The aims of this thesis were to study longitudinally the tooth mortality, prevalence and technical standard of endodontic treatment as well as the endodontic treatment need in a Swedish population. Furthermore, the prevalences of teeth with crowns and posts were studied as well as the prevalence of apical periodontitis in such teeth, to see if these treatments affected the apical status. Chronic apical periodontitis is diagnosed primarily by radiography. An in vitro method for the cytotoxicity testing of endodontic materials is described which aims to simulate the clinical situation. Materials can be tested in the presence or absence of a compacted layer of dentine chips mimicking the periapical dentine plug. A total of twelve materials were tested. A survey was completed to determine and to evaluate the reason for endodontic treatment performed by endodontic residents at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland at Baltimore. On the basis of patient data and the reasons for endodontic treatment, as stated by the treating residents, the results showed that necrotic pulp and irreversible pulpitis were the most frequent reasons for endodontic therapy. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the fracture resistance and microleakage of direct composite endocrowns, indirect composite endocrowns, and fiber-reinforced indirect composite endocrown restorations placed on endodontically treated mandibular molars with extensive coronal loss in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-eight mandibular molars were endodontically treated and randomly divided into three groups (n = 26): Group 1—direct composite endocrown restorations, Group 2—indirect composite endocrown restorations, and Group 3—fiber-reinforced indirect composite endocrown restorations.
