Systematic Underreproduction of Time Is Independent of Judgment Certainty.

We recently proposed that systematic underreproduction of time is caused by a general judgment bias towards earlier responses, instead of reflecting a genuine misperception of temporal intervals. Here we tested whether this bias can be explained by the uncertainty associated with temporal judgments. We applied transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to inhibit neuronal processes in the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and tested its effects on time discrimination and reproduction tasks. The results show increased certainty for discriminative time judgments after PPC inhibition. They sugge

Allocentric time-to-contact and the devastating effect of perspective.

With regard to impending object-object collisions, observers may use different sources of information to judge time to contact (tC). We introduced changes of the observer's vantage point to test among three sets of hypotheses: (1) Observers may use a distance-divided-by-velocity algorithm or, alternatively, elaborated τ-formulae, all of which give exact tC information; (2) observers may use simple τ-formulae (i.e., formulae of the type: visual angle divided by its own first temporal derivative); (3) observers may capitalize on non-τ variables. Hypotheses (2) and (3) imply specific patterns of

Stigma, discrimination and medication adherence in schizophrenia: results from the Swedish COAST study.

The aims of this naturalistic non-interventional study were to quantify the level of stigma and discrimination in persons with schizophrenia and to test for potential associations between different types of stigma and adherence to antipsychotics. Antipsychotic medication use was electronically monitored with a Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS®) for 12 months in 111 outpatients with schizophrenia and schizophrenia-like psychosis (DSM-IV). Stigma was assessed at endpoint using the Discrimination and Stigma Scale (DISC). Single DISC items that were most frequently reported included social

Phonological, temporal and spectral processing in vowel length discrimination is impaired in German primary school children with developmental dyslexia.

It is still unclear whether phonological processing deficits are the underlying cause of developmental dyslexia, or rather a consequence of basic auditory processing impairments. To avoid methodological confounds, in the current study the same task and stimuli of comparable complexity were used to investigate both phonological and basic auditory (temporal and spectral) processing in dyslexia. German dyslexic children (Grades 3 and 4) were compared to age- and grade-matched controls in a vowel length discrimination task with three experimental conditions: In a phonological condition, natural vo

Age related changes to perceptual surround suppression of moving stimuli.

Perceptual analogues of centre-surround suppression have been applied as indirect measures of cortical inhibitory function in several clinical disorders. Two tasks have been used: a centre-surround contrast perception task and a motion direction discrimination task, where the stimulus size and contrast is varied to measure surround suppression effects. The tasks are markedly different, yet previous literature implies that both measures indirectly assess inhibitory function and that results will be complementary. This is not the case for age-related effects on surround suppression, however, as

Effects of carpal tunnel syndrome on adaptation of multi-digit forces to object weight for whole-hand manipulation.

The delicate tuning of digit forces to object properties can be disrupted by a number of neurological and musculoskeletal diseases. One such condition is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), a compression neuropathy of the median nerve that causes sensory and motor deficits in a subset of digits in the hand. Whereas the effects of CTS on median nerve physiology are well understood, the extent to which it affects whole-hand manipulation remains to be addressed. CTS affects only the lateral three and a half digits, which raises the question of how the central nervous system integrates sensory feedback

Effects of attention shifts to stationary objects during steady-state smooth pursuit eye movements.

A number of studies have shown that stationary backgrounds compromise smooth pursuit eye movements. It has been suggested that poor attentional selection of the pursuit target was responsible for reductions of pursuit gain. To quantify the detrimental effects of attention, we instructed observers to either pay attention to background objects or to ignore them. The to-be-attended object was indicated by peripheral or central cues. Strong reductions of pursuit gain occurred when the following conditions were met: (a) the subject payed attention to the object (b) a salient event was present, for

Object permanence in lemurs.

Object permanence, the ability to mentally represent objects that have disappeared from view, should be advantageous to animals in their interaction with the natural world. The objective of this study was to examine whether lemurs possess object permanence. Thirteen adult subjects representing four species of diurnal lemur (Eulemur fulvus rufus, Eulemur mongoz, Lemur catta and Hapalemur griseus) were presented with seven standard Piagetian visible and invisible object displacement tests, plus one single visible test where the subject had to wait predetermined times before allowed to search, an

Heterogeneity of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in Croatian war veterans: retrospective study.

AIM: To determine the relationship between the intensity of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the intensity of predominating symptoms. METHOD: The study included 151 veterans from 1992-1995 war in Croatia (aged 38.3+/-7.3 years) with PTSD. The veterans were psychologically tested with the Mississippi Scale for Combat-related PTSD (M-PTSD), Questionnaire on Traumatic Combat and War Experiences (USTBI-M), and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-version 201 (MMPI-201). RESULTS: The discriminative analysis of the data revealed that the group with lower PTSD intensit

Dysfunctional facial emotional expression and comprehension in a patient with corticobasal degeneration.

Patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD) frequently develop orofacial apraxia but little is known about CBD's influence on emotional facial processing. We describe a patient who developed a facial apraxia including an impaired ability to voluntarily generate facial expressions with relative sparing of spontaneous emotional faces. Her ability to interpret the facial expressions of others was also severely impaired. Despite these deficits, the patient had normal affect and normal speech, including expressive and receptive emotional prosody. As patients with corticobasal degeneration are kno

Perirhinal cortex lesions impair simultaneous but not serial feature-positive discrimination learning.

