An infant presented with prolonged fever, generalized lymphadenopathy, splenohepatomegaly, anemia and seborrheic dermatitis. Investigations including bone marrow findings confirmed the diagnosis of hemo-phagocytic syndrome (HPS) and the infant succumbed. Liver biopsy features of epithelioid granuloma and positive AFB culture of gastric aspirate confirmed the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). This rare association of HPS and tuberculosis in infancy is reported.

A review of the spectrum of dermatologic findings related to human immunodeficiency virus infection is presented. Oral candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis, oral hairy leukoplakia, herpes simplex infections and molluscum contagiosum were among the most frequently encountered dermatologic disorders among the HIV-seropositive individuals. The recognition of cutaneous manifestations is of particular importance for the early diagnosis and prognosis of HIV-infection.

BACKGROUND: Dermatologic disease in HIV-infected women has not been adequately characterized.
OBJECTIVE: The main purposes of this study were to characterize nongenital dermatologic disease in HIV-infected women and correlate these diagnoses with CD4 lymphocyte count to compare these findings with those in published reports of men.
METHODS: This study was a retrospective chart review of female patients with dermatologic diagnoses followed up at an HIV clinic in New York City, seen by either a dermatologist (49 patients) and/or a primary care practitioner (114 patients). CD4 lymphocyte count

Seborrheic keratoses (SK) are one of the most common benign tumors of the skin. Studies have suggested that human papillomavirus or a benign clonal proliferation of epidermal cells is involved in the pathogenesis of some SK's, however, this issue remains to be resolved. Pityrosporum ovale has been implicated in the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis, however, its potential role in association with SK's has not been evaluated as evidenced by the fact that there are no publications in the English-language literature regarding this issue. We observed a common occurrence of Pityrosporum organis

BACKGROUND: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection can increase the risk of developing skin disorders. This study evaluated the correlation between HTLV-1 proviral load and CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells count among HTLV-1 infected individuals, with or without skin disorders (SD) associated with HTLV-1 infection [SD-HTLV-1: xerosis/ichthyosis, seborrheic dermatitis or infective dermatitis associated to HTLV-1 (IDH)].
METHODS: A total of 193 HTLV-1-infected subjects underwent an interview, dermatological examination, initial HTLV-1 proviral load assay, CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells c

Dear Editor, Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial mycosis caused by Malassezia species and most often affects the trunk and upper limbs. Flexural or inverse variants, however, may differ markedly from classical morphology due to the influence of moisture, temperature, and friction. These atypical presentations frequently mimic erythrasma, candidal intertrigo, tinea cruris, seborrheic dermatitis, and pigmentary disorders. [...].

Cutaneous flushing and facial erythema are common dermatologic conditions that elicit a wide differential diagnosis that includes rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, photodermatitis, connective-tissue diseases, carcinoid syndrome, and mastocytosis. Herein we present an usual case of a mask-like rosacea-PIPA overlap that occurred in a patient with prior history of rectal carcinoid tumor and a negative systemic evaluation.

HIV and AIDS patients often suffer from various skin infections of viral, bacterial, and fungal origin. In addition, parasitic infestations are prevalent. Common inflammatory dermatoses include seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, photodermatitis, and pruritic papular eruptions. This article discusses some of these conditions with an emphasis on clinical presentation. In patients with pigmented skin, diagnosis maybe challenging and complicated by dyspigmentation.

Melanin-like pigment produced in vitro and in vivo by Malassezia yeasts has not been described before. Masson-Fontana staining confirmed accumulation of black pigment on the cell walls of L-dihydroxyphenylalaline (L-DOPA)-cultured Malassezia species. Black pigment was also observed in cells and hyphae from hyperpigmented patient lesions with culture-confirmed pityriasis versicolor and seborrheic dermatitis.
