The virulence of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli isolated from various water sources was compared with that of clinical strains by in vitro assays of adhesion, invasion and cytotoxicity to HeLa cells. Variation in degree of attachment was observed, but this did not appear to be related to strain source, However, water strains were less invasive and less cytotoxic to HeLa cells than clinical strains as shown by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. In a house to house study of leprosy cases at Jaipur (148) a majority (91) had NL leprosy, 50 had LL leprosy and remaining 7 had indeterminate leprosy. More cases (84.5%) had a poor housing, overcrowding, low socioeconomic status. Out of 59 persons giving history of contact a majority had it at home and others at work places. The period of contact was more than five years in 74.6% cases. Most of the cases had lesions on exposed or easily accessible parts of the body.

The frequency of cirrhoses drastically increased in the seventies. This increase was predominantly due to an augmentation of alcoholic cirrhosis in men. Cirrhosis is significantly more wide-spread in men than in women. Most of the cirrhoses in women are of unknown origin. Morphologically, the alcoholic cirrhoses are of the micronodular types in their great majority. Combined with HBsAg positivity, the macronodular type is most frequent. The classification in micro- and macronodular cirrhoses do not imply a different etiology but it may indicate different stages in cirrhosis of identic origin.

Data on exposure of 10,879 pregnant women to various household and agricultural chemicals were obtained by interview; 6,267 of these women were seen both antenatally and postnatally, enabling a genuine prospective study of the association between chemical exposure and congenital abnormalities in the infant. The remaining 4,612 women were privately booked and were first seen postnatally. Statistical analysis of the 2 groups revealed a strong association of malformations with chemical exposure in both groups, even after other known risk factors were taken into account.

A house-to-house survey for scabies was done in a semiurban area with a population of 1727 from 273 families in 253 households, to study the sociocultural and environmental factors in families with scabies.
