Female urethral diverticulum presenting with acute urinary retention: Reporting the largest diverticulum with review of literature.

Female urethral diverticulum is a rare entity with diverse spectrum of clinical manifestations. It is a very rare cause of bladder outlet obstruction and should be considered as a differential diagnosis in females presenting with acute urinary retention associated with a vaginal mass. Strong clinical suspicion combined with thorough physical examination and focused radiological investigations are vital for its diagnosis. Herein we report a case of giant urethral diverticulum presenting with acute urinary retention in a young female. It was managed by excision and urethral closure, and is the l…

Esophageal leiomyoma within an epinephric diverticulum.

Epinephric diverticula are distal esophageal pouches protruding from the epithelial lining of the esophagus while esophageal leiomyomas are … eal wall, with its lumen communicating with the esophageal lumen, likely representing an epinephric diverticulum. Biopsy and immunohistochemistry stains confirmed the diagnosis of smooth muscle neoplasm, likely a leiomyoma. Later, the patient underwent a two-stage esophagectomy. The postoperative biopsy was consistent with the initial one: therefore, supportin …

C5 palsy following esophageal diverticulum resection.

BACKGROUND: C5 palsy (C5P) is a recognized potential postoperative complication of cervical spine surgery but has rarely been reported following an open esophageal diverticulectomy. METHODS: A 61-year-old underwent an open esophageal diverticulectomy for symptomatic Zencker's diverticulum. RESULTS: Postoperatively, she presented with right upper extremity weakness and sensory deficits consistent with a C5P that was later confirmed by electromyography. CONCLUSION: The potential for C5P after esophageal diverticulectomy for symptomatic Zencker's diverticulum is rare. Postoperative recognition…

Large Zenker's Diverticulum: A Case Report.

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is a type of esophageal diverticulum, a relatively rare disease in the pharyngoesophageal area. It is a pulsion diverticulum, or false diverticulum, located dorsally at the wall between the pharynx and esophagus. This area is known as Killian's triangle or dehiscence and is a region of relative weakness. Common symptoms of ZD include dysphagia, choking, persistent cough, loss of weight, hoarseness, halitosis, regurgitation of undigested food, and borborygmi within the cervical region. We are reporting a case of oropharyngeal dysphagia due to a ZD in a 65-year-old man…

Incidental Meckel's Diverticulum With Neuroendocrine Tumor.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD), the most common congenital disease of the small bowel, commonly presents with symptoms of painless rectal bleeding and intestinal obstruction. The treatment of symptomatic MD involves resection of the lesion regardless of patient age; however, the excision of asymptomatic and incidentally identified MDs in adults remain controversial. On one hand, the complications arising from MDs decrease with age, leading to a lower benefit than risk ratio with prophylactic resection. On the other hand, malignancies, such as neuroendocrine tumors, may arise over time from untreat…

Perforated mesenteric Meckel's diverticulum: Case report.

Meckel's diverticulum is a common congenital anomaly found in ∼2% of the population, its classic location aiding in its diagnostic criteria, is the anti-mesenteric side of the distal ileum. However, reported cases of Meckel's diverticula found on the mesenteric side, are present but rare. Here we report a case of a perforated mesenteric Meckel's diverticulum with synchronised anti-mesenteric Meckel's diverticulum, in a 70-year-old male, initially misdiagnosed as left strangulated inguinal hernia. The purpose behind this paper is to raise clinical suspicion regarding this rare pathology, so tha…

Circumferential urethral diverticulum: a surgical conundrum.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Excision of a circumferential diverticulum may be challenging as its extension into the dorsal aspect of the urethra makes access complicated. METHODS: A 69-year-old woman with a history of Stage 3C ovarian cancer on chemotherapy presented with a 3-week history of severe dysuria and suprapubic pain. T2-weighted pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a circumferential diverticulum extending over the dorsal midurethra without evidence of urethral communication. As conservative measures including bladder instillations failed, she underwent surgical excision o…
