A 2026 update on myelodysplastic neoplasms: current state, challenges and future directions.

Myelodysplastic neoplasms, also known as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), are a heterogeneous group of myeloid malignancies characterized by ineffective haematopoiesis, cytopenias and a variably increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukaemia. MDS primarily affect older adults with a median age at diagnosis of 76 years among patients in the USA. Despite major advances in our understanding of the genetic landscape and pathophysiology of MDS over the past 20 years, few disease-modifying therapies have been approved. Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation remains the only po

Emerging Links Between PFAS Exposure and Autoimmune Thyroid Disease: A Narrative Review of Epidemiologic Evidence, Mechanistic Insights, and Research Gaps.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent synthetic chemicals widely distributed in the environment and human tissues. Known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, PFAS are increasingly investigated for their potential role in the rising global prevalence of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. This narrative review synthesizes epidemiologic evidence and mechanistic insights to clarify this relationship. Epidemiologic findings remain heterogeneous; while some studies link PFOA and PFOS exposure to altered circulating thyroid horm

Cross-sectional evaluation of anthropometric measures vs MRI-measured visceral and hepatic fat in a Canadian cohort.

CONTEXT: Accurate assessment of excess body fat and its cardiometabolic risk is essential in clinical and epidemiologic research. Body-mass index (BMI), although widely used, does not capture visceral or ectopic fat. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how anthropometric measures-BMI, percent body fat, waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)-relate to MRI-measured visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and hepatic fat fraction (HFF), overall, and by sex. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis within the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Heart and Minds cohort. SETTING: Community-based, pan-Canadian prospect

Phosphorus Intake and Cancer Risk: A Theoretical-Conceptual Model and Hypothesis for Population-Study Replication.

Recent findings in nutritional epidemiology report an association between high dietary phosphorus intake and increased cancer risk. Building on the author's analysis of breast cancer incidence in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), this paper presents a theoretical-conceptual model and a hypothesis to guide further population-study replication. To strengthen the initial SWAN analysis signal, a sensitivity analysis increased the number of controls in the nested case-control design from four to five per case. This adjustment modestly raised the relative risk (RR) of breast canc

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances During Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes: The Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may increase the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), with adverse consequences for pregnant women and their offspring. However, epidemiologic studies have shown inconsistent results. We addressed this question in a large, pooled sample of U.S. women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants (n = 5,229) from 16 cohorts had singleton pregnancies. PFAS were quantified in a single plasma or serum sample during pregnancy (1999-2021); six PFAS detected in ≥60% of participants were analyzed. The primary outcome was GDM diagn

The Association Between Ambient Temperature and Snakebite in Georgia, USA: A Case-Crossover Study.

The World Health Organization has identified snakebite envenoming as a highest priority neglected tropical disease, yet there is a dearth of epidemiologic research on environmental risk factors, including outdoor temperature. Temperature may affect snakebites through human behavior or snake behavior; snakes are ectotherms, meaning outdoor temperatures influence their internal body temperature and thus their behavior. Here we investigate the relationship between short-term temperature and snakebites in Georgia, one of the most biodiverse US states in terms of herpetofauna. We acquired emergency

Dual Trajectories of Dementia and Social Support in the Mexican-Origin Population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In the next few decades, the number of Mexican American older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders will increase dramatically. Given that this population underutilizes formal care services, the degree of care responsibilities in Mexican American families is likely to increase at the same time. However, little is known about the changing need for assistance with instrumental day-to-day activities and emotional support by long-term patterns of cognitive impairment. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We use 7 waves of the Hispanic Established Populations for
