Lotus-Leaf-Inspired Surface-Fluorinated Indium Oxide Nanomastoid for Humidity-Resistant Hydrogen Sulfide Detection in Exhaled Breath.

Non-invasive breath testing has emerged as a promising technique for real-time disease monitoring and early intervention. In the oral cavity, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is predominantly generated through the metabolic degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids by Gram-negative anaerobic and Gram-positive bacterial communities. Precise quantification of exhaled H2S concentrations enables effective diagnosis of oral diseases, providing critical insights for clinical treatment strategies. However, the complex gas composition and high humidity of exhaled breath pose significant challenges for trace

myCOtrak: an app which records smoking, nicotine use and exhaled carbon monoxide concentrations concurrently for use in smoking research.

OBJECTIVE: Smoking during pregnancy poses significant health risks, necessitating accurate continuous monitoring of pregnant women's smoking behaviours. Existing methods relying on self-reporting lack objectivity, while biochemical measures like exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) provide validation but suffer from low participant engagement. We developed myCOtrak to address these limitations by integrating real-time CO monitoring with self-reported smoking, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and e-cigarette use. RESULTS: myCOtrak combines automated CO data from the Bedfont iCO monitor with daily s

Exploring Exhaled Breath Analysis in Adults With Chronic Visceral Acid Sphingomyelinase Deficiency to Identify Potential Biomarkers of Pulmonary Involvement.

Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) is a rare lysosomal storage disease. The most commonly affected organs are the spleen, the liver, and the lungs. Pulmonary involvement resembles interstitial lung disease and often leads to decreased diffusion capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO). An emerging technique in pulmonary research is the analysis of exhaled breath. The aim of this study was to investigate potential markers of pulmonary involvement in the exhaled breath of adult chronic visceral ASMD patients and to quantify findings on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of t

A hybrid learning approach to better classify exhaled breath's infrared spectra: A noninvasive optical diagnosis for socially significant diseases.

Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment of socially significant diseases, such as type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), pneumonia, and asthma. This study employs a diagnostic method based on infrared laser spectroscopy of human exhaled breath. The experimental setup comprises a quantum cascade laser, which emits in a pulsed mode with a peak power of up to 150 mW in the spectral range of 5.3-12.8 μm (780-1890 cm-1), and a Herriott multipass gas cell with a specific optical path length of 76 m. Using this setup, spectra of exhaled breath in the mid-infrared range were obtained from 165 vol

Studying drug excretion into exhaled breath aerosol - A workflow based on an impaction sampling device and LC-HRMS/MS analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exhaled breath (EB) aerosol was in principle shown to be a suitable matrix for bioanalysis of volatile but also non-volatile compounds. This attracted particular interest in the field of drug analysis. However, a big gap still exists in the understanding how and which drugs and/or their metabolites are excreted into exhaled breath and could thus actually be detected. The current study aimed to develop an analytical workflow for the qualitative detection of non-volatile drugs in EB aerosol microparticles. RESULTS: The analyte selection covered different drug classes such as antihyp

Ultra-sensitive analysis of exhaled biomarkers in ozone-exposed mice via PAI-TOFMS assisted with machine learning algorithms.

Ground-level ozone ranks sixth among common air pollutants. It worsens lung diseases like asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. Despite recent attention from researchers, the link between exhaled breath and ozone-induced injury remains poorly understood. This study aimed to identify novel exhaled biomarkers in ozone-exposed mice using ultra-sensitive photoinduced associative ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and machine learning. Distinct ion peaks for acetonitrile (m/z 42, 60, and 78), butyronitrile (m/z 70, 88, and 106), and hydrogen sulfide (m/z 35) were detected. Integration

Fraction of exhaled nitric oxide is higher in liver transplant recipients than in controls from the general population: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Fraction of exhaled nitric oxide with an expiratory flow of 50 mL/s (FENO50) is a biomarker of eosinophilic airway inflammation. Liver transplant recipients have an increased risk of pulmonary infections, but little is known about the burden of chronic pulmonary diseases in this group. We aimed to assess the prevalence of elevated FENO50 in liver transplant recipients and compare it to controls from the general population. METHODS: FENO50 was measured in 271 liver transplant recipients from The Danish Comorbidity in Liver Transplant Recipients (DACOLT) study and 1,018 age- and sex

Validation and application of an automated multitarget LC-MS/MS method for drugs of abuse testing using exhaled breath as specimen.

Aerosol microparticles in exhaled breath carry non-volatile compounds from the deeper parts of the lung. When captured and analyzed, these aerosol microparticles constitute a non-invasive and readily available specimen for drugs of abuse testing. The present study aimed to evaluate a simple breath collection device in a clinical setting. The device divides a breath sample into three parallel "collectors" that can be individually analyzed. Urine was used as the reference specimen, and parallel specimens were collected from 99 patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment. Methadone was us

Association of alpha globin gene copy number with exhaled nitric oxide in a cross-sectional study of healthy Black adults.

INTRODUCTION: The genetic determinants of fractional exhalation of nitric oxide (FeNO), a marker of lung inflammation, are understudied in Black individuals. Alpha globin (HBA) restricts nitric oxide signalling in arterial endothelial cells via interactions with nitric oxide synthase; however, its role in regulating the release of NO from respiratory epithelium is less well understood. We hypothesised that an HBA gene deletion, common among Black individuals, would be associated with higher FeNO. METHODS: Healthy Black adults were enrolled at four study sites in North Carolina from 2005 to 20…
