Preserving levamisole efficacy with targeted selective treatment: Long-term field evidence from small ruminant farms.

To demonstrate how targeted selective treatment (TST) can preserve anthelmintic (AH) effectiveness against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), this report describes the resistance status of levamisole (LEV) on three farms in Mexico and Brazil. We compiled historical results from Faecal Egg Count Reduction Tests (FECRT) on two university farms (UADY and PUCPR) and one commercial smallholder farm where LEV has been used in a TST scheme for over a decade. The results reveal a remarkable stability in the anthelmintic's efficacy over many years. On the UADY farm, where LEV has been the sole anthelmin…

Risk factors for smothering in three commercial free-range layer poultry farms, Australia 2019-2022.

In intensively managed poultry production systems the term 'smothering' refers to deaths from suffocation that occur as a consequence of piling behaviour where birds crowd together into densely packed groups. Smothering is a non-negligible source of loss in free-range layer hens, having both negative welfare and economic effects. Smothering events are rarely observed and are usually detected by the discovery of groups of dead hens. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for smothering deaths in three commercial free-range layer poultry farms in Australia. This was a prospective coh…

Streptococcus suis infection on European farms is associated with an altered tonsil microbiome and resistome.

Streptococcus suis is a Gram-positive opportunistic pathogen causing systemic disease in piglets around weaning age. The factors predisposing to disease are not known. We hypothesized that the tonsillar microbiota might influence disease risk via colonization resistance and/or co-infections. We conducted a cross-sectional case-control study within outbreak farms complemented by selective longitudinal sampling and comparison with control farms without disease occurrence. We found a small but significant difference in tonsil microbiota composition between case and control piglets (n=45+45). Vari…
