Kinetics and thermodynamics of interfacial transfer.

The kinetic barrier against the transport of methyl and ethyl nicotinates across the water-isopropyl myristate interface has been studied as a function of temperature using a rotating diffusion cell. The temperature dependence of the interfacial transfer kinetics has enabled calculation of the thermodynamic parameters for the process. It is evident from the results that, for the transferring solutes considered, the activation energy barrier is enthalpic, because there is a large positive entropy for transfer into the interfacial region.

Relative stability of intercalation against surface adsorption in van der Waals materials and a predictive descriptor.

The layered structure of van der Waals (vdW) materials is expected to enable efficient ion intercalation, making them potentially valuable for applications in the energy storage field. In order to understand the interaction mechanism of intercalation atoms in the vdW materials, we investigate the surface adsorption and interlayer intercalation behaviors of alkali metal (IA), alkaline earth metal (IIA), and halogen (VIIA) atoms in three representative vdW materials, namely insulating h-BN, gapless graphene, and semiconducting 2H-MoS2, using density functional theory with vdW corrections. Light-harvesting by antenna-containing rhodopsins in pelagic Asgard archaea

Aquatic bacterial rhodopsin proton pumps have been recently reported to utilize hydroxylated carotenoids1,2. Here, by combining a marine chromophore extract with purified archaeal rhodopsins identified in marine metagenomes, we report on light energy transfer from diverse hydroxylated carotenoids (lutein, diatoxanthin, and fucoxanthin) to heimdallarchaeial rhodopsins (HeimdallRs)3,4 from uncultured marine planktonic members of the 'Ca. Kariarchaeaceae' ('Ca. Asgardarchaeota')5. These light-harvesting antennas absorb in the blue-light range and transfer energy to the green-light absorbing retin…

Direct Determination of Electron-Transfer Properties of Dicopper-Bound Reduced Dioxygen Species by a Cryo-Spectroelectrochemical Approach.

Direct experimental determination of redox properties of superoxo (O2.- ) and peroxo (O22- ) embedded in dicopper complexes bearing an unsymmetrical binucleating ligand was achieved using cryo-electrochemistry and cryo-spectroelectrochemistry in dichloromethane. Cyclic voltammetry for dicopper(I) (1+ ) oxidation to a CuI CuII mixed-valent species (12+ ) under inert atmosphere at 193 K reveals slow heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics, indicative of a large reorganization energy. Oxygenation of the dicuprous complex 1+ gives the bridged peroxo dicopper(II) species 3+ , which is reversibly o

Semiconductor quantum dot-inorganic nanotube hybrids.

A synthetic route for preparation of inorganic WS(2) nanotube (INT)-colloidal semiconductor quantum dot (QD) hybrid structures is developed, and transient carrier dynamics on these hybrids are studied via transient photoluminescence spectroscopy utilizing several different types of QDs. Measurements reveal efficient resonant energy transfer from the QDs to the INT upon photoexcitation, provided that the QD emission is at a higher energy than the INT direct gap. Charge transfer in the hybrid system, characterized using QDs with band gaps below the INT direct gap, is found to be absent. This is …

Signal transmission between subunits in the hemoglobin T-state.

To study allosteric mechanism in hemoglobin, a hydrogen-exchange method was used to measure ligand-dependent changes in structural free ener … ligands occupy the alpha-chain hemes or the beta-chain hemes. Control experiments rule out modes of energy transfer other than programmed cross-subunit interaction within the T-state. Cross-subunit transfer may depend on pulling the heme trigger (moving the heme iron into the heme plane) rather than on liganding alone.

Enhancing anaerobic digestion via synergistic integration of bioelectrochemical stimulation and conductive nanoparticles-mediated electron transfer.

The integration of electrically conductive materials and bioelectrochemical systems (BES) offers a promising approach to enhance anaerobic digestion (AD) by promoting extracellular electron transfer and stabilizing syntrophic interactions involved in methanogenesis. This study evaluated the combined effect of electrode polarization and magnetite nanoparticles (1 g L-1) on sewage sludge AD using two identical bioelectrochemical reactors operated under either applied voltage (0.8 V) or open-circuit potential (OCP) conditions. Under polarized conditions, magnetite supplementation significantly en

Reaction mechanism of the ethynylation of formaldehyde on copper terminated Cu2O(100) surfaces: a DFT study.

1,4-Butanediol (BDO) is an important chemical raw material for a series of high-value-added products. And the ethynylation of formaldehyde is the key step for the production of BDO by the Reppe process. However, little work has been done to reveal the reaction mechanism. In this work, the reaction mechanism for the ethynylation of formaldehyde process on copper-terminated Cu2O(100) surfaces was investigated with density functional theory (DFT). The reaction network of the ethynylation of formaldehyde was constructed first and the adsorption properties of the related species were calculated. Th

A High-Energy Four-Electron Zinc Battery Enabled by Evoking Full Electrochemical Activity in Copper Sulfide Electrode.

