Applying local epidemiological data to national policy - the case study of the epidemiology of wrist and hand injury in Jerusalem.

Recently, Luria et al. (2019) published a paper in The Israeli Journal for Health Policy Research describing the epidemiology of wrist and hand injuries in two hospitals in Jerusalem. In this important paper, the authors were able to identify two subpopulations at higher than average risk for such injuries. It should be noted that local epidemiological findings could differ from findings for regional, national and international settings. Therefore, it is important to explore the extent to which these findings can be further generalized to other contexts, especially when considering health polic

Epidemiological study of hantavirus in Southern Brazil, 2009-2019.

Brazil has the highest number of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome cases on the American continent, with Santa Catarina being the state with the most notifications. This retrospective longitudinal study aimed to describe the epidemiological profile of 177 hantavirus cases reported in Santa Catarina from 2009 to 2019, using data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). Statistical analyses of socio-demographic, clinical, and epidemiological data revealed that the typical patient was a male of working age with low educational attainment, living in a rural area. The highest inci

[Epidemiological studies of the association between dyslipidemia and Alzheimer's disease].

Alzheimer's disease (AD), as the representative type of dementia among neurodegenerative diseases, has become a major challenge in the field of global public health. Dyslipidemia is considered an acquired risk factor for AD, and both are progressive diseases with long developmental periods, making dyslipidemia a potential predictor of future AD occurrence. Therefore, preventing dyslipidemia is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of AD. Given the global epidemiological background of AD, this article aims to systematically review the association between dyslipidemia and AD, pr

Agreement between spirometric quality reviewers in an epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVE: . Spirometry is the gold standard among pulmonary function tests, with acceptability criteria established to ensure reliable results. However, variability in the interpretation of spirometry by trained reviewers remains unexplored. This study assessed agreement among trained reviewers regarding spirometric acceptability and its components, including the number of acceptable maneuvers, predominant defect, and repeatability. METHODS: . Spirometries from 3,982 adults (≥40 years) participating in an epidemiological study across six cities in Argentina were independently reviewed by jun

Sero-epidemiological studies of pathogen burden: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Methodological advances in serological testing have made it feasible to quantify antibodies to multiple pathogens simultaneously. This has been used to study the impact of pathogen burden, i.e., cumulative lifetime exposure to persistent pathogens, on health and mortality outcomes. However, definitions for pathogen burden using serological data vary considerably. It is unclear how to best combine serological data for multiple pathogens for exposure/outcome definitions in epidemiological studies. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we conducted a scoping review of all relevan

Splenic Lesions in Dogs: A Retrospective Epidemiological and Pathological Study.

Splenic neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions are frequently diagnosed in dogs and often exhibit overlapping clinical signs and gross morphological features, rendering histopathological examination essential for definitive diagnosis, therapeutic planning, and prognostic assessment. In Colombia, epidemiological data regarding these lesions remain limited, whereas international studies report considerable heterogeneity in the relative frequencies of neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological spectrum of splenic lesions in dogs and provide upd
