Resistin family proteins in pulmonary diseases.

The family of resistin-like molecules (RELMs) consists of four members in rodents (RELMα/FIZZ1/HIMF, RELMβ/FIZZ2, Resistin/FIZZ3, and RELMγ/FIZZ4) and two members in humans (Resistin and RELMβ), all of which exhibit inflammation-regulating, chemokine, and growth factor properties. The importance of these cytokines in many aspects of physiology and pathophysiology, especially in cardiothoracic diseases, is rapidly evolving in the literature. In this review article, we attempt to summarize the contribution of RELM signaling to the initiation and progression of lung diseases, such as pulmonary hy…

Patient- and Family-Centered Electroconvulsive Therapy.

This article builds upon prior efforts to improve the quality of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) practice and care by encouraging the participation of family members in the ECT process. This participation included the presence of a family member or significant other (SO) in the treatment room during the ECT procedure. Suggestions for limiting that presence to the induction process and for providing limited physical contact with the patient are proposed. The participation of the SO during the pretreatment assessment process is encouraged. Because of possible impairment of memory and judgment, a…

Family Accommodation in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Family accommodation occurs frequently among families of children with OCD and anxiety disorders, with higher levels of accommodation repeatedly associated with greater symptom severity, lower functioning, and poorer treatment outcomes for children. This is the first examination of family accommodation of restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parents of children with ASD (N = 86) completed questionnaires assessing their children's RRBs and parental accommodation of these symptoms. Most participants (80%) reported engaging in accommodation a…

Family therapy approaches for anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterised by a failure to maintain a normal body weight due to a paucity of nutrition, an intense fear of gaining weight or behaviour that prevents the individual from gaining weight, or both. The long-term prognosis is often poor, with severe developmental, medical and psychosocial complications, high rates of relapse and mortality. 'Family therapy approaches' indicate a range of approaches, derived from different theories, that involve the family in treatment. We have included therapies developed on the basis of dominant family systems theories, appro…

Family Planning for Sexual Minority Women.

The family planning needs of sexual minority women (SMW) are an understudied but growing area of research. SMW have family planning needs, both similar to and distinct from their exclusively heterosexual peers. Specifically, SMW experience unintended pregnancies at higher rates than their exclusively heterosexual peers, but factors that increase this risk are not well understood. Contraception use is not uncommon among SMW, but lesbian women are less likely to use contraception than bisexual or exclusively heterosexual women. High rates of unintended pregnancy suggest contraception is underuse…

[Isolated microspherophakia in a Senegalese family].

PURPOSE: To report the clinical investigation of isolated microspherophakia involving a Senegalese family in order to appreciate its functional impact. OBSERVATIONS: This is a rural family comprised of 7 members. The sibship included three girls and two boys. One of the girls, who lived in a distant zone, was unable to be examined. Of all the examined members of the family, only the father was unaffected by the illness. There was no consanguinity. The general medical examination was normal. The best-corrected visual acuity (VA) for the girls was 2/10. For one of the boys, BCVA was 8/10 for bo…

[Update in family medicine: Periodontal disease].

About 85-94% of the Spanish adults older than 35 experience gum problems, and about 15-30% suffer from periodontitis, being severe in up to 5-11% of them. Unlike other inflammatory conditions, periodontal disease rarely causes discomfort, or limits life or causes functional limitations until its advanced stages, when clinical signs and symptoms arise (gingival recession, pathological teeth migration, or mobility). Lack of knowledge about the disease, together with the idea that tooth loss is linked to ageing, frequently results in a late diagnosis, requiring extensive treatments with a worse p

Poverty, Homelessness, and Family Break-Up.

This study examines the extent and correlates of family separations in families experiencing homelessness. Of 2,307 parents recruited in family shelters across 12 sites, a tenth were separated from partners and a quarter from one or more children. Additional separations before and after shelter entry and reasons, from parents' perspectives, were documented in qualitative interviews with a subsample of 80 parents. Separations were associated with economic hardship, shelter conditions, and family characteristics.

Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense infections in a family.

Diphyllobothrium latum and Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense are morphologically similar to each other, and only genetic method can differentiate clearly between the 2 species. A strobila of diphyllobothriid tapeworm discharged from a 7-year-old boy was analyzed to identify the species by mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene sequencing. He and his family (total 4 persons) ate slices of 3 kinds of raw fish 16 days before visiting our outpatient clinic. All family members complained of abdominal pain and watery diarrhea. They all expelled tapeworm strobilae in their stools. They …

Determination of chitinases family during osteoclastogenesis.

Mammalian chitinases consisting of CHIA, CHIT1, CHI3L1, CHI3L2 and CHID1 exert important biological roles in the monocyte lineage and chronic inflammatory diseases. Pathological bone resorption is a cause of significant morbidity in diseases affecting the skeleton such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, periodontitis and cancer metastasis. The biologic role of chitinases in bone resorption is poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the expression of the chitinases family during osteoclast differentiation. The expression of CHIA, CHI3L2 and CHID1 resulted unchanged during osteoclast …

Tangier disease in a Turkish family.

In this report we describe the upper gastrointestinal tractus involvement in a rare genetic disease of lipid metabolism. A 12-year-old boy presented with sore throat and fever. On physical examination, orange-yellow tonsils and adenoid tissue were noted. Mild hepatosplenomegaly was present. Lipid profile was compatible with Tangier disease (TD). Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract showed white-yellowish fatty deposits on the gastric mucosa. Microscopically, biopsy specimens contained numerous histiocytes with a foamy cytoplasm packed in the lamina propria of the gastric mucosa and at

Sick sinus syndrome: a family study.

A case of related individuals affected by sick sinus syndrome is presented in this study. The clinical and electrocardiographic signs of sinus node dysfunction and the most common causes of this disease are presented. Subsequently, the article includes descriptions of sinus node disease in three related children as well as details of the disease in their relatives. A literature review of the genetics of familial sinus node dysfunction concludes the study.

A family of Bart-Pumphrey syndrome.

Bart-Pumphrey syndrome (BPS) is an autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by hearing loss, leukonychia, knuckle pads and palmoplantar keratoderma. Two mutations in the extracellular domain of GBJ2 are resposible for this syndrome. To date, less than 10 case reports or clinical series about BPS have been published in the literature. Hearing loss and knuckle pads are the more commonly seen findings of this syndrome. Three generations and six family members with variable findings of knuckle pads, leukonychia, hearing loss and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis were presented in this report. We want t…
