because it can preserve the individual's ability to work and result in decreased costs for public health. In the last 20 years, many concepts for educational interventions and a multitude of teaching aids have been developed by insurance associations and public institutions from different countries (eg, the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, and Germany). For didactic purposes, terms of different levels of prevention have been inaugurated in northern Europe in the context of occu

A descriptive study of occupational skin disease.

AIM: To describe the types and proportions of occupational skin disease presenting to a private dermatology practice. METHODS: Patients presenting to a private dermatology practice between May 1987 and May 1993, and in whom a diagnosis of occupational skin disease was confirmed formed the basis of the study. Their files were searched for information on diagnosis, age, sex, and occupation. RESULTS: Contact dermatitis accounted for nearly 70% of cases. The food, hairdressing, and medical industries accounted for over a third of occupational skin diseases. CONCLUSION: These results are similar

[Occupational Dermatoses in Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Narrative Review].

INTRODUCTION: On the 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic. Preventive measures such as the appropriate use of personal protective equipment and proper hand hygiene are essential in decreasing transmissibility. Healthcare workers have been required to wear personal protective equipment and to wash their hands even more frequently. These preventive measures are associated with an increased risk of skin conditions, namely, contact dermatitis and exacerbation of pre-existing skin lesions such as acne and seborrheic dermatitis. The aim

[Work-related contact and photocontact allergy in a farmer caused by chlorpromazine].

A farmer specialized in pig-breeding showed acute dermatitis of his hands, forearms and face after using chloropromazine for the sedation of pigs. Epicutaneous and photo-patch tests showed positive reactions to chloropromazine. Further tests with other occupational materials were negative. This observation points out that in cases of contact dermatitis in farmers, besides antibiotics, vitamins and other feeding additives, sedatives of the phenothiazin-type should not be forgotten.

Hand dermatitis as an unsuspected presentation of textile dye contact sensitivity.

The aim of this study was to evaluate disperse dye sensitization in patients with hand dermatitis. From January 1996 to December 2000, we identified 130 patients with hand dermatitis reacting to one of the 7 dyes included in our standard series. In 82 subjects the dermatitis was localized to the hands alone, whereas 48 patients had lesions both on the hands and on other skin sites. Disperse Blue dyes, and Disperse Orange 3 were the most common sensitizers. Among the 13 subjects allergic to disperse dyes alone, we found 3 cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis, 1 child with atopic de

Epidemiology of nickel allergy: results of a follow-up analysis of patients with positive patch tests to nickel.

In a previous paper, we reported on nickel sensitivity in 2400 consecutive patients in 5 countries. 3 years later, we reassessed 104 of the 157 nickel-positive patients of this former study and found 13 now to be negative to nickel sulphate. Nearly all the others can no longer tolerate nickel contact. 68 patients were free from nickel dermatitis, 16 showed a very mild eczema or dyshidrosis, and 13 were suffering from chronic hand dermatitis. 42 of 104 patients had changed their occupation, 36 successfully, with clearance of skin lesions. Rehabilitation by avoidance of nickel-containing costume

Occupational contact urticaria: Australian data.

BACKGROUND: Over the last 30 years there has been increasing recognition of the clinical entity contact urticaria (CU) and the related diagnosis, protein contact dermatitis. However, there are relatively few reports of the occupational relevance of this condition. OBJECTIVES: To describe relevant characteristics of patients diagnosed with occupational CU (OCU) in a tertiary level specialist occupational dermatology clinic in Australia. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all patients diagnosed with OCU at an occupational dermatology clinic in Melbourne between 1 January 1993 an

[Food allergy as occupational disease].

BACKGROUND: Food-induced allergic reactions not only occur in private settings but also in occupational context. In these cases, the presence of an occupational disease should be investigated. We provide an overview of selected food-associated occupational diseases. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on food-associated occupational dermatoses (contact urticaria, protein contact dermatitis) and occupational food anaphylaxis. RESULTS: Food allergy as an occupational disease is usually manifested as respiratory or cutaneous symptoms, while food anaphylaxis is rarely reported. Employees

Effect of age and sex on the elicitation of irritant contact dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis causes significant disability to numerous consumers and individuals in industry. Knowledge of the prevalence of this disease remains inadequate. Irritant contact dermatitis occurs in workers engaged in occupations where the subjects are exposed to different types and doses of irritants. The intensity of the reaction depends on the quality and the quantity of exposure. Irritant thresholds and dose responses depend on many different factors. This article reviews the clinical and physiological parameters that affect the age and sex related differences in irritant conta
