In 22 patients who shown filling defects in first and second duodenum, only 2 cases of benign tumors were detected by both radiology and endoscopy; the remaining cases were diagnosed as duodenitis and pseudolesions. In duodenum, the great rarity of benign tumors compared with frequency of pseudolesions doesn't allow evaluation of the accuracy of roentgen examinations. Some principles of differential diagnosis are exposed.

The frequency of duodenal somatostatin cells was assessed and correlated to the number of enterocytes in patients with coeliac disease and in patients with a normal duodenal mucosa. The concentration of somatostatin in the duodenal mucosa was also determined. The number of duodenal somatostatin cells was increased in coeliac disease, whereas the somatostatin concentration did not differ significantly from that of the control patients.

All barium meal examinations performed, in patients aged greater than 65 years, in one year in one Health District are reviewed. There were 39 cases of duodenal diverticula. Based on experience of a pilot series of 100 patients treated by parietal cell vagotomy (PCV) and a prospective clinical comparison between PCV (in some cases with drainage added) and selective gastric vagotomy (SGV) with drainage (D) or antrectomy (A) in some 900 patients, the following conclusions can be drawn: PCV is followed by virtually no sequelae. When drainage is added this is no longer the case and the results are the same as those following SGV + D. PCV and SGV + D show the same recurrence rate at 3 years (approx. 7%). The autors present their experience with nine cases of duodenal obstruction in newborns, admitted to this hospital between Janurary, 1972 and January, 1977. Six babies had duodenal atresia and three had stenosis. Two groups were formed based on the patient's weight: Group one (good prognosis) patients with weight above 2.500 g. A total of 55 patients were treated with the histamine H2-receptor antagonist cimetidine (Tagamet: SKF) in an endoscopically controlled double-blind trial.