The role of the perirhinal cortex in discriminative eyeblink conditioning was examined by means of feature-positive discrimination procedures with simultaneous (A-/XA+) and serial (A-/X-->A+) stimulus compounds. Lesions of the perirhinal cortex severely impaired acquisition of simultaneous feature-positive discrimination but produced no impairment in serial feature-positive discrimination. The results suggest that the perirhinal cortex plays a role in discriminative eyeblink conditioning by resolving ambiguity in discriminations with overlapping stimulus elements.

The extent of the dorsal extra-striate deficit in amblyopia.

Previously, we have shown that humans with amblyopia exhibit deficits for global motion discrimination that cannot be simply ascribed to a reduction in visibility or contrast sensitivity. Deficits exist in the processing of global motion in the fronto-parallel plane that suggest reduced extra-striate function (i.e., MT) in amblyopia. Here, we ask whether such a deficit also exists for rotation and radial components of optic flow that are first processed at higher sites along the dorsal pathway (i.e., MSTd). We show that similar motion processing deficits occur in our amblyopic group as a whole

"Bothersome blur": a functional unit of blur perception.

Knowledge regarding the amount of blur perceived to be "bothersome" to an individual, namely that which is assumed to be annoying and to adversely affect task performance, remains limited. A Badal optical system was used to measure the blur detection, bothersome blur, and non-resolvable blur dioptric thresholds monocularly either to an isolated 20/50 or 20/200 Snellen E, or to three 20/50 lines of text. Subjects were comprised of 13 visually normal young adults and 3 absolute presbyopes. Cycloplegia was used to paralyze accommodation in the young adults. Within each target type for the young a

Emotion awareness and identification skills in adolescent girls with bulimia nervosa.

This study examined emotion-identification skills in 19 adolescent girls (M age=16 years, 8 months) diagnosed with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed. [DSM-IV], American Psychiatric Association, 1994) diagnosis of bulimia nervosa or eating disorder not otherwise specified in the bulimic spectrum, 19 age-matched girls with a DSM-IV diagnosis of unipolar depression, and 19 age-matched girls without a mental health history. Findings revealed that girls with bulimia nervosa compared to girls in the depressed and community control groups endorsed significantly greater r

When time is up: CNV time course differentiates the roles of the hemispheres in the discrimination of short tone durations.

Numerous studies have suggested that the CNV (contingent negative variation), a negative slow wave developing between a warning and an imperative stimulus, reflects, among other things, temporal processing of the interval between these two stimuli. One aim of the present work was to specify the relationship between CNV activity and the perceived duration. A second aim was to establish if this relationship is the same over the left and right hemispheres. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded for 12 subjects performing a matching-to-sample task in which they had to determine if the durat

Short-lasting impairment of tactile perception by 0.9Hz-rTMS of the sensorimotor cortex.

To test whether low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of sensorimotor cortex (SM1) has prolonged effects on somatosensory function, eight subjects were given 900 TMS pulses over the left hand SM1 (0.9Hz, 90% of the resting motor threshold) or at sites 3 cm anterior or posterior to it. Tactile threshold of the right hand was increased for a short duration after rTMS over SM1, but two-point discrimination and median nerve SEPs were unaffected after rTMS at any sites.

Disabled readers suffer from visual and auditory impairments but not from a specific magnocellular deficit.

The magnocellular theory is a prominent, albeit controversial view asserting that many reading disabled (RD) individuals suffer from a specific impairment within the visual magnocellular pathway. In order to assess the validity of this theory we tested its two basic predictions. The first is that a subpopulation of RD subjects will show impaired performance across a broad range of psychophysical tasks relying on magnocellular functions. The second is that this subpopulation will not be consistently impaired across tasks that do not rely on magnocellular functions. We defined a behavioural crit

Efficient visual search by category: specifying the features that mark the difference between artifacts and animals in preattentive vision.

In this report, we explored the features that support visual search for broadly inclusive natural categories. We used a paradigm in which subjects searched for a randomly selected target from one category (e.g., one of 32 line drawings of artifacts or animals in displays ranging from three to nine items) among a mixed set of distractors from the other. We found that search was surprisingly fast. Target-present slopes for animal targets among artifacts ranged from 10.8 to 16.0 msec/item, and slopes for artifact targets ranged from 5.5 to 6.2 msec/item. Experiments 2-5 tested factors that affect

Perception of voice and tone onset time continua in children with dyslexia with and without attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Tasks assessing perception of a phonemic contrast based on voice onset time (VOT) and a nonspeech analog of a VOT contrast using tone onset time (TOT) were administered to children (ages 7.5 to 15.9 years) identified as having reading disability (RD; n = 21), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 22), comorbid RD and ADHD (n = 26), or no impairment (NI; n = 26). Children with RD, whether they had been identified as having ADHD or not, exhibited reduced perceptual skills on both tasks as indicated by shallower slopes on category labeling functions and reduced accuracy even at the

Acute anosmia in the mouse: behavioral discrimination among the four basic taste substances.

The importance of taste and smell in discrimination of tastes was examined in normal and anosmic mice. We studied the influence of olfaction on taste sensation using behavioral and electrophysiological methods in both normal animals and animals made anosmic mice by destroying their olfactory receptor cells with zinc sulfate (ZnSO(4)) solution. Electrophysiological responses from chorda tympani nerves showed that peripheral taste receptor cells transmitted taste signals normally to the central nervous system, even when the olfactory senses were abnormal. Behavioral observations showed that mice
