Cognitive styles in depressed children with and without comorbid conduct disorder.

Little is known about patterns of cognitive impairment in depression comorbid with conduct disorder. The study included clinically depressed children with (N = 23) or without conduct disorder (N = 29), and controls without psychiatric disorder (N = 37). Cognitive biases typical of depression and patterns of social information processing were assessed. Both depressed groups had substantially higher rates of negative cognitive distortions, attributional biases and ruminative responses than non-depressed children. Children in the comorbid group made more hostile attributions and suggested more ag

Emotion regulation in first episode adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: what difference does a year make?

We examined the roles of cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, and rumination in first episode non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents, and the impact of age-related differences in emotion regulation use. Adverse life events and psychological distress played a significant role in NSSI onset. Being male and less use of cognitive reappraisal contributed to NSSI risk but only in regard to 12-month incidence; this effect was not observed when predicting 24-month incidence. Neither expressive suppression nor rumination was related to NSSI onset in our sample. Age-related differen

Face perception in children with autism and Asperger's syndrome.

Children with diagnoses of either autism or Asperger's syndrome were matched on measures of verbal mental age with nonautistic control children. They were tested on their abilities to process both facial and nonfacial stimuli. There were no significant differences between the low ability autistic and control groups, but the high ability autistic and Asperger's children performed significantly worse than controls across all tests. Group averages masked substantial individual variation. The results are seen as indicating a general perceptual deficit that is not specific to faces or emotions. Thi

Emotion regulation and amygdala-precuneus connectivity: Focusing on attentional deployment.

Attentional deployment is an emotion regulation strategy that involves shifting attentional focus. Deploying attention to non-arousing, compared to arousing, regions of unpleasant images has been associated with reduced negative affect, reduced amygdala activation, and increased activity in fronto-parietal control networks. The current study examined neural correlates and functional connectivity associated with using attentional deployment to increase negative affect (deploying attention towards arousing unpleasant information) or to decrease negative affect (deploying attention away from arou

The effects of AI-collaborative translation workshop on translation competence and learner engagement: an empirical study in a Chinese university translation course.

As artificial intelligence (AI) is integrated into translation pedagogy, it brings new possibilities for competence development. However, concerns also emerge regarding learner engagement and maintenance of human agency. This study investigates the effects of an AI-Collaborative Translation Workshop on translation major students' learner engagement and translation competence with a mixed-methods approach. 69 undergraduate translation-major students participated in a 16-week quasi-experimental design. The experimental group (n = 35) attended a structured AI-collaborative workflow, while the con

Design Methodology for a Backrest-Lifting Nursing Bed Based on Dual-Channel Behavior-Emotion Data Fusion and Biomechanical Simulation: A Human-Centered and Data-Driven Optimization Approach.

Population aging and rising rehabilitation demands highlight the need for advanced assistive devices to improve mobility in individuals with motor impairments. Existing back-support lifting nursing beds often lack adequate human-machine adaptability, safety, and emotional consideration. This study presents a human-centered, data-driven optimization pipeline that integrates behavior-emotion dual recognition, simulation verification, and parameter optimization with user demand mining, biomechanical simulation, and sustainable practices. The design utilizes GreenAI, focusing on low-power algorith

From multimodal features to behavioural inferences: A pipeline to model engagement in human-robot interactions.

Modelling the engaging behaviour of humans using multimodal data collected during human-robot interactions has attracted much research interest. Most methods that have been proposed previously predict engaging behaviour directly from multimodal features, and do not incorporate personality inferences or any theories of interpersonal behaviour in human-human interactions. This work investigates whether personality inferences and attributes from interpersonal theories of behaviour (like attitude and emotion) further augment the modelling of engaging behaviour. We present a novel pipeline to model

Paradoxical facilitation of working memory after basolateral amygdala damage.

Working memory is a vital cognitive capacity without which meaningful thinking and logical reasoning would be impossible. Working memory is integrally dependent upon prefrontal cortex and it has been suggested that voluntary control of working memory, enabling sustained emotion inhibition, was the crucial step in the evolution of modern humans. Consistent with this, recent fMRI studies suggest that working memory performance depends upon the capacity of prefrontal cortex to suppress bottom-up amygdala signals during emotional arousal. However fMRI is not well-suited to definitively resolve que

Emotion and self-cutting: narratives of service users referred to a personality disorder service.

Theory and existing research suggest that emotion regulation capabilities develop during the formative years. Emotion dysregulation is associated with psychological distress and may contribute towards difficulties such as personality disorder and self-harm. This study aimed to explore the contexts in which individuals' narratives of emotional experience and self-harm developed. Eight participants who cut themselves and were seen by a personality disorder service were recruited. Semi-structured interviews were carried out, and interview transcripts were analysed using a narrative approach. Five

Development and validation of the Korean version of the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test.

The Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing the ability to recognize emotion. To examine the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the RMET and to explore the possible implications of poor performance on this task, 200 adults aged 19-32 years completed the RMET and the Korean version of the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20K), the cognitive empathy domain of the Korean version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI-C), and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory-Aggression (BDHI-A). Anxious attachment and excessive acquisition: The mediating roles of anthropomorphism and distress intolerance.

Background and aims Most individuals with hoarding disorder (HD) are prone to excessively acquiring new possessions. Understanding the factors that contribute to this collecting behavior will allow us to develop better treatment approaches for HD. The aim of this study was to test our assumption that an anxious attachment style is associated with a tendency to anthropomorphize comforting objects and an inability to tolerate distress, which in turn leads to excessive acquisition. Methods A total of 361 participants with subclinical to clinical acquisition problems (77.8% female) completed a ser

The impact of winning and losing on family interactions: a biological approach to family therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the connection between winning and losing and family functioning. We do this by hypothesizing a link between successful outcomes in individual competition and in functional family interaction. This enables us to show how therapeutic interventions can be directed toward the attachment system, by lowering anxiety and fostering mutual trust, and toward the social rank system, by promoting success and feelings of empowerment. METHOD: A search of online databases was conducted with key search terms related to winning and losing, and their effects on attachment patterns and fa

[Psychological adjustment of children with phenylketonuria].

INTRODUCTION: Phenylketonuria is an inherited disorder, which prevents the normal use of protein food and causes changes in body chemistry, which, if left uncontrolled can lead to severe learning disabilities. By following a strict low protein diet early from birth phenylketonuria children can avoid mental retardation, other somatic as well as psychiatric disorders. However, early treated children with phenylketonuria are found to have more emotional and behavioral problems. Because of the lack of correlation between elevated phenylalanine (Phe) levels and psychological adjustment recent studi
