Porcine necrotic ear syndrome is a disease of swine characterized by large erosive lesions at the margin of the pinna(e). The gross and microscopic characteristics of the lesions were studied in 38 pigs selected from eight affected swine herds. The progression of the lesions was examined in a herd of 174 weaned pigs in a total confinement nursery. The lesions began as a superficial vesicular dermatitis associated with superficial auricular trauma and progressed to become exudative and encrusted. A patient with lymphocytic lymphoma involving the middle ear had otalgia and facial palsy as his initial symptoms, and the definitive diagnosis was made by means of biopsy of the tumor in the middle ear. Review of the literature revealed only one other case with clinical involvement of the middle ear space.

Acute hematoma of the ear (cauliflower ear) can be satisfactorily treated with aspiration and the use of the silicone mold to prevent reaccumulation of the blood or serum in the ear. Advantages of the silicone mold over other dressings appears to be ease of application, patient acceptance, and prevention of reoccurrence of reaccumulation of the hematoma.

A comparative study was made on four pairs of temporal bones from patients with Down's syndrome (trisomy 21) and 15 pairs of temporal bones from other infants of the same age range. Spiral reconstructions showed chochlear length to be slightly shorter in temporal bones from patients with Down's syndrome than that in the controls. Based upon these dimensional measurements, a developmental anomaly of the vestibular apparatus was found.

In a case of relapsing polychondritis it was possible to aspirate a collection of subcutaneous fluid from the patient's involved ear. A determination of total hemolytic complement activity of this fluid was low, suggesting that activation of the complement system may have occurred in the course of the patient's disease and might be related to the pathogenesis of this disorder.

The "blue ear drum" generally refers to a condition in which blood or blood products are found in the middle ear. After all possible causes for hemotympanum, including blood dyscrasias and trauma are searched for and ruled out, the patient may have chronic serous otitis media accompanied by bloody effusion.
