Monolayer contact doping of silicon surfaces and nanowires using organophosphorus compounds.

Monolayer Contact Doping (MLCD) is a simple method for doping of surfaces and nanostructures(1). MLCD results in the formation of highly controlled, ultra shallow and sharp doping profiles at the nanometer scale. In MLCD process the dopant source is a monolayer containing dopant atoms. In this article a detailed procedure for surface doping of silicon substrate as well as silicon nanowires is demonstrated. Phosphorus dopant source was formed using tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate monolayer on a silicon substrate. This monolayer containing substrate was brought to contact with a pristine intri

Primary hyperparathyroidism: Update on presentation, diagnosis, and management in primary care.

Objective To discuss the presentation, diagnosis, and management of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in family medicine. Quality of evidence MEDLINE was searched from 2002 to 2009 using the terms presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of PHPT. Proceedings and guidelines from the Third International Workshop on Primary Hyperparathyroidism in May 2008 were reviewed in detail. Most studies offered level II and III evidence, although there were a number of single randomized controlled trials on PHPT (level I evidence). References from pertinent papers were also searched for relevant articles. Ar

Pharmacodynamics of bisphosphonates in arthritis.

Inflammatory arthritis is a group of autoimmune diseases characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is associated with local joint destruction and systemic bone loss. Osteoclasts, the only cells of the body able to resorbe bone, are key players in these two types of bone loss. Bisphosphonates are analogs of pyrophosphate that inhibit osteoclast action and bone resorption. They are indicated in pathology associated with excess resorption. Besides their effect on bone they also exhibit extra-osseous properties, acting on tumor ce

Bisphosphonate-associated adverse events.

The adverse events of the nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates are reviewed. Oral bisphosphonates (alendronate, risedronate and ibandronate), mainly used for the treatment of osteoporosis, have been associated with adverse events from the upper gastrointestinal tract, acute phase response, hypocalcaemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism, musculoskeletal pain, osteonecrosis of the jaw and ocular events. Intravenous bisphosphonates (pamidronate, ibandronate and zoledronic acid), used in oncology and for the treatment of osteoporosis, have been associated with all the above adverse events, except

Could local delivery of bisphosphonates be a new therapeutic choice for hemangiomas?

Hemangiomas are endothelial neoplasms that affected about 8-12% of one-year-old children. Their life cycle is characterized by a rapid endothelial proliferation phase, followed by a slow involution phase. About 10% of the hemangiomas will cause functional complications or psychological concern requiring active treatments. Current therapy methods, such as intra-lesional or systemic administration of corticosteroids, systemic interferon treatment, or surgery, are diverse but uncertainty. To date, the etiology of hemangiomas is still controversial. However, general consensus on the importance of

Nephronophthisis-like nephritis associated with fibrous dysplasia of bone.

Nephronophthisis is a chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis with autosomal recessive inheritance whose evolution to end-stage renal disease is insidious but constant. Fibrous dysplasia of bone is characterized by focal replacement of normal bone and marrow with abnormal bone and fibrous tissue. We report on a young boy initially diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia of bone, who underwent renal investigation because of treatment with pamidronate. He presented with mild proteinuria (albuminuria/creatininuria 19 mg/mmol) and decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) (79 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) body surf

Aromatase inhibitor-associated bone loss in breast cancer patients is distinct from postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Women with breast cancer are increasingly being diagnosed and treated earlier in the disease process, resulting in significantly improved clinical outcomes. Aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy has shown superior efficacy compared with tamoxifen in postmenopausal women and is quickly becoming the therapy of choice in this setting. However, adjuvant AI therapy depletes residual estrogen and is associated with rapid bone loss and increased fracture risk distinctly different from those observed in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Aromatase inhibitor-associated bone loss (AIBL) occurs at a rate at least 2

[Osteomyelitis of the jaw in breast cancer patients receiving bisphosphonate therapy].

