INTRODUCTION: Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is a fatal and rapid multi- bacteria infection causing extensive necrosis of the subcutaneous tissues and fascial planes with resultant skin gangrene and associated systemic manifestation. The aim of the present study is to report four cases of cervical necrotizing fascitis highlighting their source.
METHOD: The case notes of the patients were retrieved and reviewed, literature search was done using Medline, journals available and various texts.
RESULTS: Most often the cause of cervical necrotizing fascitis is of dental origin. The diagnosis depen

We describe a case of fatal lower limb necrotizing fasciitis in a 65-year-old man who was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, limb amputation and tissue debridement. The causative organism was identified by PCR as Haemophilus influenzae serotype f, which is a highly unusual cause of necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the face and neck is a very rare complication of dental infection. Otolaryngologists and dentists should be familiar with this condition because of its similarity to odontogenic deep neck space infection in the initial stages, its rapid spread, and its life-threatening potential. Trauma has been reported to be an important predisposing factor for NF of the face. In this paper, we describe the presentation and treatment of a 62-year-old man who developed NF of the face and neck following bilateral odontogenic deep neck space abscesses. The disease progressed rapidl

Hyperacute soft tissue infection is an uncommon infectious entity, which mostly affects immunocompromised individuals, mainly diabetics and poses difficult diagnostic and therapeutic management decisions. This study addresses the presentation, evaluation and management of 37 diabetic patients with acute necrotizing fasciitis treated throughout the period between August 1993 and July 2006 by the main author. Extremities, trunk and perineum were the most commonly involved sites with an incidence of 35%, 30% and 27%, respectively. All patients presented with cellulitis, which was associated with

OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the role of clinically necessary aggressive subcutaneous debridement with limited excision of necrotic skin in treating necrotizing faciitis, while demonstrating the histopathologic basis of orbital spread and blindness complicating this disorder.
DESIGN: Observational retrospective case series.
PARTICIPANTS: Seven consecutive patients cared for by the Eye Plastic and Orbital Surgery Services at the University of Michigan and University of Iowa.
METHODS: Retrospective review of ocular findings, systemic features, management, outcome, and histopathology of debrided t

Chest wall necrotizing fasciitis is a rare and often fatal infection that usually requires extensive debridements and reconstructive procedures. We describe the therapeutical course of an uncommon case of perforating thoracic wound complicated with necrotizing fasciitis, with consecutive debridements and a resultant full-thickness subscapular defect. We agree that free flaps, although seldom required, must be considered when treating more complex defects. Latissimus dorsi free-flap was enough for pleural reconstruction and wall stabilization. There are no previous references in the literature

Liposuction, the most common aesthetic procedure performed in the United States, is not without risk, but the overall complication rate in the literature varies from less than 1% to 9.3%. A 55-year-old woman who had undergone abdominal liposuction with bilateral breast augmentation was hospitalized in a state of profound septic shock. A diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis was made on the basis of findings that included abdominal skin discoloration, subcutaneous emphysema, and air in the subcutaneous plane seen on abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan. During the operative procedure for abdomi

Necrotizing fasciitis is an inflammatory, rapidly progressive soft tissue infection usually caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or by a combination of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Here we report the case of a patient who developed necrotizing fasciitis near the site of therapeutic injections. An orthopaedic surgeon in private practice had given the 74-year-old patient, who suffered from left shoulder pain, cortisone injections in his left shoulder joint. During the course of this therapy, the patient developed necrotizing fasciitis. Despite radical surgical debridement of the patient's b

Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck is an uncommon, progressive, destructive soft tissue infection of mixed aerobic and anaerobic organisms, having high mortality if left untreated (22 to 100 per cent). This study makes an attempt to analyse various factors and management methods determining the overall prognosis. A retrospective analysis of all cases of necrotizing fasciitis involving the head and neck, with exclusion of those involving the eyelid and the scalp, was undertaken. Various parameters such as demography, aetiology, complications, management and outcome were studied. Males o

Reported here is a rare case of recurrent necrotizing fasciitis due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A 46-year-old female with poorly controlled diabetes and chronic ingestion of steroid-containing medications was admitted for treatment of necrotizing fasciitis of the right thigh. Three months following hospital discharge she was readmitted with necrotizing fasciitis of the left hand. On both occasions, MRSA was isolated from tissue cultures obtained during surgical debridement. Patients who develop necrotizing fasciitis are predisposed to severe soft tissue infections du

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening soft-tissue infection primarily involving the superficial fascia. The present report describes the clinical presentation and microbiological characteristics of this condition as well as the determinants of mortality associated with this uncommon surgical emergency.
METHODS: The medical records of eighty-nine consecutive patients who had been admitted to our institution for necrotizing fasciitis from January 1997 to August 2002 were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: The paucity of cutaneous findings early in the course of the disease ma

A 62-year-old homemaker underwent an uneventful TVT (tension-free vaginal tape) procedure. Eleven days postoperatively she presented to the Emergency Department with agonizing low abdominal pain, elbow pain, fever, and drainage from her suprapubic puncture sites. Her evaluation was consistent with a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis and she was started on antibiotics and taken to surgery for exploration and debridement, where the diagnosis was confirmed. This is the first report of necrotizing fasciitis following TVT placement.

The differential diagnosis of patients with ulcerative trachelophyma repeatedly causes difficulties. Particularly in view of the possibly fatal outcome, early differentiation between two clinical pictures is very important. Necrotizing fasciitis is often misdiagnosed or the diagnosis is delayed with a mortality rate of approximately 25-40%. It is characterized by local disintegration of the subcutaneous fascia and extensive gangrene of the skin. Sometimes it is not even possible to control the disease using combined antibiotics. Early surgical exploration is mandatory to stop progression of th

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) with thoracic extension is rare. It has never been reported in laryngectomized patients. A case of fatal CNF in a laryngectomized patient equipped with a voice prosthesis is presented. Diagnosis and treatment are discussed. CNF with thoracic extension was diagnosed on clinical picture, computed tomography (CT) and biopsies were taken just above the tracheostoma. Antibiotic treatment was started and extensive debridement of the affected tissues performed. A minor extension to the left pleura was considered irresectable. Irradical debridement and the impossib

A 20-year retrospective case series was analyzed to identify the brown recluse spider bite as a cause of necrotizing fasciitis. Data from 31 consecutive patients with necrotizing fasciitis were analyzed. Of the 31 patients with necrotizing fasciitis a brown recluse spider bite was found to be the initial cause in two patients. Both patients with spider bites delayed in obtaining medical treatment, and secondary infection of the necrotic tissue occurred. One patient was diagnosed by frozen section tissue biopsy, and the second patient was diagnosed by clinical examination. All patients in this
