Preservation of muscle mass assessed by ultrasound during a meal replacement-based hypocaloric intervention in obese individuals: a real-world clinical trial.

Background: meal replacement (MR) diets involve substituting one or more regular meals with specially formulated nutritional products. This 12-week intervention aimed to assess the impact of a hypocaloric meal replacement on body weight and metabolic parameters, emphasizing muscle mass evaluation by ultrasound Methods: a real-world study was conducted using a MR diet protocol, one daily meal was replaced with a nutritional formula. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks, along with ultrasound-based measurements of the rectus femoris and gastrocne

Calorie counting vs. minute counting; does nutrient timing matter for weight-loss?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To critically evaluate the latest evidence on the weight-loss effects of chrono-nutrition, culminating in identification of remaining gaps in the literature and future recommendations. RECENT FINDINGS: There appear to be six articles on this topic published over the past 2 years that have ostensibly examined the weight-loss effects of chrono-nutrition strategies relative to comparator conditions involving standard eating patterns in which meal timing is not manipulated. Some of those studies have concluded that TRE may be superior to standard energy restriction for weight-l

Efficacy, Safety and Acceptability of a Very-Low-Energy Diet in Adolescents with Obesity: A Fast Track to Health Sub-Study.

The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy, safety and acceptability of a 4-week very-low-energy diet (VLED) program for adolescents with obesity. Adolescents (13-17 years) with obesity and ≥1 obesity-related complication were Fast Track to Health 52-week randomized controlled trial participants. Adolescents undertook a 4-week micronutrient-complete VLED (800 kcal/day), with weekly dietitian support. Anthropometric data were recorded at baseline and week-4 and side-effects at day 3-4, week-1, -2, -3 and -4. Adolescents completed an acceptability survey at week-4. A total of 134 adoles

Improved outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis with obesity after a weight loss intervention: randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether a weight loss intervention programme improves RA disease activity and/or musculoskeletal ultrasound synovitis measures in obese RA patients. METHODS: We conducted a proof-of-concept, 12-week, single-blind, randomized controlled trial of obese RA patients (BMI ≥ 30) with 28-joint DAS (DAS28)  ≥ 3.2 and with evidence of power Doppler synovitis. Forty patients were randomized to the diet intervention (n = 20) or control group (n = 20). Diet intervention consisted of a hypocaloric diet of 1000-1500 kcal/day and high protein meal replacements. Co-primary outcomes incl

A Properly Balanced Reduction Diet and/or Supplementation Solve the Problem with the Deficiency of These Vitamins Soluble in Water in Patients with PCOS.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an increasingly common problem for women in the reproductive age throughout the entire world. A reduction diet with a low glycaemic index (GI) has proved to support the treatment of PCOS. The aim of the study was to analyse the influence of the diet on the level of vitamins soluble in water. The study included 55 women, 40 of which suffered from PCOS (identified by means of the Rotterdam Criteria) and 15 healthy women of the Caucasian race. The level of vitamins before and after the dietary intervention was measured. The diet was a reduction diet with a redu

A systematic review of dietary interventions for gestational weight gain and gestational diabetes in overweight and obese pregnant women.

PURPOSE: The number of overweight and obese women is increasing in the obstetric population. The aim of this study was to review studies that reported results related to the efficacy of dietary interventions on gestational weight gain (GWG) or the prevention of gestational diabetes (GDM) in overweight and obese women. METHODS: The search was performed using the CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus and Medic electronic databases and limited to the years between 2000 and March 2016. This systematic review includes 15 research articles of which 12 were randomized controlled trials, and three were controlled t

How dieting makes the lean fatter: from a perspective of body composition autoregulation through adipostats and proteinstats awaiting discovery.

Whether dieting makes people fatter has been a subject of considerable controversy over the past 30 years. More recent analysis of several prospective studies suggest, however, that it is dieting to lose weight in people who are in the healthy normal range of body weight, rather than in those who are overweight or obese, that most strongly and consistently predict future weight gain. This paper analyses the ongoing arguments in the debate about whether repeated dieting to lose weight in normal-weight people represents unsuccessful attempts to counter genetic and familial predispositions to obe

[The study of nickel and chromium contents in dietary supplements supporting slimming].

The market of dietary supplements develops extremely fast in the whole world, also in Poland. A great popularity is ascribed to preparations aiding slimming diet. The application of dietary supplements aimed at reducing body's weight is a result of trends connected with the popularity of a healthy lifestyle and the care about one's appearance. Dietary supplements produced on the basis of natural products frequently contain significant amounts of mineral compounds, including microelements indispensable for man (in strictly specified amounts), among others: nickel and chromium. The subject of th

Mood- and restraint-based antecedents to binge episodes in bulimia nervosa: possible influences of the serotonin system.

BACKGROUND: In bulimic syndromes, binge episodes are thought to be caused by dietary restraint and negative moods. However, as central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT) mechanisms regulate appetite and mood, the 5-HT system could be implicated in diet- and mood-based binge antecedents. METHOD: We used hand-held computers to obtain repeated "online" measurements of eating behaviors, moods, and self-concepts in 21 women with bulimic syndromes, and modeled 5-HT system activity with a measure of platelet [3H]paroxetine-binding density. RESULTS: Mood and self-concept ratings were found to be

Adolescent obesity, a need for greater awareness and improved treatment.

Obesity is arguably the most important medical problem in America today. About 25% of children are considered either overweight or obese, according to newly established national criteria. These teenagers are at significant risk for becoming obese adults, and adolescent obesity predisposes to a range of short- and long-term medical, and psychosocial problems. Despite the enormous medical and economic implications of obesity, effective prevention and treatment strategies are lacking. This review summarizes the epidemiology, evaluation, and management of adolescent obesity, focusing on promising

Validating a multidimensional model of the psychopathology of bulimia nervosa.

In a recent preliminary report, a multidimensional model for bulimia nervosa was proposed with latent dimensions body dissatisfaction, restricting behaviors, bulimic behaviors, and affective and personality disorder. It was suggested that body dissatisfaction clearly represented a distinct dimension of the disorder. In the current investigation, we cross-validated the prior results on a larger sample with a different set of variables and tested the fit against alternative models. Subjects were 497 women diagnosed as having bulimia nervosa. We performed a confirmatory factor analysis using the

Management of obesity--the clinical nutritionist's experience.

Overweight patients are common in veterinary medicine, just as they are in human medicine. Although animals also suffer from diseases in the general categories of cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and digestive diseases, many of the specific problems of obese humans do not afflict obese pets. Of tumors, only adenocarcinoma of the breast is a significant problem in dogs and cats. Moreover, a high intake of dietary fat and table food has been reported to be protective in adult dogs; in women, increasing dietary fat has been associated with increased breast cancer risk. Two experimental studies in