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a severe new complication in cancer patients with bone metastases receiving bisphosphonate. Currently, there is no effective treatment for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, and the pathogenesis of this complication has not been completely elucidated. It has been shown that a potential risk factor for the complication is dentoalveolar trauma including extraction of teeth during bisphosphonate therapy. Attention should be paid to dental care in patients prior to the initiation of bisphosphonate therapy, and extraction of teeth during bisphosphonate ther

Successful treatment of calciphylaxis with pamidronate.

Calciphylaxis is a rare syndrome characterized by calcification of blood vessels and panniculitis in association with ecchymosis and/or skin necrosis. Most commonly, calciphylaxis is seen in patients with chronic renal failure. In this context, bisphosphonates have been successfully applied in some patients. Here we report on a patient with calciphylaxis of unknown origin treated with pamidronate.

Ibandronate in benign bone disease.

Ibandronate is a potent bisphosphonate which has been most thoroughly assessed in benign bone disease for use in the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Its use in corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis, Paget's disease and uncommon benign bone conditions such as localised transient osteoporosis (or bone marrow oedema syndrome) and sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis has also been explored. Recent randomised controlled trial evidence suggests that intermittent high dosage oral ibandronate may be as efficacious as a daily low dose regime for the treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis, wit

Therapy insight: the risks and benefits of bisphosphonates for the treatment of tumor-induced bone disease.

Bisphosphonates are a valuable class of drugs with potent anti-resorptive actions that make them ideal for skeletal protection in osteoporosis, cancer bone metastasis, multiple myeloma, and Paget's disease of bone. It has become apparent, however, that these drugs also have the potential to cause a number of adverse effects. While these do not limit bisphosphonate use, the incidence of these adverse events can be minimized if appropriate care is taken with their administration, and by maintaining appropriate surveillance and patient care. We review the range of adverse reactions to bisphosphon

[Osteonecrosis of the jaws by using bisphosphonates].

The new generation of bisphosphonates are often used in the treatment of osteoporosis or for certain tumors with bone defects. Between the period of September 2005 and May 2006 we have treated 8 patients at our clinic with a bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis in the maxillofacial region. All of these patients went through intravenous bisphosphonate treatment earlier. We have chosen two cases, where the appearance of side effects can be named as typical. Based upon the increasing number of international articles reporting and our own experiences in this matter, we would like to draw attention

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ): a report of two cases.

Osteonecrosis of thejaw (ONJ) is strongly associated with the use of aminobisphosphonates. Herein, the authors report two cases of ONJ after intravenous bisphosphonate therapy including clinical presentations, X-ray, and pathological findings. Since there is no definite treatment for ONJ, the focus should be on prevention with a dental evaluation for all patients before starting bisphosphonates.

Cancer-related pain and its pharmacologic management in the patient with bone metastasis.

Cancer pain most commonly occurs in patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease. Certain characteristics of cancer-related pain, including its multifocal nature, severity, heterogeneity, progressive nature, and other special challenges, distinguish it from most other types of chronic pain. Bone metastases are the most common cause of pain in patients with malignant disease, in part due to the high frequency of axial (vertebrae, rib, and pelvis) and appendicular (femoral and humeral) fractures. Relief begins with a thorough understanding of the extent of the disease and the risks of as

Pharmacologic management of complex regional pain syndrome.

Few randomized controlled trials of oral pharmacotherapy have been performed in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The prevalence of CRPS is uncertain. Severe and advanced cases of CRPS are easily recognized but difficult to treat and constitute a minority compared with those who meet minimum criteria for the diagnosis. Unsettled disability or liability claims limit pharmaceutical industry interest in the disorder. Many studies are small or anecdotal, or are reported on only via posters at meetings. Targeting the process of bone resorption with bisphosphonate-type compounds s

Bisphosphonates for the prevention and treatment of corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis.

Corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis is a common occurrence among several different patient populations, including individuals undergoing therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, temporal arteritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, chronic lung disease, asthma and organ transplantation. The clinical trial data reviewed here demonstrate that bisphosphonate therapy can reverse, at least in part, established corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis, increase BMD, and prevent the development of new fractures. The consistency of results, with varying treatment regimens and in slightly different patient populations, prov
