Phenotypic heterogeneity in patients with familial partial lipodystrophy (dunnigan variety) related to the site of missense mutations in lamin a/c gene.

The lamin A/C (LMNA) gene has recently been reported to be mutated in familial partial lipodystrophy, Dunnigan variety (FPLD). We found mutations within exon 8 of LMNA (R482Q, R482W, and G465D) in 12 families with typical FPLD and in exon 11 (R582H) in 1 atypical family. To investigate phenotypic heterogeneity, we compared body fat distribution, using anthropometry and whole body magnetic resonance imaging, and metabolic parameters in women with atypical and typical FPLD. Compared with women with typical FPLD, the two sisters with atypical FPLD had less severe loss of sc fat from all the extre

Factors related to family therapists' breaking confidence when clients disclose high-risks-to-HIV/AIDS sexual behaviors.

This national survey of 309 marriage and family therapists examined what therapists do when their HIV-positive clients disclose that they are engaging in high-risk sexual behavior. The participants were given vignettes in which a fictitious client told the therapist about engaging in unprotected sex. Although the basic situations were the same, the client variables of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, and HIV status were systematically varied. The participants were more likely to break confidence regarding unsafe sex practices when their clients were male, young, gay, or African American.

OCAM: A new member of the neural cell adhesion molecule family related to zone-to-zone projection of olfactory and vomeronasal axons.

Zone-to-zone projection of olfactory and vomeronasal sensory axons underlies the topographic and functional mapping of chemoreceptor expression zones of the sensory epithelia onto zonally arranged glomeruli in the main and accessory olfactory bulbs. Here we identified OCAM (R4B12 antigen), an axonal surface glycoprotein expressed by subsets of both olfactory and vomeronasal axons in a zone-specific manner. OCAM is a novel homophilic adhesion molecule belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily with striking structural homology to neural cell adhesion molecule. In both the main and accessory ol

Bifonazole, but not the structurally-related clotrimazole, induces both peroxisome proliferation and members of the cytochrome P4504A sub-family in rat liver.

Male Wistar rats were treated with a low (150 mumol/kg) and a high (750 mumol/kg) dose of either clotrimazole of bifonazole. Bifonazole, but not clotrimazole, exhibited the characteristics of a peroxisome proliferator including hepatomegaly (increase in liver:body weight ratio), up to a 4-fold induction of lauric acid omega-hydroxylase activity and an 8-fold induction of palmitoyl-CoA oxidation by rat liver peroxisomes. This induction of enzyme activities was paralleled by increased protein levels as determined by immunochemical analysis for both liver microsomal cytochrome P4504A1 and the per

Brief report: adjustment to juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: a family systems perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relations of the family environment to adjustment to juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), and to examine how those relations are influenced by child sex and age. METHOD: Ninety-four children with JRA completed a questionnaire on family environment and adjustment. RESULTS: Family cohesion was related to good adjustment, whereas family conflict was related to poor adjustment. Some relations of family cohesion to adjustment were stronger for younger than for older children. The relations of child autonomy to adjustment depended on child sex and age. CONCLUSION: The re

Heat shock protein family D member 1 (HSPD1) modulates ribosome-related pathways and protein synthesis in lung adenocarcinoma.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most prevalent histological subtype of lung cancer. Heat shock protein family D member 1 (HSPD1 or HSP60), a multifunctional chaperone, has been implicated in promoting lung cancer progression by regulating tumor cell growth, cancer-associated fibroblast activation, and angiogenesis. Despite these roles, the molecular mechanisms underlying its oncogenic activity remain incompletely understood. In this study, we conducted a proteomic analysis and functional investigations on HSPD1-knockdown and control A549 cells. Knockdown of HSPD1 suppressed cell proliferatio

What Is Most Important to Family Caregivers When Helping Patients Make Treatment-Related Decisions: Findings from a National Survey.

Prioritizing patient values-who/what matters most-is central to palliative care and critical to treatment decision making. Yet which factors are most important to family caregivers in these decisions remains understudied. Using data from a U.S. national survey of cancer caregivers (N = 1661), we examined differences in factors considered very important by caregivers when partnering with patients in cancer treatment decision making by cancer stage and caregiver sociodemographics. Fifteen factors were rated on a 4-point Likert-scale from 'very unimportant' to 'very important.' Descriptive statis
