Olfaction is essential for the survival of animals. Diverse odor molecules in the environment are detected by the olfactory receptors (ORs) … living environments. For example, higher primates equipped with a well-developed vision system and dolphins that are secondarily adapted to the aquatic life have considerably smaller numbers of OR genes than most of other mammals do. OR genes are characterized by extremely frequent gene duplications and losses. The OR gene repertories are also diverse amo …

Most vertebrates communicate acoustically, but few, among them humans, dolphins and whales, bats, and three orders of birds, learn this trait. FOXP2 is the first gene linked to human speech and has been the target of positive selection during recent primate evolution. To test whether the expression pattern of FOXP2 is consistent with a role in learned vocal communication, we cloned zebra finch FoxP2 and its close relative FoxP1 and compared mRNA and protein distribution in developing and adult brains of a variety of avian vocal learners and non-learners, and a crocodile. We found that the prot…

One of the most common congenital anomalies of the head and neck region is a cleft lip and palate. This retrospective case-control research aimed to compare the maxillary sinus volumes in individuals with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) to a non-cleft control group. The study comprised 72 participants, including 36 patients with BCLP and 36 gender and age-matched control subjects. All topographies were obtained utilizing Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) for diagnostic purposes, and 3D Dolphin software was utilized for sinus segmentation. Volumetric measurements were taken in cubic mi

Since Jane Goodall's famous observations of stick tool use by chimpanzees,1 animal tool use has been observed in numerous species, including many primates, dolphins, and birds. Some animals, such as New Caledonian crows, even craft tools.2,3 Elephants frequently use tools4,5 and also modify them.6 We studied water-hose tool use in Asian zoo elephants. Flexibility, extension, and water flow make hoses exceptionally complex tools. Individual elephants differed markedly in their water-hose handling. Female elephant Mary displayed sophisticated hose-showering behaviors. She showed lateralized hose…

The longstanding idea that the cerebral cortex is the main neural correlate of human cognition can be elaborated by comparative analyses alo … ral adaptations that potentially coevolve with cognitive abilities across other vertebrates such as dolphins, parrots, and elephants. Modular adaptations upon the vertebrate cerebello-cerebral system may thus help better understand the neuroevolutionary trajectory of the primate brain and its relation to cognition in humans. Diving is one of the most important behaviors undertaken by marine mammals. Pilot whales (Globicephala spp.) are oceanic dolphins that regularly forage at extreme depths (∼600-1000 m) and maintain body sizes similar to beaked whales. They are also listed as data deficient, with little known about their population dynamics. To help fill this knowledge gap, we estimated their energetic demands through a combination of multiple data streams (e.g. unoccupied aerial systems photogrammetry, high-resolution accelerometry tag data, stomach content analysis and long-duration dive data from satellite ta…

The mammalian diving response (DR) is a remarkable behavior that was first formally studied by Laurence Irving and Per Scholander in the late 1930s. The DR is called such because it is most prominent in marine mammals such as seals, whales, and dolphins, but nevertheless is found in all mammals studied. It consists generally of breathing cessation (apnea), a dramatic slowing of heart rate (bradycardia), and an increase in peripheral vasoconstriction. The DR is thought to conserve vital oxygen stores and thus maintain life by directing perfusion to the two organs most essential for life-the hea…

Certain members of the morbillivirus genus, canine distemper virus, phocine distemper virus, and the cetacean viruses of dolphins and porpoises exhibit high levels of central nervous system (CNS) infection in their natural hosts. CNS complications are rare for measles virus (MV) and are not associated with rinderpest virus (RPV) and peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infection. However, both RPV and PPRV are neurovirulent in permissive murine strains. Human postmortem tissue, neural cell cultures, and animal models have been used to answer major questions concerning morbillivirus neurovir…

Cetaceans are sentinels of marine ecosystem health and are increasingly exposed to protozoal pathogens. This study investigated the occurrence and molecular identity of Sarcocystidae protozoa in 159 stranded cetaceans representing 21 species along the Brazilian coast. Molecular analysis based on PCR amplification and sequencing of the sarcocystid internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region revealed infections in 14 individuals, showing a clear habitat-associated distribution. Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis neurona were detected in nine coastal cetaceans, consistent with transmission from te

Small pelagic fish play a vital role in pelagic ecosystems and global fisheries, but their aggregative behavior poses challenges for accurate assessments. While the basic functions of schooling-defense, foraging, migrating and mating-are well-documented, the dynamics and variability of these aggregations are less well understood. This study analyzes data from the JUVENA survey (2013-2020) in the Bay of Biscay, examining 54,240 schools from 158 daytime fishing hauls. We analyzed the effect of local biomass fluctuations, dolphin density, planktivorous competition, euphotic zone depth, phytoplank
