Validity and reliability of a structured-light 3D scanner and an ultrasound imaging system for measurements of facial skin thickness.

Three-dimensional (3 D)-scanning-based morphological studies of the face are commonly included in various clinical procedures. This study evaluated validity and reliability of a 3 D scanning system by comparing the ultrasound (US) imaging system versus the direct measurement of facial skin. The facial skin thickness at 19 landmarks was measured using the three different methods in 10 embalmed adult Korean cadavers. Skin thickness was first measured using the ultrasound device, then 3 D scanning of the facial skin surface was performed. After the skin on the left half of face was gently dissect

Primary stability in total hip replacement: A biomechanical investigation.

BACKGROUND: In total hip replacement (THR), it is essential to achieve a primary stability to guarantee good long-term results. A novel locking screw hip (LSH)-stem, anchored to the medial cortex of the proximal femur by 5 monocortical locking screws, was developed to overcome the shortcomings of uncemented press-fit and cemented straight stems while simultaneously achieving primary stability. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical competence of the LSH-stem in comparison to an uncemented press-fit stem. METHODS: Six pairs of embalmed human cadaveric femora from donors age

Strength of Syndesmosis Fixation: Two TightRope versus One TightRope with Plate-and-Screw Construct.

Injuries involving the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis can lead to critical destabilization of the ankle mortise. Although specific indications for operative fixation remain unclear, accurate reduction of the syndesmosis has been correlated with the best functional outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the maximum torque and rotation to failure after fixation with a novel construct. Seven pairs (14 ankles) of embalmed cadaveric lower legs, disarticulated at the knee, were obtained. Each pair was randomly assigned to receive either two TightRopes (Arthrex) or a plate-and-screw con

Tensile properties of the transverse carpal ligament and carpal tunnel complex.

BACKGROUND: A new sophisticated method that uses video analysis techniques together with a Maillon Rapide Delta to determine the tensile properties of the transverse carpal ligament-carpal tunnel complex has been developed. METHODS: Six embalmed cadaveric specimens amputated at the mid-forearm and aged (mean (SD)): 82 (6.29) years were tested. The six hands were from three males (four hands) and one female (two hands). Using trigonometry and geometry the elongation and strain of the transverse carpal ligament and carpal arch were calculated. The cross-sectional area of the transverse carpal l

Effect of systematic dental shape modification in bitemarks.

Studies on human cadaver models have reported significant levels of distortion of bitemarks in skin, indicating that tooth characteristics are not reliably transferred and recorded in the bitten subject. Moreover, matches among the anterior biting dentition in open population studies have been found. This prompts the question as to what degree of difference in shape will distinguish one dentition from another as reflected in a bitemark. In order to understand how these variables appear on skin, 10 dental casts with systematic variations in tooth positions were produced. The height of the later

The surgical anatomy of the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve in relation to incisions for anteromedial knee surgery.

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve is a common complication of surgical approaches to the anteromedial side of the knee. A detailed description of the relative anatomic course of the nerve is important to define clinical guidelines and minimize iatrogenic damage during anterior knee surgery. METHODS: In twenty embalmed knees, the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve was dissected. With use of a computer-assisted surgical anatomy mapping tool, safe and risk zones, as well as the location-dependent direction of the nerve, were calculated. RE

Validity of musculoskeletal ultrasound for identification of humeroradial joint chondral lesions: a preliminary investigation.

CONTEXT: Epicondylalgia is a common condition involving pain-generating structures such as tendon, neural, and chondral tissue. The current noninvasive reference standard for identifying chondral lesions is magnetic resonance imaging. Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MUS) may be an inexpensive and effective alternative. OBJECTIVE: To determine the intrarater reliability and validity of MUS for identifying humeroradial joint (HRJ) chondral lesions. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Clinical anatomy research laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-eight embalmed cadavers (14 wome

Cross-sectional analysis of iliopsoas muscle-tendon units at the sites of arthroscopic tenotomies: an anatomic study.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic iliopsoas tenotomies are performed at the level of the labrum, femoral neck, and lesser trochanter. The composition and percentage of the iliopsoas muscle-tendon unit (MTU) that is released when the tendon is cut at these sites has not been reported to date. HYPOTHESIS: Cutting the iliopsoas tendon at the 3 common sites of arthroscopic tenotomies does not release the entire iliopsoas MTU. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: Forty iliopsoas MTUs from 20 embalmed cadavers were isolated at the level of the hip joint and released from their insertion on

Morphometric study of the shoulder and subclavicular innervation by the intermediate and lateral branches of supraclavicular nerves.

