A 43 year old female with previously undiagnosed myotonic dystrophy received abdominal hysterectomy under spinal anesthesia. The authors assessed the effects of partial tapering followed by abrupt discontinuation of alprazolam, diazepam, and placebo in 40 patients with panic attacks. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of the anxiogenic neuropeptide diazepam binding inhibitor (DBI) were determined by radioimmunoassay in 281 patients who underwent evaluation for neurological problems. Serial dilution curves and reverse-phase high pressure liquid chromatography showed that the immunoreactive material in CSF behaved just as authentic DBI extracted from human brain. The mice received, 20 min after training, an IP injection of either diazepam (2 mg/kg) or saline; half of the mice in each treatment group were exposed, 40 min after avoidance training (and 20 min after the injections) to a Y maze. A pilot study suggesting the usefulness of intravenous diazepam as an antiemetic for adult patients receiving cis-diamminedichloroplatinum is presented. Observations included 24 patients and 34 courses of therapy. Patients received diazepam and prochlorperazine, and the incidence of vomiting and subjective evaluation of nausea were compared to previous courses of therapy with prochlorperazine alone. A positive response was observed in 87% of the patients. Use of other antiemetics is briefly reviewed.

Twenty-four anxious inpatients were treated with diazepam, amylobarbitone and placebo, each given in flexible dosage for one week, according to a fully-balanced design.
