What Are the Predictors of Craniomaxillofacial Injuries From Hoverboard Accidents?

PURPOSE: A hoverboard, or self-balancing scooter, is a battery-powered vehicle with 2 wheels connected by a longboard that requires handsfre … ulted in a greater admission rate compared with home injuries (P = .01). CONCLUSIONS: Craniomaxillofacial injuries from hoverboard accidents have resulted in emergency department visits and hospital admissions since the vehicle's introduction to the consumer market in 2015. Most cases occurred in the winter, which might reflect increased sales and novice riders …

Gunshot wounds to the face--acute management.

The complex facial trauma victim poses a genuine therapeutic challenge as a whole, and may be particularly challenging to the medical team. The literature on acute management of gunshot wounds to the face is scarce. We performed an extensive review of the English-language literature in an effort to better delineate the diagnosis and acute management of these injuries. Most of these injuries do not present with initial threat to life and can safely be managed non-operatively. Definitive treatment is often deferred in patients with multiple, or more severe, injuries. Airway compromise is the mos

New aspects of facial nerve pathology in temporal bone fractures.

Electron microscopic examination of intratemporal facial nerve segments removed from 12 patients with persisting facial paralysis following temporal bone fractures revealed that traumatic injury at the geniculum induces retrograde degeneration through the labyrinthine and distal meatal segments of the facial nerve. Fibrosis may occur in the traumatized labyrinthine segment and block regenerating motor fibers. The surgical treatment of traumatic facial nerve injuries should be aimed to avoid or eliminate fibrosis within the labyrinthine segment of the Fallopian canal.

Facial Protection to Prevent Facial Trauma and Allow for Optimal Protection after Facial Fracture Repair.

Facial skeletal fractures continue to affect humankind, and many methods to alleviate and prevent the injuries outright have been sought after. Prevention is desired, but the implementation and general compliance may contribute to missed opportunities to decrease the burden of facial skeletal trauma. In this article, we explore the preventative as well as postoperative options for the protection of the facial skeleton.

Concomitant open reduction of a nasal bone fracture combined with a zygomatic fracture through a subciliary incision.

Nasal bone fracture is the most common of the fractures of the facial skeleton. For centuries, these injuries have been managed with closed reduction, but because of low surgeon satisfaction rates and high revision rates, open reduction is advocated in cases involving severe deviation of the nasal dorsum associated with septal fractures. There are many surgical approaches that can be used to expose the nasal bones, but we present a case where the subciliary incision was used to reduce and fixate the fracture in a patient with combined zygomatic fractures. Owing to the abundance of other concom

The relationship between face or skull fractures and cervical spine and spinal cord injuries: a review of 13,834 patients.

A state trauma registry database containing 13,834 patients was evaluated to determine the relationship among 1,062 skull fractures, 1,329 facial fractures, 339 cervical spine injuries, and 299 spinal cord injuries. Categories studied were all trauma patients, motor vehicle crashes, automobile crashes (drivers, passengers, unknown), and belted and unbelted victims. Odds ratios calculated demonstrated that patients with skull and/or facial fractures did not have a higher likelihood of cervical spine or spinal cord injury as has been suggested. The lack of a relationship emphasizes the need for

Computed tomography of facial fractures.

Facial skeletal fractures are common, potentially serious, and frequently associated with other life-threatening conditions, such as traumatic brain injuries. Facial fractures can be simple or complex and sometimes involve serious complications. Computed tomography has revolutionized the rapid and precise assessment of craniofacial and neck fractures in patients with severe facial trauma. This article introduces readers to the epidemiology, skeletal anatomy and biomechanics, complications, and diagnostic imaging of facial fractures. In addition, this article describes efforts to develop and va

Radiology of maxillofacial trauma.

There has been a rising incidence of maxillofacial injuries during the past decade as a result of an increasing number of assaults and motor vehicle accidents. The maxillofacial region is one of the most complex areas of the human body, and the radiographic imaging of this region becomes even more difficult in traumatized patients because of their clinical condition and their inability to cooperate. Imaging modalities used in the evaluation of the traumatized maxillofacial region include conventional (plain) films, tomography, panoramic radiography, computed tomography, three-dimensional compu…

Pediatric snow sport injuries differ by age.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among pediatric patients. There were 13,436 injuries related to snow sports in those younger than 15 in 2015, with 4.8% requiring admission. These sports are high-risk given the potential for injury even when using protective equipment. We hypothesized that snow sport injury patterns would differ based on patient age. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of the 2009 and 2012 Kids' Inpatient Database was performed. Cases of injuries were identified and analyzed using ICD-9 codes. National estimates were obtained using case weighting

Mebendazole in cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The facial nerve is highly tortuous and has the longest course through a bony canal among all body nerves. Its course shares similarities and variations with other middle ear structures, making it susceptible to iatrogenic injuries during ear surgeries. This study aims to analyse the facial nerve's course and variations through the temporal bone, observing average morphometric values in relation to surrounding structures. Conducted at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, Belagavi, this study utilized 25 wet cadaveric temporal bones obtained from fresh cadavers at J. N. Medical College. Dissection

Risk of Permanent Dysfunction of Facial Nerves After Open Rigid Internal Fixation in the Treatment of Mandibular Condylar Process Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve palsy is a relatively common complication following open rigid internal fixation (ORIF) of a mandibular condylar fracture. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors that influence post-operative facial nerve function and the recovery process. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted based on the medical records of 329 patients who underwent ORIF treatment for condyle fractures, with the follow-up period being 24 months long. RESULTS: During the initial post-operative examination, 50.45% of patients exhibited some signs of facial nerve dysfunction,
