Is endemic stability of tick-borne disease in cattle a useful concept?

Endemic stability is a widely used term in the epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne diseases. It is generally accepted to refer to a state of a host-tick-pathogen interaction in which there is a high level of challenge of calves by infected ticks, absence of clinical disease in calves despite infection, and a high level of immunity in adult cattle with consequent low incidence of clinical disease. Although endemic stability is a valid epidemiological concept, the modelling studies that underpinned subsequent studies on the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases were specific to a single host-tick

Radiomics analysis to predict pulmonary nodule malignancy using machine learning approaches.

BACKGROUND: Low-dose CT screening can reduce lung cancer-related mortality. However, most screen-detected pulmonary abnormalities do not develop into cancer and it often remains challenging to identify malignant nodules, particularly among indeterminate nodules. We aimed to develop and assess prediction models based on radiological features to discriminate between benign and malignant pulmonary lesions detected on a baseline screen. METHODS: Using four international lung cancer screening studies, we extracted 2060 radiomic features for each of 16 797 nodules (513 malignant) among 6865 partici

Associations of C-reactive protein and psychological distress are modified by antidepressants, supporting an inflammatory depression subtype: Findings from UKHLS.

BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence increasingly suggests inflammation may be important specifically for an etiologically distinct depression subtype, characterised by resistance to antidepressant medication. However, epidemiological investigations of the relationship of inflammation with depression and psychological distress have failed to acknowledge these developments, which may have resulted in bias or masking of associations driven by the subtype. This may have contributed to inconsistent results in epidemiological studies, and equivocal support for an inflammation-depression link. METHODS: An

The Impact of Vacations on the Transmission Dynamics of Influenza A (H1N1).

The 2009 influenza A (H1N1) epidemic in China provided a unique natural experiment to evaluate school closures, as it overlapped with two school vacations. Utilizing the epidemiological data from this outbreak, our study specifically assesses the impact of holidays and systematically evaluates the efficacy of school-specific prevention measures in curbing influenza transmission. By using the enhanced piecewise linear representation model and calculating the effective reproduction number Rt, we divided the entire pandemic period into six stages. We employed the Susceptible-Exposed-Infective-Rem

Tracking Dynamics of Superspreading Through Contacts, Exposures, and Transmissions in Edge-Based Network Epidemics.

Infectious disease superspreading caused by heterogeneity in contact behavior has been observed to be an important determinant of epidemic dynamics and size in both empirical and theoretical settings. However, it has also been observed that the importance of this type of superspreading changes throughout an epidemic, generally in a decreasing manner as infections cascade from individuals with many contacts to those with fewer contacts. We provide an exact mathematical formulation of this phenomenon in strongly-immunizing (SIR) epidemics on static contact networks. Building on the edge-based mo

Multivariable Behavioral Change Modeling of Epidemics in the Presence of Undetected Infections.

Epidemic models are invaluable tools to understand and implement strategies to control the spread of infectious diseases, as well as to inform public health policies and resource allocation. However, current modeling approaches have limitations that reduce their practical utility, such as the exclusion of human behavioral change in response to the epidemic or ignoring the presence of undetected infectious individuals in the population. These limitations became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring the need for more accurate and informative models. To address these cha

Multi-Compartmental Staged Progression Endemic Models with Fast Transitions.

We present a model of infectious disease dynamics where individuals can transition between different compartments, which may have distinct epidemiological characteristics. Within each compartment, epidemic dynamics are represented by a staged progression epidemic model. Individual transitions between compartments occur on a faster time scale, allowing the initial model to be reduced for analysis. In the reduced model, disease eradication and endemicity are characterized by the basic reproduction number. The relationship between this basic reproduction number and those associated with each comp

Evaluating the Intensity of a Potential Yellow Fever Outbreak During an International Trading Event: a Case Study on Canton Fair.

We evaluate the risk of yellow fever outbreaks in a major trade event, with a case study of Canton Fair (Guangzhou, China), caused by case importation at different stages of the trade event. Our baseline model is a standard vector-borne disease transmission dynamics system, but we incorporate the division of a calendar year into favorable and unfavorable seasons based on impacts of different climatic conditions (temperature in particular) on mosquito population dynamics. We also incorporate square-waves to describe scenarios of case importation. We then use this periodic switching model to inf

The changing epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2.

We have come a long way since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic-from hoarding toilet paper and wiping down groceries to sending our children back to school and vaccinating billions. Over this period, the global community of epidemiologists and evolutionary biologists has also come a long way in understanding the complex and changing dynamics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. In this Review, we retrace our steps through the questions that this community faced as the pandemic unfolded. We focus on the key roles that mathematical mod

ICRP Publication 115. Lung cancer risk from radon and progeny and statement on radon.

