Drinking course through midlife based on diagnostic versus quantity-frequency indices.

BACKGROUND: Prior efforts to examine the course of drinking from onset to midlife have been limited to analyses of year-to-year changes in alcohol dependence (AD). The current investigation sought to examine the course of drinking over this time frame using consumption-based measures of drinking and evaluate the degree of comparability in trajectories estimated from diagnostic and quantity-frequency data. METHODS: Participants included 420 men with a lifetime history of AD who were drawn from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry and administered the Lifetime Drinking History, which provided person-y…

Removal of dichloroacetic acid from drinking water by using adsorptive ozonation.

Chloroacetic acids, formed during the disinfection process in potable water production, are considered to pose a potential risk to human health. This article deals with dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) removal from drinking water by using a process of bentonite based adsorptive ozonation. This process is formed by combined addition of ozone, bentonite and Fe(3+). During the reaction, DCAA is removed by the joint effect of adsorption, ozonation and catalytic oxidation. In addition, under the effect of the adsorption, natural organic matters (NOM) can be adsorbed onto the bentonite surface, resulting …

Quantitative and qualitative assessment of university students' definitions of binge drinking.

This study was designed to assess undergraduates' (N = 424) definitions of binge drinking and to evaluate whether the number of drinks they said comprise a binge varied as a function of beverage type, respondent gender, and respondent binge drinking status. When asked to designate the specific number of drinks that comprise a binge for each of four beverage types, students reported that the number of beers constituting a binge was significantly larger than the number of glasses of wine, shots of hard liquor, and servings of any combination of alcoholic beverage types; men reported that a large…

Incidence of sexually transmitted infections among hazardously drinking women after incarceration.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: At the time of incarceration, women have a high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI). In the months after community release, women remain at high risk for new infections. This study assessed the rates and predictors of incident chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis in a sample of hazardously drinking women after incarceration. METHODS: Self-reported behavioral data were collected from 245 incarcerated women. Vaginal swabs were collected at baseline, and 3- and 6-month time points and tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis. Treatment …

Drinking trajectories from adolescence to the fifties among alcohol-dependent men.

OBJECTIVE: Although it has been recognized that the course of alcoholism may differ across individuals, little work has characterized drinking trajectories from drinking onset to midlife. METHOD: The current study examined trajectories of alcohol dependence from adolescence to the mid-50s in a sample of 420 men with a lifetime diagnosis of alcohol dependence. Men from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry were given the Lifetime Drinking History, which assesses the patterns of alcohol consumption and diagnostic symptoms for self-defined drinking phases. Phase data were converted into person-year data…

Periconceptional binge drinking and acculturation among pregnant Latinas in New Mexico.

Binge drinking during pregnancy might lead to the development of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in the offspring. Latinas are often considered a low-risk group for alcohol abuse, although recent reports indicate that the prevalence of alcohol consumption in this group is increasing due to changing cultural norms. The predictors of alcohol consumption during pregnancy among Latinas are largely unknown. We explored predictors of periconceptional drinking among Latinas (n=155) recruited into an ongoing cohort study at the University of New Mexico. Women were interviewed by a bilingual trained i…

[Carcinogenic hazard of chloroform and other drinking water chlorination by-products].

The paper presents the results of studying the carcinogenic effect of chloroform and its combination with carbon tetrachloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, trichloroethylene during chronic oral administration to F1(CBAxC57Bl6) mice. There is a relationship between the manifestation of carcinogenesis to the dose of chloroform and a combination of chemicals, as well as its enhancement upon exposure to the combination as compared with acute administration of chloroform. Exposure to a combination of substances at the level of their maximum permissible concentrations does not affect carcinogenesis. The pos

Alcohol drinking, cognitive functions in older age, predementia, and dementia syndromes.

Among lifestyle-related factors, low to moderate alcohol drinking has been proposed as a protective factor against the development of age-related changes in cognitive function, predementia syndromes, and cognitive decline of degenerative (Alzheimer's disease, AD) or vascular origin (vascular dementia, VaD) in several longitudinal studies, but contrasting findings also exist. Furthermore, many of these studies were limited by cross-sectional design, restriction by age or sex, or incomplete ascertainment. Different outcomes, beverages, drinking patterns, or follow-up periods, or possible interac…

Drinking and condom use: results from an event-based daily diary.

Although it is often assumed that drinking alcohol interferes with condom use, most studies on this topic do not meet the conditions required for causal interpretation. We examined the association of drinking to condom use using data from diaries of alcohol use and sexual encounters, collected over 8 weeks from college students and clients of a sexually transmitted disease clinic. This method establishes the temporal relationships between drinking and condom use and controls for individual differences by using a within-subjects analysis. Multilevel models that predicted condom use from alcohol…

Effects of state coalitions to reduce underage drinking: a national evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Drinking by youth remains prevalent. The Reducing Underage Drinking through coalitions (RUD) project funded ten states for 8 years to form coalitions designed to change the policy and normative environment regarding youth access to alcohol. An independent national outcome evaluation of this $21-million effort was conducted. METHODS: Using a longitudinal quasi-experimental design, the ten intervention states were compared with the other 40 states, with repeated annual measures of outcomes from 1995 to 2004. Measures included print news media coverage, legislative bills enacted, y…

Microbial contamination of drinking water and disease outcomes in developing regions.

Drinking water is a major source of microbial pathogens in developing regions, although poor sanitation and food sources are integral to enteric pathogen exposure. Gastrointestinal disease outcomes are also more severe, due to under-nutrition and lack of intervention strategies in these regions. Poor water quality, sanitation and hygiene account for some 1.7 million deaths a year world-wide (3.1% of all deaths and 3.7% of all DALY's), mainly through infectious diarrhoea. Nine out of 10 such deaths are in children and virtually all of the deaths are in developing countries. Major enteric pathog…

Conditional covariation of binge drinking with predictors of college students' cheating.

Recent research has identified a variety of significant predictors of academic dishonesty, but virtually no studies have examined the conditional relation of binge drinking and students' cheating. Using a survey sample of 289 college students, this study tested the mediating relations of binge drinking with the correlation of independent variables--including opportunity, strain, and self-control--on self-reported academic dishonesty. Low self-control had a stronger correlation with students' cheating behaviors for those who were heavy binge drinkers (beta = -.52) than for students who were non…

Excessive alcohol consumption and drinking expectations among clients in methadone maintenance.

Excessive alcohol consumption and related problems are common among clients in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), yet relatively little is known about the psychological and social determinants of alcohol-related attitudes and behaviors during treatment. This study reports on the prevalence of alcohol dependence, patterns of alcohol consumption and preliminary findings about clients' beliefs that they will change their drinking behavior in the future. Data were gathered from personal interviews with 66 clients attending a MMT program in South London (some 80.5% of the eligible caseload). Fo…

Self-evaluated health status and beer drinking behaviour among South Africans.

A two stage instrumental variables probit model that postulates a simultaneous relationship between an individual's perceived health status and whether or not to drink beer is estimated using data from the South African National Household Survey of Health Inequalities. The results show a statistically significant negative relationship between individual decision to drink beer and health status. Thus, any policies geared at boosting perceived health status are likely to reduce the prevalence of beer drinking. Similarly, any policy interventions that are effective in discouraging beer drinking w…
