Relationship Between Exercise Tolerance and Event-Related Potentials on Recovery in Adults with Postconcussion Syndrome.

From the diagnosis and management through to determining recovery, the clinical pathway for concussions and postconcussion syndrome (PCS) is reliant on symptom reporting. Under-reporting or over-reporting bias necessitates the need for more objective measures. Exercise intolerance has shown to be a strong predictor of adolescent concussion patients likely to have protracted recoveries. Its role in predicting outcomes for adults is less clear. In addition to physiological measures, event-related potentials (ERPs) have demonstrated altered cognitive processing across the concussion recovery stag

Emotional Influences on Cognitive Processing in Fibromyalgia Patients With Different Depression Levels: An Event-related Potential Study.

OBJECTIVES: Comorbid symptoms in fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome, such as mood disorders and cognitive dysfunction, may lead to greater functional impairment than pain itself. This study aimed to unravel the modulating role of depression in response execution and inhibition in FM using an emotional go/no-go task. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 17 FM patients with low depression, 18 FM patients with high depression, and 18 pain-free controls were included. Pain, happy, and neutral faces were pseudorandomly presented, and participants were asked to respond to male faces (go trials) by pressing a b

Somatosensory Gating of Pneumatic Stimuli in Adults with Chronic Tic Disorder.

Individuals with chronic tic disorder (CTD) frequently report sensory over-responsivity, defined as heightened awareness of and/or behavioral reactivity to stimuli that are non-aversive to most neurotypical individuals. Within CTD populations, sensory over-responsivity is associated with severity of tics and co-occurring psychiatric symptoms. Despite its prevalence and association with core facets of the phenotype, the neurobiological basis of sensory over-responsivity in CTD remains unclear. Sensory gating, the physiological process of filtering out repetitive stimuli in early perceptual stag

Effects of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation at the Cerebellum on Working Memory.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a widely used brain intervention technique in clinical settings. In recent years, the role of the cerebellum in learning and memory has become one of the hotspots in the field of cognitive neuroscience. In this study, we recruited 36 healthy college or graduate students as subjects and divided them into groups, with 10 to 14 subjects in each group. We performed 5 Hz and 20 Hz repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation and sham stimulation on the Crus II subregion of the cerebellum in different groups, then let them complete the 2-back working memory task be

Auditory hallucinations and the P3a: attention-switching to speech in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In line with emerging research strategies focusing on specific symptoms rather than global syndromes in psychiatric disorders, we examined the functional neural correlates of auditory verbal hallucinations (AHs) in schizophrenia. Recent neuroimaging and behavioural evidence suggest altered early cognitive processes may be seen in patients with AH as a result of limited processing resources. METHODS: The P3a subcomponent of the P300, an event-related potential (ERP) index of early attention switching, was assessed in 12 hallucinating patients (HP), 12 non-hallucinating patients (NP

Low-level defective processing of non-verbal sounds in dyslexic children.

We compared processing of non-verbal auditory stimuli by dyslexic and non-dyslexic children using electrophysiological methods. The study included 39 children (17 with dyslexia plus 22 controls) assessed via frontal, central, parietal, and temporal electrodes. As an extension of previous P300 event-related potential studies, we analysed variations in the power values of 40-Hz oscillations (gamma-band oscillations involved in cognitive processing) during a specific time window in response to the auditory 'oddball' paradigm that entail target (random 2 kHz) and standard (frequent 1 kHz) stimuli.

QTLs identified for P3 amplitude in a non-clinical sample: importance of neurodevelopmental and neurotransmitter genes.

BACKGROUND: The P3(00) event-related potential is an index of processing capacity (P3 amplitude) and stimulus evaluation (P3 latency) as well as a phenotypic marker of various forms of psychopathology where P3 abnormalities have been reported. METHODS: A genome-wide linkage scan of 400-761 autosomal markers, at an average spacing of 5-10 centimorgans (cM), was completed in 647 twins/siblings (306 families mostly comprising dizygotic twins), mean age 16.3, range 15.4-20.1 years, for whom P3 amplitude and latency data were available. RESULTS: Significant linkage for P3 amplitude was observed o

rTMS neuromodulation improves electrocortical functional measures of information processing and behavioral responses in autism.

