The rational treatment of severe microtia or anotia should be to restore not only the form but also the auditory function of the ear. To achieve this aim it is obvious that plastic surgeons must co-operate closely with an otologist: yet this degree of co-operation is seldom seen. This paper describes a two-stage procedure for total ear reconstruction with auditory function. In stage I, a tympanoplasty is performed before transplantation of the carved cartilage framework. Stage II consists of elevation of the reconstructed auricle and transplantation of a full-thickness skin graft to the post-a

Auricular deformity, a common disease of the external ear in China, can be divided into congenital deformity and acquired deformity caused by trauma or ablative origin. Ear reconstruction with autogenous rib cartilage grafts provides consistent emotional relief and psychological benefits due to the repair. However, autogenous reconstruction is complex and challenging, and can be fraught with complications, in addition sometimes it may not be an option for the patients with poor skin cover, severe craniofacial anomalies, those with microtia who have had a failed previous reconstruction and micr

The common experimental use of B16-F10 melanoma cells focuses on exploring their metastatic potential following intravenous injection into mice. In this study, B16-F10 cells are used to develop a primary tumor model by implanting them directly into the ears of C57BL/6J mice. The model represents a reproducible and easily traceable tool for local tumor growth and for making additional in vivo observations, due to the localization of the tumors. This model is relatively simple and involves (i) surgical opening of the ear skin, (ii) removal of a square-piece of cartilage followed by (iii) the imp

BACKGROUND: Suture extrusion has been reported to be the most common complication after cartilage-sparing otoplasty. Several studies have described various designs of postauricular flaps to cover the cartilage sutures and reduce the incidence of suture extrusion.
METHODS: A total of 100 consecutive patients with prominent ears were operated on between January of 2018 and February of 2023 using a deepithelialized postauricular dermofascial flap that is performed as an adjunct to the authors' cartilage-sparing otoplasty technique, which is essentially a combined modified Mustardé and Furnas tec

The Authors present their experience in using bovine cartilage as otological material reconstruction. Cartilage of the ribs is to collect from selected bred cattle and is first placed in an antibiotic solution for 3 days and then in a 70% ethyl alcohol in which it is stored for 20 days before being utilized. One hundred-nineteen cartilage heterografts have been implanted in the middle ear since January 1989. We report the results of 86 cases which were included in a followed study for at least 12 months. Bovine cartilage was used in 47 canal up techniques, 28 canal down techniques and 11 anato

OBJECTIVE: Cartilage is a rigid material that is highly resistant to infection and retraction and is tolerated well by the middle ear. The purpose of this study was to review retrospectively the results of cases of mastoid cavity obliteration with cartilage performed after canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy and to discuss the literature.
METHOD: Of 983 patients who underwent surgery for chronic otitis media between January 2000 and June 2012, 54 patients who underwent CWD mastoidectomy plus mastoid cavity obliteration with cartilage and who were followed up regularly were selected from the d

In very rare cases, acute hearing loss can be caused by a fractured long process of the malleus. Such fractures can be due to head traumas, direct injuries of the tympanic membrane or barotraumas. Clinical findings are: abnormal mobility of the manubrium mallei during the Valsalva maneuvre or pneumomassage of the ear drum, conductive hearing loss, abnormal high compliance in the type A tympanigram. We report on a 48 year old female patient who showed typical symptoms and clinical findings, and discuss possible pathogenic factors. In accordance with the literature, we presume that negative pres

This study analyzes the histomorphology of human stapes footplates, focusing on the footplate (FP), to enhance reconstructive otosurgery. Seven human stapes specimens obtained during pathological dissections were histologically processed. Tissue layer thicknesses (bone and cartilage) were measured at five points in longitudinal sections and three points in cross sections. Additional analyses of surrounding tissue area up to 100 μm from each point were conducted. A total of 1400 individual measurements were included in the analysis of the human FP, comprising 350 measurements each for cartilage

The failure to correctly analyze the complex deformity that comprises the prominent ear is the most common cause of the undesired surgical result. Recognizing conchal hypertrophy as one of the leading causes of the prominent ear deformity has led to a versatile and reproducible otoplasty technique that is easily modified to the common side-to-side variation in deformity. From January of 1993 to August of 2000, chondrocutaneous conchal resection has been used as the cornerstone to a combined sequence of maneuvers in otoplasty. The operation was performed on 47 patients (40 bilateral cases and 7

In cases of microtia with a low hairline, the manner in which hair is removed from the reconstructed auricle must be taken into consideration. This is one of the most common but difficult problems with reconstruction for microtia. The authors describe a new technique that uses a simple regional flap to resolve this problem. The hair-bearing skin in the estimated auricular region and its covering are removed using a local flap from the hairless mastoid region. This is done in the first stage of auricular reconstruction, the costal cartilage grafting is done in the second stage, and elevation of

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection which is especially endemic in the southern parts of Europe, in several regions of Africa, and in South and Central America. Whether treatment is necessary or not depends on the virulence of the germ, the infection's localization, and the host's immunological reaction. Because of the high rate of recidivation and the large number of undesirable side-effects of systemic chemotherapy of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis, several methods of local therapy have been tested. This case report demonstrates one of several approaches to the local treatmen

Auricular chondritis occurred in a patient following a course of auricular acupuncture administered to help the patient give up smoking. Despite immediate treatment the condition pursued a long course resulting in considerable morbidity and some deformity of the ear. Twenty months after presentation the ear is not completely stable. Acupuncture should be considered a form of penetrating trauma which may induce perichondritis or chondritis in the auricle.

Microtia represents a spectrum of maldevelopment of the external ear. Reconstructive techniques may utilize an autogenous rib cartilage framework and require 2-4 stages; alternatively, an alloplastic framework can be used and typically requires 1-2 stages. Successful reconstruction of microtia with either technique can provide a significant quality of life improvement, and both techniques are described in this article.

Chondrodysplasia punctata is a term referring to a clinically heterogeneous group of bone and cartilage dysplasias which cause characteristic epiphyseal stippling. The condition can involve the ear, nose and throat in diverse ways at many levels. We present a case of X-linked brachytelephalangic chondrodysplasia punctata, which illustrates the features of this condition particularly relevant to the audiological physician, otolaryngologist and neonatologist.

BACKGROUND: Ear reconstruction is one of the most complicated and challenging techniques in plastic surgery because of the histologic and anatomic properties of the ear. Success depends on fitting the auriform cartilage scaffold into the overlying skin, but current approaches can just give results that are not lifelike and can lead to complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A novel double-capsule, double-valve plastic ear expander was designed and implanted subcutaneously on either side of the dorsum of six New Zealand white rabbits (two expanders per rabbit). The outer capsule was expanded by
