Erythema multiforme. Clinical characteristics and natural history in fifty patients.

Erythema multiforme is a chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disease with a variable recurrent pattern. Thirty female and twenty male patients, ranging in age from 11 to 75 years, were studied. Twelve patients had oral lesions only, nineteen had oral and lip changes, and nineteen had oral, lip, and skin involvements. Most of the patients had a noncyclical pattern of attacks which required systemic corticosteroid therapy. When the disease attacks electively were not treated, healing would vary between 2 and 24 weeks. This study confirmed the idiopathic nature and extremely variable features of e…

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection-associated erythema multiforme in a Maltese dog.

An 8-year-old spayed female Maltese dog was referred with a 4-month history of multifocal pruritic erosive or ulcerative lesions on the head … e skin lesions, histological characteristics, and response to therapy, the dog was presumed to have erythema multiforme induced by P. aeruginosa infection. This case report emphasizes that P. aeruginosa infection could be a trigger of erythema multiforme in dogs. Key clinical message: Erythema multiforme caused by infection is rare and poorly characterized in the vet …

Urethral Complications Due to Erythema Multiforme Major: A Case Report.

Erythema multiforme major (EMM) is an acute, immune-mediated mucocutaneous disease that rarely affects the genital mucosal surfaces. This study describes a 39-year-old male with this rare disease and unusual presentation. The patient presented to an emergency department with oral lesions, drainage from both eyes, injected sclera, and characteristic targetoid lesions on the face, upper extremities, torso, and plantar surfaces of the feet. Laboratory results indicated a latent herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection and an active Mycoplasma pneumonia infection. The patient later developed …

Reality of drug-induced erythema multiforme: A French pharmacovigilance study.

BACKGROUND: Since the 2002 SCAR study, erythema multiforme (EM), a post-infectious disease, has been distinguished from Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), drug-induced. Nevertheless, EM cases are still reported in the French pharmacovigilance database (FPDB). OBJECTIVES: To describe EM reported in the FPDB and to compare the quality and the characteristics of the reports. METHODS: This retrospective observational study selected all EM cases reported in the FPDB over two periods: period 1 (P1, 2008-2009) and period 2 (P2, 2018-2019). Inclusion criteria were 1) a diagnosis of clinically typical E…

Occurrence of erythema multiforme following COVID-19 vaccination: a review.

The fast development of vaccines against the novel coronavirus disease is among the most critical steps taken to control this potentially fatal viral disease. Like other vaccines, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines can also cause unwanted reactions. Erythema multiforme (EM) is among the oral mucocutaneous side effects of COVID-19 vaccines. This study aimed to comprehensively review the reported cases of EM since the global onset of COVID-19 vaccination. Data from 31 relevant studies regarding the type and dose of COVID-19 vaccines administered, time of initiation of symptoms, age…

Antinuclear Antibodies in Erythema Multiforme: Transient Occurrence During Acute Illness.

BACKGROUND: Children with target lesions are frequently diagnosed with erythema multiforme (EM). EM was not previously thought to be associated with any specific autoimmune serological abnormality. METHODS: We report the case of a 7-year-old girl who developed rashes all over her body with target shaped lesions. Based on clinical appearance and medical history, she was diagnosed with severe erythema multiforme and treated with methylprednisolone. Relevant laboratory tests were performed at admission. RESULTS: At the height of her infection, the antinuclear antibody (ANA) test showed a positi…

First Report of Erythema Multiforme Minor Caused by Raloxifene Hydrochloride.

Raloxifene is a drug used in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Although hot flashes are known side effects of raloxifene, to the best of our knowledge, erythema multiforme (EM) minor has not been previously reported. Herein, we report about a 74-year-old woman who developed EM minor after the drug alfacalcidol was changed to raloxifene to treat osteoporosis. Skin biopsy revealed a suspicious eczematous drug reaction. The drug-induced lymphocyte stimulation test showed a positive result. The stimulation index was 2.2, and there were no other suspected drugs. Based on these results, we dia…

Erythema Multiforme-Like Presentation in an Asymptomatic COVID-19 Patient.

In clinical practice, there are a lot of variations in disease manifestations. Diseases are constantly evolving, and one negative test cannot completely rule out a disease. Erythema multiforme (EM) is a common mucocutaneous disease that can be linked to a lot of etiologies, with the most common being herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and the use of various drugs. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a new virus, and traditionally it is not the first differential for EM eruptions. We report the case of a 52-year-old female patient with a…