BACKGROUND: The supraclavicular (intermediate) and supra-acromial (lateral) branches of supraclavicular nerves contribute to the innervation of the thorax, shoulder, and neck. Despite their clinical and surgical interest, they are not often considered for descriptive anatomy. The goal of this work was to clarify the morphometric knowledge of these two branches and to discuss the clinical relevance of the anatomical features. METHODS: Intermediate and lateral branches of supraclavicular nerves of 14 necks (8 embalmed cadavers) were dissected using magnifying glasses. Macroscopic parameters wer

Extradural extranasal combined transmaxillary transsphenoidal approach to the cavernous sinus: a minimally invasive microsurgical model.

UNLABELLED: The authors have previously described an extradural transmaxillary approach to the anterior compartment of the cavernous sinus. In an effort to expand the surgical access to that area without necessitating a craniotomy or wide transfacial dissection, they present a modification of the transmaxillary approach to the sellar region and cavernous sinus. METHODS: The approach was developed on 12 fresh and 12 embalmed cadaveric specimen, and 2 dry skulls. The initial sublabial incision is followed by a maxillotomy to expose the course of the infraorbital nerve (terminal branch of maxill

The anatomy of the pectoral nerves and their significance in brachial plexus reconstruction.

Twenty-nine brachial plexuses from 13 embalmed and 5 fresh cadavers were examined under x3.5 loupe magnification to collect systematic and topographic anatomical data regarding the lateral and medial pectoral nerves. Additionally, nerve biopsy specimens were harvested in 5 fresh cadavers to obtain histomorphometric data. In all dissections the pectoral nerves exited at the trunk level as 3 distinct nerves. The superior pectoral nerve (from the anterior division of the superior trunk) commences just distal to the suprascapular nerve and courses laterally to innervate the lateral clavicular port

Diagnostic challenges in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: case report.

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is the most common prion disease. The diagnosis can be confirmed only by histological examination of brain tissue obtained at biopsy or at autopsy. Because of the transmissible nature of the disease, autopsy or brain biopsy cannot be performed at many institutions, which poses numerous challenges in confirming the diagnosis. We report the case of a patient with CJD in which autopsy to confirm the diagnosis was performed after overcoming numerous obstacles and advocating with hospital leadership. This case illustrates the numerous challenges that exist i

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous rotator interval approach for simulated adhesiolysis: A proof-of-concept feasibility and anatomical safety study.

BACKGROUND: Several key structures involved in frozen shoulder are located in the anterior shoulder capsule. While ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections and capsular hydrodilatation have demonstrated favorable outcomes through an anterior approach, percutaneous interventions aimed at mechanical adhesion release remain insufficiently investigated. This study evaluated the feasibility and anatomical safety of an ultrasound-guided simulated percutaneous adhesiolysis of the rotator interval in a cadaveric model. METHODS: The procedure was performed in a single non-pathological Thiel-embalme

Unusual and High Origin of Terminal Branches of the Brachial Artery: A Cadaveric Study With Embryological and Clinical Correlations.

BACKGROUND: The brachial artery constitutes the dominant arterial supply of the upper extremity and undergoes terminal division into the radial and ulnar arteries within the cubital fossa at the level of the radial neck. Deviations from this classic bifurcation pattern, whether in its location or configuration, carry substantial implications for both anatomical knowledge and clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: To systematically document and characterize instances of anomalous, proximally displaced terminal branches of the brachial artery observed during routine anatomical dissection and to interpr

Quantitative Analysis of the Radial Nerve Pathway Relative to the Humerus Shaft Length: A Cadaveric Study Aimed at Minimizing Nerve Injury in Fracture Treatment.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to provide a detailed anatomical mapping of the radial nerve's course relative to the humerus and to propose a length-normalized, ratio-based posterior "safe zone" for dual plate fixation in distal shaft fractures to reduce the risk of iatrogenic radial nerve injury. METHODS: We dissected 42 upper arms from 21 embalmed adult cadavers (mean age, 74.1 years) and measured the radial nerve in relation to key humeral landmarks from the posterior aspect. Two orthopedic surgeons performed 2 trials each, and intra- and interobserver reliability were high with Cro

Observations on Two Previously Unreported Anatomical Factors Relating to the Esophagogastric Junction.

The esophagogastric junction (EGJ) is the anatomical zone where the esophagus ends and the stomach begins. Its competence in preventing gastro-esophageal reflux has been shown to depend on a number of factors which have been extensively investigated and widely accepted. This study describes two previously unreported features that show anatomical variation around the EGJ: (1) posterior pericardio-esophageal (PE) attachment, and (2) posterior location of the gastric fundus relative to the intra-abdominal esophagus. Measurements and observations were made on 60 formalin-embalmed full-body cadaver
