Herd immunity and the HIV epidemic.

Background. Herd immunity describes the collective immunocompetence of a population and its ability to resist disease. The diseases of mycobacteria, salmonella, hepatitis A, cryptosporidia, syphilis, measles, influenza, and numerous others recently have been seen in epidemic proportions in the United States. An association between these superimposed secondary infections and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic can be made since the HIV's imposition on individual immunity has ramifications on a population level through a decline in herd immunity. Conclusion. Exploring these epidemic

The AIDS epidemic: profiles of development.

As all HIV-infected subjects become virus carriers, the epidemic will not attain a "steady state" until the number of deletions (from death and other factors) equals or outnumbers that of new cases, i.e. each HIV-infected subject transmits the infection to only one subject in the course of his lifespan. A full stop of all spreading of HIV will most likely require worldwide vaccination. By simple mathematical models it is shown that calculation of the number of HIV infected individuals based on the number of AIDS cases is very uncertain. The ratio of HIV infected subjects to AIDS cases is great

[Epidemic parotitis and Reiter's syndrome].

A case of epidemic parotiditis in an adult male affected by Reiter's syndrome, is presented. The symptoms of Reiter's syndrome lasting 3 months after the recovery from epidemic parotiditis. Although descriptions of Reiter's syndrome of viral origin (adenovirus or hepatitis virus) exist, we have not found references of a relation to epidemic parotiditis. The diagnosis criteria of this syndrome is discussed, as well as the study of the epidemic parotiditis. We review the existing theories in order to justify the multiple etiology of this interesting syndrome.

Malignant melanoma--profile of an epidemic.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma is occurring in epidemic proportions in the United States. To provide a profile of persons at risk and the epidemiologic features of malignant melanoma, we reviewed the records of 325 patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma seen at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center between 1973 and 1983. Most patients had fair skin, brown or blonde hair, blue or green eyes, and had difficulty in suntanning. The majority of melanomas (72%) developed in preexisting nevi. In women, melanomas were most common on the extremities, and in men they occurred most frequent

[Structure of the dermo-epidemic junction].

The basement membranes are extracellular proteic matrixes involved mainly in cell-substrate interactions. The dermo-epidermal junction (DEJ) is defined as the region formed by the dermal pole of the basal cell layer, the intercellular spaces, the lamina densa or basal lamina and the acellular fibrous components of the papillary dermis. The functions of the DEJ are to bind the epithelia to the connective tissue, and to preserve the viability of the epidermis by means of connecting it to the dermis. which is in charge of providing the necessary nutrients for its normal proliferation. The purpose

A plague epidemic in voluntary quarantine.

In September 1665, an outbreak of plague occurred in Eyam, a small village 10 miles west of Sheffield, in an isolated valley of Derbyshire. Eighty per cent of the population died during the 14 months of the epidemic, a greater proportion than any other community in England. When plague threatened to cause panic and desertion of the village, the vicar of Eyam persuaded the villagers to stay, and to impose a voluntary quarantine on their village, in order to avoid spreading the plague to the surrounding villages. Quarantine was strictly observed for the last five months of the epidemic, when it

[Considerations on the complications of epidemic parotitis].

The AA describe 82 cases of complications occurred during an outbreak of mumps in 1980-81. Forty-two cases of meningitis, 4 of pancreatitis, 2 of orchitis and 2 cases of encefalitis occurred. All patients had eventual, complete recovery. The other cases are not specific complications. The treatment was almost entirely symptomatic. The headache of meningitis was relieved by a lumbar poncture. In the epicrisis of the AA these cases of complications have some importance in relation to the opportunity of getting herd vaccination against mumps.