The growing global demand for sustainable and cost-effective energy storage solutions has driven the rapid development of zinc batteries. Despite significant progress in recent years, enhancing the energy density of zinc batteries remains a crucial research focus. One prevalent strategy involves the development of high-capacity and/or high-voltage cathode materials. CuS, a commonly used electrode material, exhibits a two-electron transfer mechanism; however, the reduced sulfion lacks electrochemical activity and thereby limits its discharge capacity and redox potential. In this study, we activ

Engineering responsive polymer building blocks with host-guest molecular recognition for functional applications.

CONSPECTUS: All living organisms and soft matter are intrinsically responsive and adaptive to external stimuli. Inspired by this fact, tremendous effort aiming to emulate subtle responsive features exhibited by nature has spurred the invention of a diverse range of responsive polymeric materials. Conventional stimuli-responsive polymers are constructed via covalent bonds and can undergo reversible or irreversible changes in chemical structures, physicochemical properties, or both in response to a variety of external stimuli. They have been imparted with a variety of emerging applications inclu

Elucidation of complex triplet excited state dynamics in Pd(II) biladiene tetrapyrroles.

Pd(II) biladienes have been developed over the last five years as non-aromatic oligotetrapyrrole complexes that support a rich triplet photochemistry. In this work, we have undertaken the first detailed photophysical interrogation of three homologous Pd(II) biladienes bearing different combinations of methyl- and phenyl-substituents on the frameworks' sp3-hybridized meso-carbon (i.e., the 10-position of the biladiene framework). These experiments have revealed unexpected excited-state dynamics that are dependent on the wavelength of light used to excite the biladiene. More specifically, transi

Spin device-based image edge detection architecture for neuromorphic computing.

Artificial intelligence and deep learning today are utilized for several applications namely image processing, smart surveillance, edge computing, and so on. The hardware implementation of such applications has been a matter of concern due to huge area and energy requirements. The concept of computing in-memory and the use of non-volatile memory (NVM) devices have paved a path for resource-efficient hardware implementation. We propose a dual-level spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memory (SOT-DLC MRAM) based crossbar array design for image edge detection. The presented in-memory edge de

Vibrational relaxation pathways of AI and AII modes in N-methylacetamide clusters.

We studied the pathways of vibrational energy relaxation of the amide I (~1660 cm⁻¹) and amide II (~1560 cm⁻¹) vibrational modes of N-methylacetamide (NMA) in CCl₄ solution using two-color femtosecond vibrational spectroscopy. We measured the transient spectral dynamics upon excitation of each of these amide modes. The results show that there is no energy transfer between the amide I (AI) and amide II (AII) modes. Instead we find that the vibrational energy is transferred on a picosecond time scale to a common combination tone of lower-frequency modes. By use of polarization-resolved femtoseco…

Energy level alignment at planar organic heterojunctions: influence of contact doping and molecular orientation.

Planar organic heterojunctions are widely used in photovoltaic cells, light-emitting diodes, and bilayer field-effect transistors. The energy level alignment in the devices plays an important role in obtaining the aspired gap arrangement. Additionally, the π-orbital overlap between the involved molecules defines e.g. the charge-separation efficiency in solar cells due to charge-transfer effects. To account for both aspects, direct/inverse photoemission spectroscopy and near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy were used to determine the energy level landscape and the molecular ori

The Effects of Negative Pressure Induced by Flow Separation Vortices on Vocal Fold Dynamics during Voice Production.

This study used a two-dimensional flow-structure-interaction computer model to investigate the effects of flow-separation-vortex-induced negative pressure on vocal fold vibration and flow dynamics during vocal fold vibration. The study found that negative pressure induced by flow separation vortices enhances vocal fold vibration by increasing aeroelastic energy transfer during vibration. The result showed that the intraglottal pressure was predominantly negative after flow separation before gradually recovering to zero at the glottis exit. When the negative pressure was removed, the vibration …

Structure-dependent nanobubble dynamics in multi-nanoparticle systems.

HYPOTHESIS: The spatial distribution of nanoparticles is hypothesized to be a critical, tunable parameter governing nanobubble dynamics and interfacial heat transfer. We propose that multi-nanoparticle systems, unlike isolated particles that were the focus of prior studies, can leverage collective effects to lower the energy barrier for nucleation, modulate nanobubble growth, and delay structural failure, thereby offering a pathway to optimize thermal processes in nanomedicine and nanoscale energy transfer. SIMULATION METHOD: Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate this hy…