OBJECTIVES: Reports in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) of a minicolumnopathy with consequent deficits of lateral inhibition help explain observed behavioral and executive dysfunctions. We propose that neuromodulation based on low frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) will enhance lateral inhibition through activation of inhibitory double bouquet interneurons and will be accompanied by improvements in the prefrontal executive functions. In addition we proposed that rTMS will improve cortical excitation/inhibition ratio and result in changes manifested in event-related po

Mapping the Research Landscape and Global Trends: A Bibliometric Analysis of Event-related Potential in Alzheimer's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: There is an urgent need for objective biomarkers to facilitate early diagnosis and dynamic monitoring of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Event-Related Potential (ERP), as a neuroelectrophysiological technique with high temporal resolution, shows great promise in addressing this demand. However, the macro-level developmental trajectory, research status, and frontier directions within this field remain to be systematically elucidated. This study employs bibliometric methods to delineate the development trends, knowledge structures, and research frontiers of ERP applications in AD, thereb

Neural evidence for the influence of cognitive control by facial emotion under varying task difficulty in individuals with borderline personality disorder traits.

Borderline personality disorder traits (BPD traits) represent subclinical characteristics associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD), which are marked by impaired cognitive control of emotion processing. Although the cognitive control deficit of negative emotions is a core feature of BPD, the characteristics and neural basis of this deficit in non-clinical BPD traits individuals remain unclear. The present study employed a novel facial majority function task (fMFT) combined with event-related potential (ERP) recording to explore the cognitive control of negative facial emotion under

Comprehensive assessment of memory function, inhibitory control, neural activity, and cortisol levels in late pregnancy.

A considerable proportion of women subjectively perceive a detriment to their cognitive capacity during pregnancy, with decreased memory functions being the most frequently self-reported concerns. However, objective investigation of these perceived cognitive deficits has yielded inconsistent results. This study focused on memory functions during late pregnancy using multiple tasks designed to assess various memory indices, for example, working memory, learning rate, immediate recall, proactive and retroactive interference, delayed recall, retrieval efficiency, visuospatial constructional abili

Cortical changes induced by increased cognitive task difficulty during dual task balancing correlate with postural instability in elders and patients with Parkinson's disease.

Objective. The flexibility of cognitive resource allocation is deteriorated due to aging and neurological degenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Dual task performance reflects a subject's ability to allocate cognitive resources, and the investigation of cortical activation changes during dual tasking can provide a deep insight into the reallocation of neural resources. However, the cortical changes induced by increased cognitive task difficulty during dual tasking with changes in behavioral outcomes have not been explored in PD and older adults (OAs).Approach.We designed a no

Towards high-accuracy classifying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders using CNN-LSTM model.

Objective. The neurocognitive attention functions involve the cooperation of multiple brain regions, and the defects in the cooperation will lead to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is one of the most common neuropsychiatric disorders for children. The current ADHD diagnosis is mainly based on a subjective evaluation that is easily biased by the experience of the clinicians and lacks the support of objective indicators. The purpose of this study is to propose a method that can effectively identify children with ADHD.Approach. In this study, we proposed a CNN-LSTM model to

Multi-head noise regression for single-channel EEG: estimating ocular and muscle contamination to guide artifact removal.

Objective.Electroencephalography (EEG) is often contaminated by ocular electrooculographic (EOG) and muscle electromyographic (EMG) artifacts, yet many pipelines apply uniform denoising, risking distortion of clean neural activity. We propose a two-head, single-channel regressor that estimates EOG and EMG noise-to-signal ratio (NSR, dB) from short segments and test whether it can guide selective artifact reduction, including downstream brain-computer interface decoding.Approach.Using EEGdenoiseNet clean EEG and artifact exemplars, we synthesized 2 s single-channel mixtures with known EOG/EMG N

Metabolite-driven protein modifications in immune signaling: from established principles to emerging pyruvylation.

BACKGROUND: Immune signaling is tightly coupled to cellular metabolic state. Beyond supplying energy, metabolites can directly regulate immune responses by driving post-translational modifications of proteins and chromatin, shifting immunometabolism toward a model in which metabolic state encodes signaling outputs. FINDINGS: Protein pyruvylation has recently emerged as a metabolite-responsive lysine modification linking glycolytic metabolism to both immune signaling and transcriptional regulation. Established examples, including histone lactylation and acylation marks linked to acetyl-CoA and
