Surgical hypoparathyroidism is a severe complication of the operations on thyroid gland. Hundred thirty patients aged between 17 and 77 years have been analysed clinically. Group I involved 45 patients with surgical hypoparathyroidism of transient or partial character, group II involved 85 patients with severe irreversible surgical hypoparathyroidism. Hypocalcemia in postoperative period was significantly higher in group II than that in group I (p < 0.02), and negatively correlated with the maximal dose of vitamin D3 necessary to compensate calcemia (r = -0.42). Follow-up results indicate that

The purpose of this study was to determine trends and differences between various medical specialties with regard to the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The method used was a cross-sectional survey, and the authors' sample was composed of 116 physicians. There was an overall lack of consensus on choice of treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Treatment varies with the individual physician without any strict adherence to a formal therapeutic protocol. Calcium was the treatment modality most widely used by all the specialties. Gynecologists and endocrinologists show the greatest u…

SUMMARY: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a known risk factor for dyslipidaemias. Insulin resistance and the associated dyslipidaemia, particularly hypertriglyceridaemia, have been less frequently linked to peripheral nerve dysfunction, including small fibre sensory neuropathy. The relationship between metabolic disturbances, such as hypertriglyceridaemia, and neuropathy warrants further exploration and has gained increasing recognition in recent studies. This case highlights the potential neurological consequences of lipid abnormalities in women with a history of GDM. A 38-year-old woma

INTRODUCTION: The worldwide prevalence of celiac disease (CD) is ~1% of the population. In Chile, the National Health Survey 2009-2010 showe … increasing overweight from 23.1% to 34.6% and obesity from 0 to 7.7%.
CONCLUSIONS: In Con cepción, endocrinologists conduct a significant and successful active search of CD, being responsible for 47.3% of the diagnoses. The high proportion of overweight/obese patients is consistent with the phenomenon currently described in Chile and other countries.

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a common, genetically determined lipoprotein that is independently associated with myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral artery disease, and calcific aortic stenosis. Because Lp(a) levels are stable over time and minimally influenced by lifestyle, the 2026 ACC/AHA/Multisociety Dyslipidemia Guideline now recommends one-time measurement in all adults and cascade screening in high-risk families; as a result, endocrinologists can expect to encounter and manage elevated Lp(a) frequently in routine clinical practice. Despite its clinical importance, no approved drug the…

Cyclic Cushing syndrome (CCS) is characterized by unpredictable, intermittent phases of excess cortisol, alternating with periods of normal or subnormal adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol levels. The mechanism is unclear. Due to its rarity and diverse clinical presentation, unpredictable phases, and various etiologies, CCS poses significant diagnostic and management challenges for endocrinologists. The authors describe 3 cases in which each patient's initial presentation was a life-threatening hypercortisolemic phase that lasted from 4 days to 3 months, followed by spontaneous res…

Carcinoid syndrome (CS) is a rare condition associated with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), particularly those originating in the gastrointestinal tract, which secrete bioactive substances like serotonin. The management of CS requires a multidisciplinary approach due to its complex clinical manifestations, including flushing, diarrhea, bronchospasm, and carcinoid heart disease. Optimal care involves collaboration between several professional figures like oncologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons, and dietitians. Currently, a wide range of treatments are available, focused on b…

Dopamine agonists are a key tool in the therapeutic arsenal of endocrinologists worldwide. They exert their effects by binding to dopamine-2 (D2) receptors expressed by pituitary tumour cells to modulate hormonal secretion and tumour size. They are the established first-line treatment for prolactinomas which express high levels of D2 receptors. Growing data support their use as an adjuvant treatment option for other pituitary tumours including growth hormone, adrenocorticotrophic hormones, thyroid hormone secreting adenomas and nonfunctional pituitary tumours, all of which have been shown to e…

Phaeochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) release catecholamines leading to catecholamine-induced hypertensive (CIH) crises, with blood pressure greater than or equal to 180/120 mm Hg. CIH crises can be complicated by tachyarrhythmias, hypotension, or life-threatening target organ damage while treatment remains undefined, often requiring co-management between endocrinologists and cardiologists. Furthermore, biochemical diagnosis of a PPGL as a cause of a CIH crisis can be difficult to identify or confounded by comorbid conditions, potentially resulting in misdiagnosis. Here, we combine rel…
