Causes of enucleation: a clinicopathological study.

BACKGROUND: Enucleation is an approach used for unresponsive end-stage ocular disease often resulting in blind, painful or cosmetically unacceptable eyes. METHODS: We reviewed the clinicopathological data on 3506 enucleations performed over a 50-year period, 1945-1995. Histopathological data were divided into eight groups according to the causes leading to enucleation: trauma, phthisis, corneal disease, inflammation, vitreoretinal disease, glaucoma, tumors and infections. RESULTS: The study considered 3506 enucleated eyes of 3482 patients, 2467 (70.8%) males and 1011 (29.1%) females (4 sex u

Besifloxacin-Loaded Nanostructured Lipid Carrier for Ocular Delivery: Formulation Optimization, In Vitro Characterization, and Safety Assessment.

Conjunctivitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis, and blepharitis are among the most prevalent bacterial eye infections. Topical eye drops are convenient but often exhibit low ocular bioavailability due to anatomical and physiological barriers, which may contribute to subtherapeutic exposure and antimicrobial resistance. Besifloxacin (BFX), a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone approved exclusively for ophthalmic use, has poor aqueous solubility at tear pH and is currently marketed as a suspension requiring frequent instillation. This study aimed to develop and optimize besifloxacin-loaded nanostructu…

Motherhood: What every ophthalmologist needs to know.

The aim of this review article is to summarize the available literature on physiologic and pathologic ocular changes during pregnancy and the effect of diseases in pregnancy. A literature search was conducted using PUBMED, MEDLINE, and Cochrane library in English. In addition, the cited references in the published articles were manually reviewed for the relevant results. Pregnancy encompasses a multitude of changes in all body systems, including the visual system of the female. The changes can be physiological, i.e., changes occurring in the lids and adnexa, cornea, conjunctiva, changes in tea

Update on pathology of ocular parasitic disease.

Parasites are a group of eukaryotic organisms that may be free-living or form a symbiotic or parasitic relationship with the hosts. Consisting of over 800,000 recognized species, parasites may be unicellular (Protozoa) or multicellular (helminths and arthropods). The association of parasites with human population started long before the emergence of civilization. Parasitic zoonotic diseases are prevalent worldwide including India. Appropriate epidemiological data are lacking on existing zoonotic parasitic diseases, and newer diseases are emerging in our scenario. Systemic diseases such as cyst

Noxious compounds in exhaled air, a potential cause for ocular manifestations of H. pylori gastrointestinal infection.

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common chronic bacterial infections worldwide. In the past few years, a variety of extradigestive disorders have been associated with H. pylori infection. This infection has also been linked to some ophthalmic disorders, including glaucoma, central serous chorioretinopathy, uveitis and blepharitis. Several possible theories to explain pathogenetic mechanism underlying the observed associations have been provided. H. pylori infection causes elaboration of some noxious compounds, including ammonia, hydrogen nitrate and hydrogen cyanide, in exhaled

External ophthalmomyiasis: a case report.

Many dipteran flies can cause ophthalmomyiasis, a potentially severe and vision threatening disease. We report a case of ophthalomyiasis caused by Oestrus ovis. Larvae of Oestrus ovis are confined to the surface of the eye and cause external ophthalmomyiasis. The presentation is similar to a viral conjunctivitis, with tearing, itching, hyperaemia and foreign body sensation. The disease is self-limiting and removal of the larvae is the most effective therapy. Identification of the species is important to estimate the risk of penetration of the globe.

Pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ocular diseases.

The gram-negative opportunistic bacterial pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is an important etiologic agent of a variety of infectious diseases affecting the eye and surrounding tissues. The number of clinical studies and studies with mouse, guinea pig, and rabbit models of Pseudomonas-induced ocular disease has increased markedly in recent years, and this research has led to our improved understanding of factors relating to the pathogenesis and management of the diseases. Factors that predispose to ocular infections with P. aeruginosa include (1) trauma to the cornea with, or implantation of,

Ocular COVID-19: Eyes as a Reservoir to Conceal and Spread SARSCoV- 2.

Ocular tissues can serve as a reservoir for the SARS-CoV-2 virus which can not only cause conjunctivitis but also serve as a source of infection transmission to others. Additionally, the eye and its tear drainage apparatus can track the SARS-CoV-2 from the eye into the respiratory tract of the patient. The potential ocular presence of the SARS-CoV-2 in the eye of a patient can target ACE2 receptors in the endothelium of the conjunctival vessels and use the lacrimal sac a potential space to evade immune detection and clinical isolation. The recently reported case of COVID-19 after the acquisiti

Coinfection of Herpes Simplex virus 2 and Mycobacterium chelonae in acute hydrops associated with keratoconus: A case report.

PURPOSE: Acute hydrops is a characteristic complication of corneal ectatic diseases. While Mycobacterium chelonae is known to cause various ophthalmic infections, most commonly following surgery, there are no reported cases of infection by this microorganism in the context of acute hydrops, nor concurrent with Herpes Simplex virus 2 infection. OBSERVATIONS: A 33-year-old Portuguese woman of Caucasian ethnicity with a history of keratoconus presented with a red eye and ocular discomfort in the right eye at the Ophthalmology Emergency Department. Initial examination revealed acute hydrops with

Chlamydia trachomatis in the conjunctiva of children living in three rural areas in Mexico.

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia trachomatis infections, in the context of extreme poverty, may trigger trachoma. Because the levels of C. trachomatis eye infections in Mexico are unknown, this study sought to determine if C. trachomatis was present in the conjunctiva of children living in three poor, rural areas of the country. METHODS: Clinical diagnosis of conjunctival follicles in children was conducted during the 2004 visual acuity assessment campaigns in rural areas of the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Zacatecas. C. trachomatis detection was carried out by sampling the children with follicles and…

Diagnostic riddle- case report of ocular syphilis.

Syphilis is one of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The incidence of Treponema pallidum infection has increased in the last 20 years. This rise is also evident in ophthalmological practice, with cases of ocular syphilis becoming more frequent. We present a case of a 29-year-old patient with blurred vision in his left eye. Patient showed no general symptoms, nor previous history of eye disorders. On ophthalmological examination, the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/20 in the right eye (OD) and 20/80 in the left eye (OS). The left eye presented high intraocular pressure (IOP) of

A Rare Case of Streptococcus dysgalactiae Panophthalmitis and Concurrent Septic Arthritis from Hematogenous Spread: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Panophthalmitis is a severe ocular infection with significant morbidity, most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. Streptococcus dysgalactiae is a rare cause of panophthalmitis, and its involvement in concurrent systemic infections is exceedingly uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of S. dysgalactiae panophthalmitis in an elderly male patient, associated with bacteremia and septic arthritis. Despite early antimicrobial therapy, the infection progressed rapidly, ultimately requiring evisceration of the affected eye. CONCLUSION: This cas
