[Distribution of intestinal parasites detected in Camlihemşin healthcare center during the period from July 2005 to January 2007].

In the present study, 142 persons admitted to the Camlihemşin Healthcare Center between July 2005 and January 2007, carriage of intestinal parasites was investigated in 93 male and 49 female patients. All of the stool samples were examined by using native-lugol technique. Cellophane tape method was applied to the 0-19 age group. Parasite cysts and/or eggs were found in total of 17,6 % of the patients. Of the patients carrying parasites, 64% (16/25) was female, and 36% (9/25) was male. Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histo-lytica/dispar and Enterobius vermicularis were respectively detected as

Recombination does not generate pinworm susceptibility during experimental crosses between two mouse subspecies.

The susceptibility to Aspiculuris tetraptera of European Mus musculus hybrids is thought to reflect the disruption of genomic co-adaptation through recombination of the parental genomes. Here, we compared the susceptibility to this parasite between parents and experimental hybrids (intersubspecific until F4, intrasubspecific F1, F2) to clarify the contributions of heterosis and subspecies incompatibility. F1 showed hybrid vigor. Unlike intrasubspecific F2, intersubspecific F2 were less resistant than F1, but revealed no increased susceptibility relative to the parents. Intersubspecific F3 and

[Dynamics of intestinal parasitic diseases in children admitted to the TB Preventorium in Gorneşti, Mureş county].

This study follows the evolution of the intestinal parasitic infections during a 5 year period between 2000-2004, detected at the inhabitants of the TBC Preventorium Gornesti from Mureş county. The 127 children included in the study are aged between 3 and 16 year, they attend a special kindergarten and a special school. The most important species of parasites found were Giardia lamblia, Ascaris lumbricoides, Hymenolepis nana and Trichuris trichiura. Most of the infected children had mono-parasitosis, only a few showed poly-parasitic infections with 2 parasites. In spite of the adequate treatme

Enterobius vermicularis and allergic conditions in Norwegian children.

Studies investigating the association between Enterobius vermicularis and allergic conditions have shown conflicting results. This study was conducted to test for any such associations in Norwegian children. Parents were asked to answer questionnaires concerning their children's history of allergies, wheezing or eczema and pinworm infections. Current pinworm infections were diagnosed by microscopic examination of anal scotch tape samples. The data were analysed using logistic regression. Atopic eczema, allergy or wheezing was reported to be confirmed by a physician in 23% of the children (84/3

Prevalence of intestinal parasite infections among individuals with mental retardation in New York State.

The prevalence of intestinal parasite infection among program participants of the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for the period 1986-1987 was estimated, and demographic factors associated with increased risk for infection were identified. The overall prevalence of infection was 7.3%. The two most prevalent infections were Enterobius vermicularis (4.5%) and strongyloides stercoralis (1.2%). Males and individuals with severe or profound mental retardation were twice as likely to be positive for the presence of intestinal parasites as females and indivi

Enterobius vermicularis: a possible cause of symptoms resembling appendicitis.

The role of Enterobius vermicularis in appendicitis has been disputed. The aims of this retrospective study were to determine the prevalence of E. vermicularis in surgically removed appendices and to relate this to the age and sex of the patient, the time of the year, the presence of symptoms and the histological findings. The study included all appendices received in this laboratory during the 5 year period from 1984 through to 1988. There were 1867 appendices during this period of which 1108 were acutely inflamed and 759 were not inflamed (although 149 of these showed other pathological chan

Unexpected findings after surgery for suspected appendicitis rarely change treatment in pediatric patients; Results from a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: To determine if non-operative treatment is safe in children with acute appendicitis, we evaluated the incidence of unexpected findings after an appendectomy in children, and the influence they have on subsequent treatment. METHODS: A historical cohort study (January 2004-December 2014) was performed including children, aged 0-17 years, who underwent an appendectomy for the suspicion of acute appendicitis. Patients were divided based upon histopathological examination. Unexpected findings were reviewed, as well as the subsequent treatment plan. RESULTS: In total 484 patients were

Parasitological stool examination from children without the typical symptoms of parasitic disease.

Most parasitic intestinal infestations in humans are sub-clinical and, therefore, they are rarely diagnosed. A number of general, non-specific symptoms of parasitic invasions are often attributed to other diseases. A parasitological examination of feces performed as part of this study confirmed the presence of intestinal parasites in 21.6% of samples. Among the patients who reported 6 different symptoms, the percentage of parasite-positive samples reached 80%. The obtained results suggest that coproscopic tests may establish the diagnosis in unclear cases, particularly in children. Many parasi

Vulvovaginitis in childhood.

Symptoms related to vulvitis and vulvovaginitis are a frequent complaint in the paediatric age. Knowledge of the risk factors and the pathogenetic mechanisms, combined with thorough clinical examination, helps to distinguish between dermatological diseases, non-specific vulvitis and vulvovaginitis proper. On the basis of microbiological data, the most common pathogens prove to be Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae and Enterobius vermicularis; fungal and viral infections are less frequent. The possibility of isolating opportunistic pathogens should also be considered. In rare situat

Echinococcosis granulosus in stray dogs and Echino-IHAT in the hunters in Cairo, Egypt.

A total of fifty stray dogs of both sex and of different ages were examined for natural infection with Echinococcus granulosus after post-mortem. Three main intestinal helminthes were recovered. These were in descending order of abundance Dipylidium caninum, Toxocara canis and E. granulosus. The latter worm was demonstrated in eight of them (16%). The sera of three out of 21 dog-hunters (14.3%) showed positive Echino-IHAT. Two of the hunters suffered Enterobius vermicularis and one of them had Taenia saginata as well. But, the abdominal X-ray of the two hunters was more or less normal and did

Pregnancy outcome after gestational exposure to mebendazole: a prospective controlled cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Mebendazole is an anthelmintic that is commonly needed in women of reproductive age. Its use in pregnancy is a reason for concern for women and their health care providers. The purpose of this study was to examine the fetal safety of mebendazole. STUDY DESIGN: The Israeli Teratogen Information Service prospectively collected and followed 192 pregnancies exposed to mebendazole in pregnancy, 71.5% of whom had first-trimester exposure. Pregnancy outcome was compared with that of a matched control group, who were counseled for nonteratogenic exposure. RESULTS: There was no increase in

Unexpected causes of gynecological pelvic pain.

During our day-to-day practice, we, as clinicians, occasionally come across patients whose symptomatology is atypical. In major teaching hospitals, it is usually easy to consult with other specialists to optimize patient management and standard of care. Our study patients were treated by the authors between January 1998 and January 2003. In this article, the authors report on 6 different cases of unexpected causes of pelvic pain, all of which were managed in a general gynecological unit at a major tertiary referral institution.