Recent epidemiological studies of the association between lung cancer and exposure to radon and its decay products are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to pooled case-control studies of residential exposures, and to cohorts of underground miners exposed to relatively low levels of radon. The residential and miner epidemiological studies provide consistent estimates of the risk of lung cancer, with significant associations observed at average annual concentrations of approximately 200 Bq/m³ and cumulative occupational levels of approximately 50 working level months (WLM), respectively. A disease-agnostic approach to ensemble learning for infectious disease forecasting.

Accurate forecasting of infectious diseases drives modern public health interventions that reduce morbidity and mortality. However, accurate forecasting in real-time remains a challenge for the modeling community. Ensembling has emerged as a critical tool for accurate forecasting by leveraging multiple component (individual) models into a single weighted average. Traditional ensembling strategies have relied on bespoke component models that weight the contributions of individual models according to extensive historical data for specific diseases. This is impractical for an emerging disease, si

Targeting Lipid Metabolism for the Treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Insights from Preclinical Mouse Models.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major leading cause of irreversible visual impairment in the world with limited therapeutic interventions. Histological, biochemical, genetic, and epidemiological studies strongly implicate dysregulated lipid metabolism in the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) in AMD pathobiology. However, effective therapies targeting lipid metabolism still need to be identified and developed for this blinding disease. To test lipid metabolism-targeting therapies, preclinical AMD mouse models are needed to establish therapeutic efficacy and the role of lipid metabo

Review of fractional epidemic models.

The global impact of corona virus (COVID-19) has been profound, and the public health threat it represents is the most serious seen in a respiratory virus since the 1918 influenza A(H1N1) pandemic. In this paper, we have focused on reviewing the results of epidemiological modelling especially the fractional epidemic model and summarized different types of fractional epidemic models including fractional Susceptible-Infective-Recovered (SIR), Susceptible-Exposed-Infective-Recovered (SEIR), Susceptible-Exposed-Infective-Asymptomatic-Recovered (SEIAR) models and so on. Furthermore, we propose a ge

Nonlinear parametric quantile models.

Quantile regression is widely used to estimate conditional quantiles of an outcome variable of interest given covariates. This method can estimate one quantile at a time without imposing any constraints on the quantile process other than the linear combination of covariates and parameters specified by the regression model. While this is a flexible modeling tool, it generally yields erratic estimates of conditional quantiles and regression coefficients. Recently, parametric models for the regression coefficients have been proposed that can help balance bias and sampling variability. So far, how

Algorithm-Defined Muscle Dysmorphia Estimates Across Weighting and Case-Definition Strategies in a Gender-Balanced Adult Online Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological evidence on muscle dysmorphia (MD) remains limited, and self-report algorithm-defined estimates may depend on sampling and case definitions. We examined how algorithm-defined MD estimates and exploratory correlates varied across weighting and case-definition scenarios in a gender-balanced German online sample. METHOD: In this cross-sectional web-based study, 1468 adults from Germany completed self-report measures: 739 (50.3%) men, 706 (48.1%) women, 21 (1.4%) nonbinary/diverse participants, and 2 (0.1%) who preferred not to disclose their gender. An improved inverse method for estimating disease transmission rates in epidemics with low-incidence data.

The accurate estimation of time-varying transmission rates is fundamental for understanding infectious disease dynamics and implementing effective public health interventions. To this end, we propose an improved inverse method for estimating time-varying transmission rates in low-incidence settings, where conventional data pre-processing approaches often fail owing to sparse-case observations. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce an exponential B-spline interpolation approach that integrates both continuous and discrete inverse methods. In addition, we incorporate a non-standard finite-di

A review of ecotoxicity and developmental toxicity of disinfection byproducts (DBPs): Are aromatic DBPs more toxic than aliphatic DBPs?

Aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were suggested to exhibit greater ecotoxicity and developmental toxicity than regulated DBPs. However, a systematic comparison of ecotoxicity/developmental toxicity between aromatic and aliphatic DBPs remains lacking. Herein, we aim to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the ecotoxicity and developmental toxicity of DBPs by analyzing epidemiological evidence, aquatic toxicity data (EC50), TIC-Tox calculations, and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modelling. Epidemiological evidence suggests that DBP exposures are associated with low

Measuring resistant-genotype transmission of malaria parasites: challenges and prospects.

Increased gametocytemia in infections with resistant strains of Plasmodium species and their enhanced transmissibility are a matter of concern in planning and evaluating the impact of malaria control strategies. Various studies have determined weekly gametocyte carriage in response to antimalarial drugs in clinical trials. The advent of molecular biology techniques makes it easy to detect and quantify gametocytes, the stages responsible for transmission, and to detect resistant genotypes of the parasite. With the validation of molecular markers of resistance to certain antimalarial drugs, ther
